  • The film music in the 1940s is characteristic of its functional role of afterward crime movie and for expressed theme of scene to causing tension by encompassing the situational description of the scenes as well as psychological struggles of characters within the realm of musical techniques. This study demonstrates the process of change of theme music that expresses time-dependent plot development in Double Indemnity in which Miklos Rozsa participated as a music director and the result verifies the hypothesis that stimulate the senses and induces increased for the absorbed in the scene musical elements can be adopted as a symbolic means to emotions in movies.

Analysis of the Meaning of Acupuncture in the Korean Movie "Mother" Through Interviews with Movie Professionals (영화 "마더"를 통해 본 침의 의미 분석 -영화인들을 대상으로 하여-)

  • Objectives : Korean director Bong Joon-ho's movie 'Mother' is a story about a woman who struggles to save her son from an indictment of murder. This movie premiered at the 2009 Cannes film festival. The present study aimed to investigate the various roles of acupuncture in the plot from the perspective of movie professionals, including critics, writers and producers. Methods : We investigated the meaning of acupuncture as a subject matter in this movie. Participants who work in the film industry or are studying film were included. Survey questions were organized in a two part open-ended questionnaire and in multiple-choice form. The questionnaires were distributed via e-mail or the subjects were contacted directly. Results: In this movie, acupuncture serves at least three roles. The first role it serves is as a symbol of the mother role in her son's life and in her community. Acupuncture also works as a conduit for communication and a means of earning a living for the mother. She strives to clear her son's name by discovering the real murderer through performing acupuncture. Finally, the acupuncture box is crucial in the son's understanding of the mother's role in the crime. Seventy-nine percent of those surveyed responded that acupuncture was an important motif in this movie. Conclusions : These findings, in addition to those of previous studies, suggest that acupuncture can serve as a useful context for mass communication in media. The understanding of the meaning of acupuncture in the movie provides useful information on the perception of acupuncture modality today.

  • In the 1970s and 1980s, space installations in films became a new approach to film research. Many film directors and theoretical scholars believe that the space setting in films, other than textual stories, is an important core of film narrative research. Early film scholars have proposed that the film space with sensory narrative mode as the core motive force can promote people's in-depth understanding of the film content. Therefore, many researchers have tried to emphasize the importance of space in films through Hitchcock's films, but have not analyzed the elements and techniques of film space performance in detail. Reviewing the Hitchcock's classic crime film, through the space set in the traditional film, we can discover the movie techniques and concepts related to space. Therefore, this study takes Hitchcock's classic crime film as an example, and through analysis of film space expression techniques, attempts to propose factors for film space creation and bring new spatial perception effects to the audience.

A Study on the Movie Costume of the 「Bonnie and Clyde」 (영화 「우리에게 내일은 없다」의 의상분석)

  • This study attempted to summarize the characteristics of fashion in the 1930s which were the background of 'Bonnie and Clyde' and analyze how fashion in the 1930s was expressed through costume in the movie, focusing on some critical scenes. For this, previous studies and domestic & foreign books, magazines and DVDs relating to movie costume were examined. For analysis of movie costume, 'Bonnie and Clyde (1967)' DVD was referred to. In the movie, meaningful scenes were captured using a GOM Player. Then, the study results found the followings: First, in terms of women's fashion in the 1930s, adult look and slim & long silhouette which naturally revealed breast, waist and hip with a long skirt, a military look with strong shoulders and tailored costume were found. In terms of men's fashion, in contrast, the Duke of Windsor Style (a slim silhouette jacket and loose pants) was popular. Second, in the movie, Bonnie's costume started with a slim linen H-line dress at her first meeting with Clyde. While committing crimes and becoming a famous gangster, she displayed the fashion styles which were in vogue in the 1930s such as fancy and luxurious slim dress, tailored suit and trench coat. Third, in terms of Clyde's costume, from his first meeting with Bonnie to his first crime, he put on common costume (ex: pants, vest, shirts, etc.) which revealed his open and unconventional character. After he became a famous gangster, he would wear the Duke of Windsor style (jacket, vest and pants). The study results well describe movie costume's role as visual language which expresses characters' inner circumstances and outer situations that reflect socio-cultural background.

