Developing the Format and Samples of Teaching Materials for Scientific Creativity in the Ordinary Science Curriculum -Including Teachers' Practice and Reflection-

  • Scientific creativity is necessary for all ordinary students in ordinary school settings. In this study, a practical format for teaching scientific creativity is suggested, and sample teaching materials based on this format are developed. To facilitate the practical use of the teaching materials in ordinary schools, the model of IS3CA(Iterative Small Scale Scientific Creative Activity) was proposed. Using this format and the proposed teaching materials, a brief in-service program was developed and implemented. Here, the aim is to improve teachers' actual professional ability to develop their own teaching materials rather than just using the pre-developed teaching materials provided by the researcher. Positive responses about the in-service program were collected from the teachers, and the results also showed that the development of teaching materials by teachers was possible. Therefore, I expect that the teaching of scientific creativity by ordinary teachers is possible for ordinary students in ordinary school contexts. Finally, based on the results and experiences of this study, a curriculum for teaching scientific creativity is suggested.

Development and Effectiveness Analysis of TRIZ Program for the Creativity of Elementary Students (초등학생의 창의성 신장을 위한 TRIZ 프로그램 개발 및 적용 효과 분석)

  • In this research, the TRIZ program was developed for the growth of creativity of elementary school students. As for the TRIZ program that was developed in this research, it reconfigured the 40 of principles of the TRIZ within current curriculum, so that it would be possible for all elementary school students to receive their education in school for the growth of creativity. In order to adopt the 4-stages-class model that was developed, I made sample kit for utilizing TRIZ, and developed lesson plans along with materials 13-worksheet for lower-grade students, as well as lesson plans along with materials 12-worksheet, for higher-grade students. This program was applied to 2nd grade students of Y elementary school and 6th grade students of J elementary school, and according to the DESK theory, I subdivided the creativity into fluency, flexibility, originality, and exquisiteness, and it was shown that all of fluency, flexibility, originality, and exquisiteness were developed in elementary students who participated in TRIZ program compared with non-participated students. In conclusion, it was possible to understand that TRIZ program was effective for the growth of creativity of elementary school students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of creativity educational program for students. For this study 79 elementary students(the fourth: experimental group) who had been trained creative educational program were compared with 74 elementary students(the fourth: control group) who had not been trained creative educational program. The results of the study were as follows: the creative thinking ability and creative personality are higher in the experimental group compare with the control group in the long-term effect. This study is valuable in that it showed not only the importance creative educational program but also suggestion of effective creativity education program improving continued promoting effects for children.

  • The creative thinking and emotional trainings are very important educational issues in the knowledge-information-based future society. Recently STEAM education is suggested as one of the educational solutions to prepare the future society. The aims of this study are to develop STEAM teaching-learning program and analyze its effects on the creativity and emotional intelligence of science-gifted and general students in elementary school. Four different subject matters based on the 2007-revised curriculum were selected to construct the brain-based STEAM teaching-learning program consisting of 12 class hours. The program was applied to 50 elementary general students and 19 science-gifted elementary students. The findings of this research are as follows. The brain-based STEAM programs is effective to improve the creativity and emotional intelligence of science-gifted and general elementary students after class. The creativity of two groups was not statistically different before the class. However after class, the creativity of gifted-science students is significantly higher than that of general students. The emotional intelligence of gifted-science students was higher than that of general students before the class. Therefore in oder to analyze the different effects of the program on two groups in emotional intelligence, the test results of both group of students were analyzed by ANCOVA after class. This analysis also showed that the program is more effective in gifted-science students to improve the emotional intelligence compared to general students.

The Effects of Science Experiment Program for Low-income Family Children on Science Attitude, Self-Esteem, Self-Competence, and Creativity (과학 실험 프로그램이 저소득층 아동의 과학 태도, 자아존중감, 자기유능감과 창의성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study examined the beneficial effects of the science experiment program for Low-Income Family Children (LIFC) on their science attitude, self-esteem, self-competence, and creativity. The study involved 432 elementary school children of Low-Income Family who were divided two groups as an experimental group with 228 and a control group with 204. The experimental group was given by the science experimental program, whereas the control group was given by ordinary education programs for LIFC, such as supplementary education or after school care. The data about science attitude, creativity, self-esteem, and self-competence of two group children's were collected and analyzed by four kinds of tests on each domain before and after implementing the science experiment program. During the period of the science experiment program, the children who were given the program were observed and reported by the program lecturers and the teachers, who worked at the after school care. The results are as follows; First, there was statistically significant increase on the average points of the experimental group on the three domains except self-esteem from the intra-group analysis. Second, there was also statistically significance between the scores of two groups on the creativity, self-esteem, self-competence from the inter-group analysis. Third, it was reported that the children who were experienced the program were changed positive on their personality and school learning.

