The Effect of Problem-Based Learning on Student's Creativity in Middle School Science Class (중학교 과학수업에서 문제중심학습이 창의력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of Problem-Based Learning on Student's Creativity Ability in Middle School Science Class. The experimental group had Problem-Based Learning classes for six weeks and control group had traditional inquiry instruction for the same period. The results of this study presents that Problem-Based Learning is significantly effective for the improvement of creative skills test and creative tendencies. And PBL group student's had positive thinking for PBL. It's not easy to generalize these results because of many different variables. but the results suggests that teachers should make an effort to improve student's creativity applying Problem-Based Learning. And it's necessary to develop many kinds of problems and teacher's instruction method to enrich creativity in the process of Problem-Based Learning.

  • Creativity is the most important characteristic and ability in the 21st century. Recently leading people in Korean society are aware of the significance of the enhancement of the creativity. However, Korean students are less likely to take initiative or depart from standard ways of thinking or doing things, because Korean Confucius culture puts an emphasis on collectivism. An individual has an obligation to conform in order to avoid conflict and maintain social harmony. The rule of respecting parents and teachers leads to a lack of self-expression and entails silence. Brainstorming technique developed by American Osbron, who originated the group brainstorming in 1953, is the most popular creative thinking method for the students. Brainstorming technique has two principles : ideation can be more productive if criticism is concurrently excluded; The more ideas the better. In doing BS, each panel should consist of chairperson, an assistant chairperson, recorder, and 10 others including 2-3 females. However there are several problems in doing group BS, such as production blocking, uniformity thinking, evaluation apprehension, and social loafing. This study was undertaken to investigate the proper way of forming Brainstorming groups with Korean students according to the Sasang Constitutional Medicine originated by Korean Lee Je-ma in 1894. Human beings are classified in four group in Sasang Constitutional Medicine : Taeyang-In, Teaum-In, Soyang-In and Soum-In. Two Yang-Ins are more self-expressive : Taeyang-In has very unique ides and thoughts; Soyang-In is very humorous and like to present his/her ideas. On the other hand, two Um-Ins are passive and are not likely to speak out their ideas in group. Therefore, in this investigation firstly, the brainstorming group was formed with two Yang-Ins (Taeyang-In and Soyang-In) and two Um-Ins(Taeum-In and Soum-In) separately and secondly, Yang-Ins and Um-Ins were mixed. And the first method was compared with the second method in terms of the degree of participation of the group members and finally the better grouping method to produce more and better ideas was discussed and suggested for the educational system.

  • The objective of this study is to find a educational method that is able to increase creativity using both left and right directed thinking with complementary cooperation. The premise of experimental study is that analogical inference is a great help to make a creative design, and design tasks of commercial space, fashion shop and herb cafe are given to 25 students, voluntary participants in experimental tests. Tests make a clear distinction between a case using verbal analogy from many keywords and another case using verbal visual analogy from keywords and visual images. Consequently, when students use both verbal and visual analogy in solving design tasks their creative ability qualitatively as well as quantitatively is higher than in using verbal analogy. However, when students are classified with high and low sketching group verbal visual analogy is effective for students with high sketching ability to enhance both practicality and originality. Even students with low sketching ability can improve originality remarkably by using verbal visual analogy. In experiment there is time limit, a hour, but in actual studio class it is desirable that an educator guides the latter to make up for the weak points in practicality of their design taking time. Further study will be progressed with the design tasks of residential space to compare with the findings of this study.

Use of Painting Masterpieces with Physical Expression Activities : Effect on Creativity (명화를 활용한 신체표현활동이 유아의 창의성에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study examined the effect on children's creativity of using painting masterpieces with activities of physical expression. Subjects were 32 five-year-old kindergarten children assigned to control or experimental groups. The experimental group participated in physical expression activities using painting masterpieces twice a week for six weeks. Figure paintings of such famous artists as Kim Hong Do, Kim Deek Shin, Degas and others were presented by Projection TV in connection with physical movement in the classroom. Creativity was tested by Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking(2002). Results showed that the experimental group exhibited positive change in creativity scores and the sub-areas of creativity(fluency, originality, abstractness of titles, elaboration, and resistance to premature closure).

  • Interest in AI and SW education is growing as digital literacy is emphasized in the revised elementary school curriculum for 2022. There are numerous restrictions on how pupils can enhance their digital literacy because there are only 34 class hours available for information education in elementary schools. Therefore, other subjects and information education must be blended in order to ensure class hours for AI and SW instruction. In this study, we investigated the impact of S-PUMA reading instruction on the literary imagination and computational thinking of elementary school pupils. To conduct this study, two classes of sixth graders in an elementary school were chosen and split into an experimental group and a control group. Over the course of five sessions, only the experimental group received reading instruction using the S-PUMA teaching approach. It was discovered that reading instruction with the S-PUMA teaching methodology enhanced literary imagination and computational thinking. Further study is required to identify whether the improvement in creative imagination, a component of literary imagination, is a result of the S-PUMA teaching approach or a natural result of the subject matter of the lesson.

