  • An efficient method was developed in this study to obtain optimal stacking sequences, thicknesses, and minimum weights of stiffened laminated composite shells under combined loading conditions and stiffener layouts using genetic algorithms (GAs) and finite element analyses. Among many parameters in designing composite laminates determining a optimal stacking sequence that may be formulated as an integer programming problem is a primary concern. Of many optimization algorithms, GAs are powerful methodology for the problem with discrete variables. In this paper the optimal stacking sequence was determined, which gives the maximum critical buckling load factor and the minimum weight as well. To solve this problem, both the finite element analysis by ABAQUS and the GA-based optimization procedure have been implemented together with an interface code. Throughout many parametric studies using this analysis tool, the influences of stiffener sizes and three different types of stiffener layouts on the stacking sequence changes were throughly investigated subjected to various combined loading conditions.

  • The passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) was a species of pigeon that was once the most common bird in North America. According to some ornithologists, the number of passenger pigeons is estimated as many as five to six billions at the time when the first Europeans arrived there. But this species became extinct in 1914. There were a multiplicity of causes in the extinction; first, the extension of telegraph lines and railroads into the Middle West of the USA beginning in 1850s, second, the loss of vast feeding, nesting, and roosting sites of the passenger pigeon due to the massive deforestation, third, the rapid population growth of the USA during nineteen century, fourth, the commercial exploitation of the species, and finally, the infirm and weak protective efforts. Some important lessons can be learned from the extinction of the passenger pigeon. First, it shows how much critical the public interest is for a successful conservational movement. Second, it illustrates the need for strong laws and practices in the protection of an endangered species from going extinct. Third, the fate of the passenger pigeon proves a very important principle in conservational biology. That is, for each species (bird or other animal) there is a minimum population to sustain the species. Ecologists generally believe that the extinction of the passenger pigeon was due to the loss of their numbers below the minimum owing to overexploitation.

  • The objective of this study is to find the optimum design of a snubber using CFD analysis. Several dimensions such as snubber height(H), snubber diameter(D), buffer width and buffer angle are considered in this study. The present study shows that the CFD can be applied to study the pressure characteristics inside the snubber. The objective of the snubber design optimization are to minimize a pressure loss and the pulsation ratio. Numerical results such as particle track, pressure distribution and turbulent kinetic energy are used to analyze the critical area and pressure behavior inside the snubber. As a result, snubber model with H/D ratio of 3.23 and buffer angle of $40^{\circ}$ has a minimum pressure loss. On the other hand, snubber model with H/D ratio 4.41 and buffer angle $10^{\circ}$ has a minimum pulsation ratio.

  • Customer networks go through constant changes. They may expand or shrink once they are formed. In dynamic environments, it is a critical corporate challenge to identify and manage influential customer groups in a cost effective way. In this context, we apply inverse optimization theory to suggest an efficient method to manage customer networks. In this paper, we assume that there exists a subset of nodes that might have a large effect on the network and that the network can be modified via some strategic actions. Rather than making efforts to find influential nodes whenever the network changes, we focus on a subset of selective nodes and perturb as little as possible the interaction between nodes in order to make the selected nodes influential in the given network. We define the following problem based on the inverse optimization. Given a graph and a prescribed node subset, the objective is to modify the structure of the given graph so that the fixed subset of nodes becomes a minimum dominating set in the modified graph and the cost for modification is minimum under a fixed norm. We call this problem the inverse dominating set problem and investigate its computational complexity.

  • In recent years, we have seen a proliferation of mobile-network-enabled smart objects, such as smart-phones and smart-watches, that form a cyber-physical integrated network to connect the cyber and physical worlds through the capabilities of sensing, communicating, and computing. Discovery of the relationship between smart objects is a critical and nontrivial task in cyber-physical integrated network applications. Aiming to find the most stable relationship in the heterogeneous and dynamic cyber-physical network, we propose a distributed and efficient relationship-discovery algorithm, called dynamically maximizing remaining unchanged time with minimum connected dominant set (DMRUT-MCDS) for constructing a backbone with the smallest scale infrastructure. In our proposed algorithm, the impact of the duration of the relationship is considered in order to balance the size and sustain time of the infrastructure. The performance of our algorithm is studied through extensive simulations and the results show that DMRUT-MCDS performs well in different distribution networks.