  • This study attempted to develop and apply a physical computing SW education program applying design thinking. The produced SW education program was applied to 22 students in the 5th and 6th grades of J and B elementary schools located in Jeju-si. Computational thinking ability and creativity pre-test was conducted, and Physical computing software training applied design thinking was conducted over a total of 5 sessions for 20 hours, followed by a post-test on creativity and computational thinking ability. As a result of the verification, it was found that physical computing SW education program applying design thinking was effective in improving the creativity and computing thinking ability of elementary school students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a Action Learning(AL) program in terms of problem solving, communication skills, emotional creativity and innovation behaviors. Design for this was a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study. The participants were C-hospital staff nurses in G city (Experimental group=29, Control group=30). The AL program was composed of fourteen sessions in eight weeks. Data were collected and the program was conducted from May. 26 to July. 18, 2008. Data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and ANCOVA, and utilized the SPSS win 20.0 program. There were significant increases in problem solving skills, communication skills and emotional creativity in the experimental group compared to the control group. Considering the above results, AL program has proven to be an effective educational program for improving the problem solving, communication skills and emotional creativity of nurses.

Development of the Scientific Creativity Task for a Field Trip to Botanical Garden - Application to Science-Gifted Elementary Students - (식물원 야외체험학습에서 활용 가능한 과학 창의성 과제 개발 - 초등과학영재학생에의 적용 -)

  • This study aims to develop a scientific creativity task which science-gifted elementary students can conduct on a field trip to a botanical garden, and to analyze the results from conducting the task. For this, 38 science-gifted fifth-graders from the Science-Gifted Education Center, located at the Office of Education, participated in a field trip to a botanical garden, as a part of their program. Prior to the program, researchers developed a scientific creativity task for outdoor education program, along with science education specialists and teachers. The tasks were to observe plants, and to create something new and useful, or, in other words, scientifically creative, based on the plants' characteristics. The students could submit at most three ideas. Also, they assessed their own ideas, and selected an idea that they thought was the most creative. The results were analyzed by using the scientific creativity formula. The main findings from this study are as follows. First, it was found that the scientific creativity formula had an upward bias in assessing originality. Second, the students tended to assess the usefulness of their own ideas more generously. Third, the correlation between self-assessment results and scores from the scientific creativity formula for originality was r=.43. Fourth, in formula-based assessments, the correlation between originality scores and usefulness scores was relatively high, at r=.56. Fifth, the correlation between a student's scientific creativity score and the number of his or her ideas was very low, at r=.23. Sixth, when the ideas chosen as the most creative by students were compared with the ideas that had the highest scores in formula-based assessments, it was shown that 8 out of 19 students (42.1%) did not choose the idea that appeared to be the most creative when graded by the formula. This study is concluded by discussing the lessons from the scientific creativity task analysis for primary science education and gifted education.

The Effects on Improving Creativity with a PBL-based Robot Education Program - Case of a Science High School - (문제중심학습(PBL)에 기초한 로봇교육 프로그램이 창의력 향상에 미치는 효과 - 과학고등학교사례 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a systematic and effective PBL-based robot education program for improving creativity, and to analyze its effect on improving creativity of students in a science high school. The programs for 22 classes, designed to be used in a science high school, were developed and implemented. 8 teams got the abilities to independently build their own robots throughout all the process. The resultant improvement in creativity was analyzed in terms of gender and academic achievements. In the TTCT test, there was a significant improvement in creativity, especially the greatest in a subcategory 'originality.' While there was no significant difference in creativity by gender, there was a little difference in creativity by academic achievement. Especially the lowest group (Ha) showed the greatest improvement in creativity. This robot education program is expected to be used as an introductory one for the college of engineering.

Development and Effectiveness of a Program for Enhancing the Creativity of Kindergarten Children through Physical Play (신체 놀이 활동을 이용한 유아의 창의성 증진 프로그램 개발과 효과)

  • Eighty-eight 5-year-old subjects were tested by the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, and randomly assigned to experimental(n=44) or control(n=44) groups. Developed in collaboration with kindergarten teachers, physical activity projects were based on themes from "life and health" and "life as expression" of the kindergarten curriculum. The resulting program consisting of 24 activities was applied to the experimental group for 24 sessions. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and repeated measures ANOVA. Effectiveness of the physical activity program for enhancing creativity was shown by a significant increase in mean creativity scores of the experimental group and in the sub-scores of fluency, originality, abstraction of title, elaboration, and resistance to an impetuous ending.
