Scale defects generated on the strip surface in a tandem finishing mill line are collected from the strip trapped among the production mills by freezing the growing scale on the strip by the melt glass coating and shutting down the line simultaneously. The samples observed of its cross sectional figure showed the process of scale defect formation where the defects are formed at the base metal surface by thicker oxidized scale during each rolling passes. The properties of the oxidized layer growth both at rolling and inter-rolling are detected down sized rolling test simulating carefully the rolling condition of the production line. The thickness of the oxidized layer at each rolling pass are simulated numerically. The critical scale thickness to avoid the defect formation is determined through the expression of mutual relation between oxidized layer thickness and the lanks of the strip called quality for the scale defects. The scale growth of scale less than the critical thickness and also to keep the bulk temperature tuning the water flow rate and cooling time appropriately. Two units of Inerstand Cooler are designed and settled among the first three stands in the production line. Two units of scale defect is counted from the recoiled strip and the results showed distinct decrease of the defects comparing to the conventionaly rolled products.
Background: Xenologous or synthetic graft materials are commonly used as an alternative for autografts for guided bone regeneration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate effectiveness of carbonate apatite on the critical-size bone defect of rat's calvarium. Methods: Thirty-six critical-size defects were created on 18 adult male Sprague-Dawley rat calvaria under general anesthesia. Calvarial bones were grinded with 8 mm in daimeter bilaterally and then filled with (1) no grafts (control, n = 10 defects), (2) bovine bone mineral (Bio-$Oss^{(R)}$, Geistlich Pharma Ag. Swiss, n = 11 defects), and (3) hydroxyapatite ($Bongros^{(R)}$, Bio@ Inc., Seongnam, Korea, n = 15 defects). At 4 and 8 weeks after surgery, the rats were sacrificed and all samples were processed for histological and histomorphometric analysis. Results: At 4 weeks after surgery, group 3 ($42.90{\pm}9.33%$) showed a significant difference (p < 0.05) compared to the control ($30.50{\pm}6.05%$) and group 2 ($28.53{\pm}8.62%$). At 8 weeks after surgery, group 1 ($50.21{\pm}6.23%$), group 2 ($54.12{\pm}10.54%$), and group 3 ($50.92{\pm}6.05%$) showed no significant difference in the new bone formation. Conclusions: $Bongros^{(R)}$-HA was thought to be the available material for regenerating the new bone formation.
Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of the deproteinated bovine bone powder (DBBP) coated with calcium phosphate (Ca-P) on osseous regeneration in the calvarial bone defect of rat. Materials and Methods : The DBBP (Control group, n=6) and the Ca-P coated DBBP (Experimental group, n=6) were grafted in the critical sized calvarial bone defect (8 mm) of rat weighing 250 g. The animals were sacrificed at 1, 4 week. The biopsy specimens were decalcified with 5%formaldehyde and embedded in paraffin. The rats were sacrificed at 8 week received tetracycline (1 week), calcein blue (4 week), and alizarin red (7 week), and the biopsy specimens were taken. The specimens were embedded in methylmethacrylate and ground to 10 ${\mu}m$ thin sections were made. All of the specimens were stained with H & E and Masson's trichrome and examined under light microscope. The specimens at 8 week were examined under fluorescent microscope. Results : In the Control group, the grafted DBBP was surrounded with connective tissue, and osteoblasts were observed partially around the grafted particles at 1 week. At 4 week, some osteoid was observed and, new bone formation was observed at the periphery of grafted materials at 8 week, In the Experimental group, some osteoid was seen at the periphery of the grafted Ca-P coated DBBP at 1 week, and osteoblast and newly formed bone were observed around the grafted materials. At 8 week, newly formed bone was observed at the periphery of the grafted materials. Conclusion: These results suggest that Ca-P coated DBBP group was more and faster than DBBP group in new bone formation and Ca-P could contribute to enhance bone formation in the critical sized calvarial bone defect of rat.

In this study, we focused on investigation of governing parameters affected on the fatigue properties in the hyper-eutectoid steel wires used for TBR tires. Steel wires are fabricated under different drawing strain from 3.36 to 3.80. Their diameters are 0.21 mm and 0.185mm, respectively. The fatigue properties was measured by hunter rotating beam tester, specially designed thin-sized steel wires. The results showed that the fatigue properites of steel wire, marked as A-1, were greater than the others, due to the low value of residual stress. In order to elucidate the variations of fatigue properties, the microstructure, surface defect and residual stress were observed and measured by useful analysis technique, such as TEM, 3D profiler and FIB.