  • The HANARO, multi-purpose research reactor, 30 MWth open-tank-in-pool type, is under normal operation since it reached the initial critical in February 1995. The HANARO is used for fuel performance tests, radio isotope productions, reactor material performance tests, silicone semiconductor productions and etc. Specially, the HANARO is planning to produce a fission moly-99 of radio isotopes, a mother nuclide of Tc-99m, a medical isotope and is under developing a target handling tool for loading and unloading those at a flow tube (OR-5). The target should be sufficiently cooled in the flow tube without an interference with the cooling of the others and an induction of extremely vibration. This topic is described an analectic analysis for the cooling characteristics of the fission moly-99 target to find the minimum cooling water. It was confirmed through the analysis results that the minimum cooling water, about 2.717 kg/s flew through the flow tube under the worst case that the guide tube got no perforating holes for cooling water to pass through the holes and that the target was safely cooled under about seventy percent (70%) of the maximum allowable temperature of the target.

  • Dynamic Voltage Restorer(DVR) which is installed between the supply and a critical load can restore voltage disturbances in distribution system. The restoration is based on injecting the same voltages as voltage sags. The ideal restoration is compensation to make the load voltages be unchanged. But voltage restoration involves real power or energy injection and the capability of energy storage is limited. So it must be considered how injection energy can be minimized and voltages can be made close to the voltages before fault. This paper describes conventional restoration techniques, which draw minimum energy from the DVR in order to correct a given voltage sag or swell. And this paper proposes a new concept of restoration technique to inject minimum energy. The proposed method is based on the definition of voltage tolerance in load side. Hence using the proposed method a particular disturbance can be corrected with less amount of storage energy compared to those of conventional methods.

  • Elimination of soluble boron from reactor design eliminates boron-induced reactivity accidents and leads to a more negative moderator temperature coefficient. However, a large negative moderator temperature coefficient can lead to large reactivity feedback that could allow the reactor to return to power when it cools down from hot full power to cold zero power. In soluble boron-free small modular reactor (SMR) design, only control rods are available to control such rapid core transient. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether an SMR would have enough control rod worth to compensate for large reactivity feedback. The investigation begins with classification of reactivity and completes an analysis of the reactivity balance in each reactor state for the SMR model. The control rod worth requirement obtained from the reactivity balance is a minimum control rod worth to maintain the reactor critical during the whole cycle. The minimum available rod worth must be larger than the control rod worth requirement to manipulate the reactor safely in each reactor state. It is found that the SMR does have enough control rod worth available during rapid transient to maintain the SMR at subcritical below k-effectives of 0.99 for both hot zero power and cold zero power.

  • Here we present the comparative experimental study of the stability of the superconducting state in 4 mm YBCO tapes with copper lamination against local heat disturbances at 77 K. The samples are either directly cooled by immersing a bare YBCO tape into a liquid nitrogen pool or operate in nearly-adiabatic conditions when the tape is covered by a 0.6 mm layer of Kapton insulation. Main quench characteristics, i.e. minimum quench energies (MQEs) and normal zone propagation (NZP) velocities for both samples are measured and compared. Minimum NZP currents are determined by a low ohmic resistor technique eligible for obtaining V - I curves with a negative differential resistance. The region of transport currents satisfying the stationary stability criterion is found for the different cooling conditions. Finally, we use the critical temperature margin as a universal scaling parameter to compare the MQEs obtained in this work for YBCO tapes at 77 K with those taken from literature for low-temperature superconductors in vacuum at 4.2 K, as well as for MgB2 wires cooled with a cryocooler down to 20 K.