Analysis of Coen Brothers's Directing Style: Centering around Crime Movies (코엔 형제의 연출 스타일 분석 :범죄 영화를 중심으로)

  • Through this thesis, I analyzed Coen brothers's directing style centering around Crime movies: Blood simple, Barton Fink, Fargo, The man who wasn't thers, No country for old man. About directing style of Coen brothers, plot is an epic depiction, habitual use of narration, refusal of happy ending. They concern subject matters about human original nature and tragedy by greed. And as motifs, they often use misunderstanding, crossing over, chase. Also they likes characters of ordinary people who is destroyed by greed. How about their technical style? They usually use steady-cam and wide lens in camera, and in his early crime movies he used expressionistic lights, but after that they usually used realistic natural lights. About sound, they likes more sound effects than music. Also they directed realistic acting and emphasized actor's personality. Coen brothers has been directed many crime movies and comedy films. But their unique directing style was particularly outstanding in the crime movies

Content Analysis of Smoking Scenes in Korean Box-Office Hits in 2000-2013 (영화 속 흡연 장면에 대한 탐색적 연구: 2000-2013년에 국내에서 개봉된 흥행영화에 대한 내용분석)

  • Objectives: While cinema is regarded in the contemporary popular leisure activities, the presentation smoking scenes in films has not been fully studied. We investigated Korean box-office hit movies by using content analysis. Methods: We sampled fifty-one hit films played in Korean cinemas during the period 2000-2013. Here, a hit film is defined as a movie viewed by at least 5,000,000 audiences. Results: We found that 78.1% of the Korean hit films contained smoking scenes, whereas only 15.6% of the American hit films were so. Films with the more frequent number of smoking scenes could be lined up in the order of crime, thriller, and action genres (p<.05). Smoking actors were leading roles, hence attractive characters appealing to the audience. Moreover, the smoking rate of female characters in the films was determined to be 3.66 times greater than the actual smoking rate of females in reality. Conclusions: Smoking scenes are likely to affect the audiences' cognitive priming and/or social learning with respect to smoking. Therefore, it would be necessary to set a restriction standard to the frequency of smoking scenes to appear Korean films, and to consider it as an important factor in the assigning a screening grade to such films.

  • ‘Defined legally as a violation of law' (Sutherland, E. H. Principles of Criminology, Lippincott, Chicago, 1939) Crime within the group is essentially and primarily antisocial in that the criminal who is welfare of his group acts instead against it and breaks the principles of social solidarity not merely by not doing what these principles prescribe, but by doing something exactly opposites. Any program set up to attack crime and delinquent behavior at their sources. A program of his nature needs the constant and comprehensive collaboration of psychiatrists, social works, educations, lawmakers, and public officials, since crime is a social problem and it should be treated as such. Some crime preventives which should be mentioned are as follows, (1) The insurance that every child will be decently born and that his home life be socially and economically adequate; without socially mature parents the chid is handicapped at the start; thus parental education, integrated with the public school system, should be developed now. (2) A more meaningful educational program which would emphasize ideals of citizenship, moral integrity, and respect for the law and the police. (3) A periodic check made for potential delinquents throughout the public schools and treatment provided if possible; and if not, proper segregation in institutions. (4) Careful attention paid to press, movies, and radio so that crime may no longer appear to be glamorous. This can be done by women's clubs, civic bodies, and other educational groups exerting pressure on the movie syndicates and broadcasting companies to free their productions of the tawdry and lurid characteristics of crime and criminals. Aggression associated with the phallic stage of development, The child ordinarily comprehends sexual intercourse as an aggressive and sadistic act on the part of the male, and specifically on the part of the penis.   • The Korean movies, and are suitable for "B-movie" for spending low budget and utilizing subculture factors such as kitsch, parody. Using surrealistic space and arbitrary language is the most prior element in constituting 'B-affection'. In that sense, Behind the Dark Night, Super Margin have characteristics overcrossing the media from comics to film. Despite absurd story, Behind the Dark Night has a realistic and concrete sense of what is the making films. The hero in Super Margin was swindled, so he strikes a blow the breeding-place of crime himself. In conclusion, showing comics characteristic aspects has been increasing comedy effects. But, on the other hand, Behind the Dark Night, Super Margin have pointed out that there are many kind of social problems such like career, fraud etc. In addition, they introspect the meaning what is that to making films.

The Dynamics of Film Genre Box Office Success: Macro-Economic Conditions, Fashion Momentum, and Inter-Genre Competition (영화 장르 흥행의 동학: 거시경제, 유행의 동력, 장르 간 경쟁의 효과)

  • This study examines how macro-economic conditions, fashion momentum, and inter-genre competition affect movie genre's popularity, thus shaping fashion trends in the feature film market in Korea. Using panel data analysis of genre-specific audience sizes with 6 genre cateories and 132 monthly time points, we found that favorable economic conditions generate the fashion trend in the action/crime genre, while the deterioration of the economic conditions leads to the decline of action/crime genre. The finding implies that economic situations influence cultural consumers' psychological states, which in turn shape the fashion trend in certain direction. Furthermore, we found that the action/crime genre has a greater fashion momentum and its competitive power is stronger than other genres, suggesting that this genre has longer fashion cycle even if other genres rise to the top in their popularity. We argue that such enlengthened fahion cycle and competitive stength of the action/crime genre are associated with its breadth of niche width and audience loyalty. Scholarly and practical implications are discussed.