This study was designed to investigate the optimal period of pedicles implantation in the prefabricated periosteofascial flap with a vascular tissue transfer. The flap prefabrication was prepared with a transposition of left occipital pedicles on the calvarial fascia of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty flaps were divided into five groups of six flaps, including control group (group I) of the conventional periosteofascial flap based on the lateral border of the rat calvarium. The prefabricated flap was elevated as an $1{\times}1cm$ sized island flap based on the implanted pedicle at 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks after the pedicles transfer in groups II, III, IV, and V, respectively. After the completion of creating a critical-sized calvarial defect and implanting with hydroxyapatite granules, the flap was sutured back for covering the defect and kept isolated from surrounding tissues. Six weeks after flap repositioning, the osseous changes of the defect were examined with simple radiographic findings, radiodensitometric analysis, and histological studies. By simple radiographic findings, specimens of the control, groups IV and V showed homogeneous radioopacity within the defect. But in groups II and III, focal radiolucency was observed in the defect. In the radiodensitometric analysis, the control group and the group V showed significant increased radiodensites statistically. Histologically, the implanted hydroxyapatite was absorbed partly in the defect in groups II, III, and IV. In the defects of the control group and the group V, the implanted hydroxyapatite was kept in its volume and the deposition of the bone cells was observed sparsely. In conclusion, the prefabricated periosteofascial flap can be created with a vascular tissue transfer and the pedicles should be implanted at least for 4 weeks to bring out positive osseous changes in the calvarial defect.

Adhesive bend and shear tests of micro-sized bonded component have been performed to clarify the relationship between effects of heat-treatment on the adhesive strength and the bonded specimen shape using Weibull analysis. Multiple micro-sized SU-8 columns with four different diameters were fabricated on a Si substrate under the same fabrication condition. Heat-treatment can improve both of the adhesive bend and shear strength. The improvement rate of the adhesive shear strength is much larger than that of the adhesive bend strength, because the residual stress, which must change by heat-treatment, should effect more strongly on the shear loading. In case of bend type test, the adhesive bend strength in the smaller diameters (50 and $75\;{\mu}m$) widely vary, because the critical size of the natural defect (micro-crack) should vary more widely in the smaller diameters. In contrast, in case of shear type test, the adhesive shear strengths in each diameter of the columns little vary. This suggests that the size of the natural defects may not strongly influence on the adhesive shear strength. All the result suggests that both of the adhesive bend and shear strengths should be complicatedly affected by heat-treatment and the bonded columnar diameter.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of porcine cancellous bone as a scaffold in a rat calvarial defect model. Critical-sized defects were created in 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were divided into critical defect (CD, n=10), $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) graft (BT, n=10) and porcine cancellous bone graft (PCB, n=10) groups. Each defect was filled with $\beta$-TCP mixed with fibrin glue or porcine cancellous bone powder mixed with fibrin glue. In the CD group, the defect was left empty. All rats were sacrificed at 8 weeks after bone graft surgery, and bone formation was evaluated by gross observation, plain radiography, micro-computed tomography scanning and histological evaluation. Repair of bone defect was the least in the CD group, and significant new bone formation was observed in the PCB group. Grafting of porcine cancellous bone was more efficient for regenerating new bone than grafting $\beta$-TCP.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic capacity of water extract of danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge). We have established in rat critical-sized calvarial defect model using the combination with collagen scaffold and danshen hydrophilic extract. All rats were extinguished at 8 weeks after bone graft surgery, and the bone regeneration ability of bone grafting sides was evaluated by plain radiography and micro-CT. These results revealed water extract of danshen had the potential to promote osteogenesis especially continuous oral administration with local treatment compared to one-shot local treatment. This compound may provide a new alternative agent for growth factors to promote bone healing and bone regeneration. In conclusion, these results suggest that danshen hydrophilic extract have the potential to promote osteogenesis in bone defects. Further studies about fusion technology with salvianolic acid B, peptides, growth factors, and scaffolds using of the combination of tissue engineering, cell engineering and mechanical engineering are needed.