The Effects of Novel Engineering on Improvement of Creative Problem-Solving Ability (노벨 엔지니어링이 창의적 문제해결력 향상에 미치는 효과)

  • This paper describes the effects of Novel Engineering(NE) on improvement of creative problem-solving abilities. We performed two classes for control and experience group. They are all 5th grade students. Core concept of the NE lesson is ecosystem and interaction with 8 hours long. We designed a lesson able to integrate subjects like Korean, Science and Practical Arts. Then we performed pre-and-post t-test on creative problem-solving ability. The experimental results showed that NE lesson has a high effects on 4 sub-elements like self conviction and independence, diffusion thinking, critical thinking and motivational component. The research showed that NE class is a good teaching-learning method to cultivate various competencies for our children. NE is a convergence learning model integrating various problem-solving paradigms ever researched. Thus we expect that NE is a foundation for convergence curriculum model to lead our children to their future and get settled to all schools.

Study of English Teaching Method by Convergence of Project-based Learning and Problem-based Learning for English Communication (프로젝트 기반과 문제해결 기반 융합 학습을 통한 영어 의사소통 교수법에 관한 연구)

  • This study examines the effects of student-centered project-based learning for the development of creative problem-solving skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and cooperation. A college students' creative personality test was used and pre-and post-test were performed. and TOEIC Speaking practice test by Educational Testing Service were selected to measure the English communication skills. The SPSS 18.0 was used and validated at a significance level of 5%. The result of this study shows that in the case of 'independence', the post-test average of the experimental group was statistically significant at the significant level (p<.01), which also showed statistically significant difference. There was statistically significant difference between the control group ($M=127{\pm}08.2$) and in the experimental group ($M=132{\pm}18.7$) applying project-based and problem-based convergent learning to English class were positively changed.

The Recognition Characteristics of Science Gifted Students on the Earth System based on their Thinking Style (과학 영재 학생들의 사고양식에 따른 지구시스템에 대한 인지 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze recognition characteristics of science gifted students on the earth system based on their thinking style. The subjects were 24 science gifted students at the Science Institute for Gifted Students of a university located in metropolitan city in Korea. The students' thinking styles were firstly examined on the basis of the Sternberg's theory of mental self-government. And then, the students were divided into two groups: Type I group(legislative, judicial, global, liberal) and Type II group(executive, local, conservative) based on Sternberg's theory. Data was collected from three different type of questionnaires(A, B, C types), interview, word association method, drawing analyses, concept map, hidden dimension inventory, and in-depth interviews. The findings of analysis indicated that their thinking styles were characterized by 'Legislative', 'Executive', 'Anarchic', 'Global', 'External', 'Liberal' styles. Their preference were conducting new projects and using creative problem solving processes. The results of students' recognition characteristics on earth system were as follows: First, though the two groups' quantitative value on 'System Understanding' was very similar, there were considerable distinctions in details. Second, 'Understanding the Relationship in the System' was closely connected to thinking styles. Type I group was more advantageous with multiple, dynamic, and recursive approach. Third, in the relation to 'System Generalization' both of the groups had similar simple interpretational ability of the system, but Type I group was better on generalization when 'hidden dimension inventory' factor was added. On the system prediction factor, however, students' ability was weak regardless of the type. Consequently, more specific development strategies on various objects are needed for the development and application of the system learning program. Furthermore, it is expected that this study could be practically and effectively used on various fields related to system recognition.

Creativity and Academic Achievement of the scientifically gifted university students (이공계 우수 대학생 집단의 창의성과 학업 성적)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the creative characteristics of the scientifically gifted university students and the relationship between creativity and introductory engineering courses. Torrance Test of Creative Thinking(TTCT) verbal and figural forms were administered to the two groups of students, scientifically gifted students and general students. The TTCT results and their first year grade point average(GPA) were analysed by t-test method and Pearson's correlation analysis. The major findings are, (1) general students group got higher scores in some factors such as flexibility of verbal form TTCT, but significant differences between the two groups were generally not found, and (2) the factors such as the originality of figural form TTCT showed small positive correlation with GPA, but the other factors were barely related to GPA.

Study on Expression Characteristic of Patchwork Quilt Technique Type Expressed in Modern Fashion (현대 패션에 표현된 패치워크 퀼트기법 유형의 표현특성에 관한 연구)

  • Modern society has been transformed into a digital emotional society that could gradually be seen, felt, and enjoyed by the diversification of personal consumption desires due to digital development. Accordingly, in fashion, an original fashion sense that arose out of classical and conventional thinking has become important and there is an increasing interest in patchwork quilts. The purpose of this study lies in contributing to the development and utilization of creative and emotional fashion design by expanding the mental changes that have emerged in modern society to creative areas after analyzing the classification and expression characteristics of the type cases of patchwork quilt techniques expressed in modern fashion. In addition, it is meaningful to examine how the expressive characteristics of patchwork quilts are expressed in the digital emotion era. This study paralleled literature research and empirical case studies. In the scope and method of research, the theatrical research was centered on literature data. For visual data, website photos were collected, limited to women's clothing among the collections from Fall & Winter 2014 to Spring & Summer 2017. After drawing the expression types of patchwork quilts extracted from the previous research based on the design formative factors, the fashion-related expert group analyzed the expressive characteristics of 501 photographs in which the patchwork quilt of the designer clothing collection were reflected. As a result of analysis, the expressive types appeared in the order of diversification of techniques and materials, extended dual images, new formative composition, and reconstruction of traditional patchwork. In this study, the expressive characteristics of patchwork quilts expressed in contemporary fashion are analyzed and drawn as variability, compromise, convergence, and playfulness. Through this, it is hoped that this study can be used variously in the development of fashion design by expanding the interpretation of costume culture.
