  • Experimental investigations are carried out for the characteristics of bubble rise in the Miniature Two-Phase closed Thermosyphon(MTPCT) with a thin wire insert. The working fluids applied as experimental media are of three kinds: water, methanol, and ethanol. The effects of combination of the inclination with diametric ratio $\alpha$(=d$_{0}$/D$_{I}$) on rising velocity of a large bubble in the thermosyphon are explicitly analyzed. The realm of a movable bubble and the critical value of $\alpha$ are iteratively pursued to interpret the region Figures-of-Break, rooted in the governing physics relations, according to the application of working fluid. Experimental results are compared with those of analysis and critical ranges for $\alpha$ and D$_{I}$ were ascertained from comparisons.isons.

  • High temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes are now commercially available for practical applications to apply various purposes. However HTS tapes show different electrical and mechanical characteristics, according to the manufacturers who are trying to apply various fabrication processes and treatments. From the viewpoint of an application it is very important to investigate the properties of HTS tapes under mechanical stress because the tapes will be wound with twisting and tension in applications such as magnets and cables. Thus, we studied characteristics of HTS tapes and measure critical current under bending, considering of a mechanical conditions. A description of some typical results will be presented with discussions.

  • In this paper, the critical vibration limits of a spindle unit for a high speed ball pen tip processing machine are studied. The vibration of the spindle is measured by FFT, and the influence of the vibration amplitude due to unbalance, bearing deflect, bite, and timing belts tension is analyzed. The critical vibration limits of the spindle is determined by the X, and Z directional vibrations of the spindle. Both FET and RMS values can be used to analyze the vibration characteristics of the spindle. From experimental results the limit line can be drawn for the spindle. The RMS value for the vibration limit is 3 G.

  • This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a beam axially moving over multiple elastic supports. The spectral element matrix is derived first for the axially moving beam element and then it is used to formulate the spectral element matrix for the moving beam element with an interim elastic support. The moving speed dependance of the eigenvalues is numerically investigated by varying the applied axial tension and the stiffness of the elastic supports. Numerical results show that the fundamental eigenvalue vanishes first at the critical moving speed to generate the static instability.

  • To investigate the phase equilibria and structural properties of microemulsions, we study a simple phenomenological model on the basis of the cubic lattice cell with which the oil- and water-filled cells are connected one another, respectively. The surfactant is assumed to be insoluble in both oil and water, and to be adsorbed at the oil-water interface. The Schulman condition, according to which the lateral pressure of the surfactant layer is compensated by the oil-water interfacial tension, is found to hold to good approximation in the middle-phase microemulsion. Our results show that the oil- and water-filled domains in that microemulsion are about 50-150 $\AA$ across, and depend sensitively on the curvature parameters. The phase diagram is not symmetric in this model. It may be asymmetrized intrinsically by non-equivalency of oil and water. The two- and tree-phase equilibria including critical points and critical endpoints are found.

  • In practical applications of HTS tapes for electric devices such as coils and power cables, the jointing of HTS tapes is inevitable even though long length tapes have recently been achieved. The critical current, $I_c$, degradation behaviors with tensile and bending deformations were investigated in commercially available YBCO coated conductor tapes. When the V-I relationship was measured at the jointed section of the lap-jointed YBCO CC tapes, the resistance at the joint decreased with increasing joint length. The critical load for 95% $I_c$ retention were determined for the IBAD and RABiTS YBCO tapes and they were 175 and 355N, respectively. Fracture occurred at the unjointed part which represents strong copper lamination and solder jointing. The electro-mechanical properties of lap-jointed CC tapes depended on the properties of single tapes. The V-I behavior under bending strain was similar with the tensile case.

