  • In oriental medicine, the fruit of Actinidia polygama has long been used to alleviate the symptoms of gout, arthritis, and inflammation. In this study, it was to designed to analyze the antibacterial activity of A. polygama ethanol extract (APEE) against Streptococcus mutans, one of the major strains for dental caries, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, one of the critical strains for periodontal disease. The antibacterial activity of APEE was analyzed by disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays. In addition, it was also analyzed the inhibitory effect of APEE on bacterial growth and biofilm formation against both oral pathogens. APEE exhibited its antibacterial effect through the inhibited bacterial diffusion as well as low concentration of MIC and MBC. In addition, APEE significantly inhibited not only bacterial growth but also biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner. Consequently, APEE showed potent antibacterial activity against both S. mutans and P. gingivalis, which indicates that APEE might be used as a potential antibacterial material for the improvement of oral healthcare.

  • Flame spread experiments of a fuel droplet array were performed using a microgravity environment. N-decane, 1-octadecene, and the blends (50% : 50% vol.) of these fuels were used and the experiments were conducted at pressures up to 5.0 MPa, which are over the critical pressure of these fuels. Observations of the flame spread phenomenon were conducted for OH radical emission images recorded using a high-speed video camera. The flame spread rates were calculated based on the time history of the spreading forehead of the OH emission images. The flame spread rate of the n-decane droplet-array decreased with pressure and had its minimum at a pressure around half of the critical pressure and then increased again with pressure. It had its maximum at a pressure over the critical pressure and then decreased gradually. The pressure dependence of flame spread rate of 1-octadecene were similar to those of n-decan, but the magnitude of the spread rate was much smaller than that of n-decane. The variation of the flame spread for the blended fuel was similar to that of n-decane in the pressure range from atmospheric pressure to near the critical pressure of the blended fuel. When the pressure increased further, it approached to that of 1-octadecene. Numerically estimated gas-liquid equilibrium states proved that almost all the fuel gas which evaporated from the droplet at ordinary pressure consisted of n-decane whereas near and over the critical pressure, the composition of the fuel gas was almost the same as that of the liquid phase, so that the effects of 1-octadecene on the flame spread rate was significant.

  • In the preceding Part I study, for improving the unbalance response vibration of a large PRT motor-generator rotor fundamentally by design, a series of design analyses were carried out for bearing improvement by retrofitting from original plain partial journal bearings, applied for operation at a rated speed of 1,800 rpm, to final tilting pad journal bearings. To satisfy evenly key basic lubrication performances such as the minimum lift-off speed and maximum oil-film temperature, a design solution of 5-pad tilting pad journal bearings and maximizing the direct stiffness by about two times has been achieved. In this Part II study, a detailed rotordynamic analysis of the large PRT motor-generator rotor-bearing system will be performed, applying both the original plain partial journal bearings and the retrofitted tilting pad journal bearings, to confirm the effect of rotordynamic vibration improvement after retrofitting. The results show that the rotor unbalance response vibrations with the tilting pad journal bearings are greatly reduced by as much as about one ninth of those with the plain partial journal bearings. In addition, for the tilting pad journal bearings there exist no critical speed up to the rated speed and just one instance of a concerned critical speed around the rated speed, whereas for the plain partial journal bearings there exist one instance of a critical speed up to the rated speed and two instances of concerned critical speeds around the rated speed.

  • Different types of long slender pile shall buckle with weak soil and liquefied stratum surrounded. Different from considering single side earth pressure, it was suggested that the lateral earth pressure can be divided into two categories while buckling: the earth pressure that prevent and promotes the lateral movement. Active and passive earth pressure calculation model was proposed supposing earth pressure changed linearly with displacement considering overlying load, shaft resistance, earth pressure at both sides of the pile. Critical buckling load calculation method was proposed based on the principle of minimum potential energy quoting the earth pressure calculation model. The calculation result was contrasted with the field test result of small diameter TC pile (Plastic Tube Cast-in-place pile). The fix form could be fixed-hinged in the actual calculation assuring the accuracy and certain safety factor. The contributions of pile fix form depend on the pile length for the same geological conditions. There exists critical friction value in specific geological conditions that the side friction has larger impact on the critical buckling load while it is less than the value and has less impact with larger value. The buckling load was not simply changed linearly with friction. The buckling load decreases with increased limit active displacement and the load tend to be constant with larger active displacement value; the critical buckling load will be the same for different fix form for the small values.

  • This paper discussed micro - structure of skin concrete to understand transport properties from surface and seek thickness from surface which is seriously influenced on durability. Concrete at nearer surface has high porosity relative to inner concrete. The porosity of concrete and ISAT value at region from surface to 20 mm depth is decreased with depth. On the other hand, according to the result of ASTM C 1202 with specimen thickness, critical depth which affects fast ionic penetration through interfacial transition zone (ITZ) equals 35mm and the critical depth would be directly influenced by the effects of ITZ on chloride diffusion unrelated with W/C ratio.

  • In this study, a thermoelastic stress index of (100) oriented single crystalline silicon wafer and a relationship between thermal stress and critical plastic deformation temperatures were simulated. The simulated results for the thermoelastic stress index indicated a maximum value on <110> direction and a minimum on <100>. Then, it could be predicted that silicon wafer is plastically deformable over 1000 K, based on the relationship between the thermal stress derived from the thermoelastic stress index and the critical plastic deformation temperature.

  • Hit judgement is essential factor in design for battle-style MMORPG game system and sets foundation for other game systems. Hit judgement model consists of attack power and attack rate. The former contains minimum, maximum, and critical attack, the latter has miss, hit, and critical blow rate. Random function generates one value of attack rate and consequently the damage is calculated. In this article, we propose hit judgement model which Is widely acceptable for generic MMORPG and describe the effort of applying the proposed model to Travia Online in detail.

  • In a cost based pool market, the generation capacity can be used as strategic bids by generation companies (Gencos) with the cost functions open to the market. Competition using strategic capacities is modeled by Cournot and Perfect Competiton (PC) model, and transformed into two by two payoff matrix game with Gencos' decision variables of Cournot and PC model. The payoff matrices vary when capacity payments are given to Gencos in accordance with their capacity bids. Nash Equilibrium (NE) in the matrices also moves with capacity price changes. In order to maximize social welfare of the market, NE should locate in a certain position of the payoff matrices, which corresponds to a PC NE. A concept of a critical capacity price is proposed and calculated in this paper that is defined as a minimum capacity price leading to PC NE. The critical capacity price is verified to work as a tool for suppressing a strategic capacity withholding in simulations of a test system.

  • This study is to present explicit analytical expressions for calculating bearing capacity factor $N_{\gamma}$, to provide results of the numerical computation instead of the graphical method. In this study, $N_{\gamma}$ is proposed in the critical failure surface on assumption that the center of log spiral in the radial shear zone can be located at the any points of around footing. The critical failure surface is one which yields minimum passive pressure $P_{\gamma}$ on the radial shear zone from the family of log spirals accoding to change of the center of log spiral. This study adoptes Terzaghi's bearing capacity principle(e.g., Prandtl's mechanism, limit equilibrium equation, superposition principle) but the soil wedge in an elastic zone makes angle $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$ with the horizontal and the location of the log spiral's center.

  • An image enhancement method using modified anisotropic diffusion filter is proposed in this paper. It employs sensor noise estimation and scale space methods based on the minimum reliable scale. Then the anisotropic diffusion filter is modified by the calculated critical value function and local gradient. Through simulation, it is verified that the proposed algorithm has the capability of little or no noise amplification in homogenous region as well as superior edge enhancement.