  • Tunnels offer myriad benefits for modern countries, and understanding their behavior under loads is critical. This paper analyzes and evaluates the damage to buried horseshoe tunnels under soil pressure and traffic loading. To achieve this, a numerical model of this type of tunnel is first created using ABAQUS software. Then, fracture mechanics theory is applied to investigate the fracture and damage of the horseshoe tunnel. The numerical analysis is based on the damage plasticity model of concrete, which describes the inelastic behavior of concrete in tension and compression. In addition, the reinforcing steel is modeled using the bilinear plasticity model. Damage contours, stress contours, and maximum displacements illustrate how and where traffic loading alters the response of the horseshoe tunnel. Based on the results, the fracture mechanism proceeded as follows: initially, damage started at the center of the tunnel bottom, followed by the formation of damage and micro-cracks at the corners of the tunnel. Eventually, the damage reached the top of the concrete arch with increasing loading. Therefore, in the design of this tunnel, these critical areas should be reinforced more to prevent cracking.

  • The clamping of torque shear bolt is based on KS B 2819. It was misunderstood that the tension force of the TS bolt was induced generally at the break of pin-tail specified. However, the clamping forces on slip critical connections do not often meet the intended tension, as it considerably varies due to torque coefficient dependent on temperature variables despite the break of the pin tail. In this study, the tension of torque shear bolts were compared with two types of high-strength hexagon bolts by temperature parameters from ${-10^{\circ}C}$ to ${50^{\circ}C}$. Torque shear bolts showed that the average clamping force increased to 20kN as the temperature increased. In case of galvanized high-strength hexagon bolts, the average clamping forces at $0^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ were recorded over standard bolt tension, 178kN, and the worst standard deviation was 50kN. In case of high-strength hexagon bolts, ave rage clamping forces increased as the temperature went up, and the worst standard deviation was 33kN lower than that of galvanized high-strength hexagon bolts. As for the turn-of-the-nut method, at nut rotation of ${90^{\circ}}$, two types of high-strength hexagon bolts did not met the intended design bolt in tension, 162kN.it is neccessary to re-evaluate the range of turn of nut, ${120^{\circ}{\pm}30^{\circ}}$.

  • This study reports the details of the finite element analysis of eleven shear critical partially prestressed concrete T-beams having steel fibers over partial or full depth. Prestressed concrete T-beams having a shear span to depth ratio of 2.65 and 1.59 and failing in the shear have been analyzed using 'ANSYS'. The 'ANSYS' model accounts for the nonlinear phenomenon, such as, bond-slip of longitudinal reinforcements, post-cracking tensile stiffness of the concrete, stress transfer across the cracked blocks of the concrete and load sustenance through the bridging of steel fibers at crack interface. The concrete is modeled using 'SOLID65'-eight-node brick element, which is capable of simulating the cracking and crushing behavior of brittle materials. The reinforcements such as deformed bars, prestressing wires and steel fibers have been modeled discretely using 'LINK8' - 3D spar element. The slip between the reinforcement (rebar, fibers) and the concrete has been modeled using a 'COMBIN39'-non-linear spring element connecting the nodes of the 'LINK8' element representing the reinforcement and nodes of the 'SOLID65' elements representing the concrete. The 'ANSYS' model correctly predicted the diagonal tension failure and shear compression failure of prestressed concrete beams observed in the experiment. The capability of the model to capture the critical crack regions, loads and deflections for various types of shear failures in prestressed concrete beam has been illustrated.

  • The forming failure of AZ31 alloy sheet during deep drawing processes was predicted by the FEM and ductile fracture criteria. Uniaxial tensile tests of round-notched specimens and FE simulations were performed to calculate the critical damage values for three ductile fracture criteria. The critical damage values for each criterion were expressed as a function of strain rate at various temperatures. In order to determine the best criterion for failure prediction, Erichsen cupping test under isothermal conditions at $250^{\circ}C$ were conducted. Based on the plastic deformation histories obtained from the FE analysis of the Erichsen cupping tests and the critical damage value curves, the initiation time and location of fracture were predicted under bi-axial tension deformation. The results indicate that the Cockcroft-Latham criterion had good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, the FE analysis combined with the criterion was applied to another deep drawing process using an irregular shaped blank and these additional results were verified with experimental tests.
