In order to obtain the optimal estimation method of fracture toughness of dual phase steel in which martensitic phase encapsulated islands of ferritic phase, the stretched zone (SZ) method and the R-curve method of the JSME S 001 was discussed. The results obtained are as follows. (1) The $J_{IC}$ values estimated by the SZ method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method. (2) The $J_{IC}$ by the R-curve method decreases with the increase of the ferrite grain size and the martensite hardness. (3) The overestimation of $J_{IC}$ by the SZ method is due to the continuous plastic blunting of ferrite after the formation of stable crack which affects the critical stretched zone width.
This study was performed to clarification of the formation of weld discontinuities in the dissimilar laser fusion zone. Welding parameters were beam power of 1300, 1430, 1560, and 1700 W and travel speed of 1, 1.3, and 1.7 m/min. Most cavities in the fusion zone were observed near the tip. Cavities in the fusion zone observed to be formed and grown from pores in the tip. More cavities were formed as the beam position moves to the tip side. Small cavities were decreased but large cavities were increased when the energy input increased. W content in the fusion zone was increased with heat input and as the beam position close to the tip. In the fusion zone, W content in the dendrite boundary was increased with heat input. Considering the propagation path and fracture morphology, cracks were solidification cracking, and were initiated and propagated along the dendrite boundaries. The formation of cracks might be related with the W rich ${\mu}$ phase which was formed in the grain boundaries and dendrite boundaries.
Fracture in the titanium carbonitride-metal composites occurs by crack propagation through the carbonitride grains or in the interfaces. Thus, intrinsic properties of the carbonitride need to be enhanced and the interfaces should be also modified to coherent structure to strengthen the composites. Especially, interfacial structure can be the main factor to determine the mechanical properties of titanium carbonitride-metal composites because the interfaces between carbonitride grains and metallic phase are weak parts due to heterogeneous nature of carbonitride and metallic phase. In this paper, methodologies for improving the interfacial structure of titanium carbonitride-metal composites are suggested. Total area of the interfaces can be reduced using solid solution type carbonitrides as raw materials instead of a mixture of various carbonitrides in the composites. Also, synthesis of titanium carbonitride-metal composite powders and the low-temperature sintering of the composite powders for short time can be the way for formation of coherent interfaces. The sintering of the composite powders for short time at low temperature can reduce the potential of formation of interfaces by dissolution and precipitation of carbonitride in the liquid metal. As a result of formation of coherent boundaries due to low-temperature and short-time sintering, interfaces between titanium carbonitride grains and metallic phase have the favorable structure for the enhanced fracture toughness. It is believed that the low-temperature sintering of solid solution type composite powders for short time can be the way to improve the low toughness of the titanium carbonitride-metal composites.

The major concern in the deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuels include sulfide-induced corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of copper canisters. Sulfur diffusion into copper canisters may induce copper embrittlement by causing Cu2S particle formation along grain boundaries; these sulfide particles can act as crack initiation sites and eventually cause embrittlement. To prevent the formation of Cu2S along grain boundaries and sulfur-induced copper embrittlement, copper alloys are designed in this study. Alloying elements that can act as chemical anchors to suppress sulfur diffusion and the formation of Cu2S along grain boundaries are investigated based on the understanding of the microscopic mechanism of sulfur diffusion and Cu2S precipitation along grain boundaries. Copper alloy ingots are experimentally manufactured to validate the alloying elements. Microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy demonstrates that Cu2S particles are not formed at grain boundaries but randomly distributed within grains in all the vacuum arc-melted Cu alloys (Cu-Si, Cu-Ag, and Cu-Zr). Further studies will be conducted to evaluate the mechanical and corrosion properties of the developed Cu alloys.

A new methodology of guided wave based nondestructive testing (NDT) is developed to detect crack damage in civil infrastructures such as steel bridges without using prior baseline data. In conventional guided wave based techniques, damage is often identified by comparing the "current" data obtained from a potentially damaged condition of a structure with the "past" baseline data collected at the pristine condition of the structure. However, it has been reported that this type of pattern comparison with the baseline data can lead to increased false alarms due to its susceptibility to varying operational and environmental conditions of the structure. To develop a more robust damage diagnosis technique, a new concept of NDT is conceived so that cracks can be detected without direct comparison with previously obtained baseline data. The proposed NDT technique utilizes the polarization characteristics of the piezoelectric wafers attached on the both sides of the thin metal structure. Crack formation creates Lamb wave mode conversion due to a sudden change in the thickness of the structure. Then, the proposed technique instantly detects the appearance of the crack by extracting this mode conversion from the measured Lamb waves even at the presence of changing operational and environmental conditions. Numerical and experimental results are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed technique to crack detection.

$CO_2$ leakage from a geological formation utilized for $CO_2$ storage could result in failure of the facility and threaten the environment, as well as human safety and health. A reactive transport model of a $CO_2-H_2O$-cement reaction was constructed to understand chemical changes in the case of $CO_2$ leakage through a cement crack in an injection well, which is the most probable leakage pathway during geological storage. The model results showed the dissolution of portlandite and CSH (calcium silicate hydrate) within the cement paste, and the precipitation of secondary CSH and calcite as the $CO_2$ plume migrated along the crack. Calcite occupied most of the crack after 3 year of reaction, which could be maintained until 30 years after crack development. The present results could be applied in the development of technology to prevent $CO_2$ leakage and to enhance the integrity of wells constructed for $CO_2$ geological storage.

Acoustic emission(AE) response during stress corrosion cracking(SCC) of Inconel 600 alloy has been monitored to study the AE detectability of crack generation and growth by comparing the crack behavior with AE parameters processed, and to evaluate the applicability as a nondestructive evaluation(AE) by measuring the minimum crack size detectable with AE. Variously heat-treated specimens were tensioned by constant extension rate test(CERT) in various extension rate to give rise to the different SCC behavior of specimens. The AE amplitude level generated from intergranular stress-corrosion cracking(IGSCC) is higher than those from ductile fracture and mechanical deformation, which means the AE amplitude can be a significant parameter for distinguishing the An source. AE can also provide the effective means to identify the transition from the small crack initiation and formation of dominant cracks to the dominant crack growth. Minimum crack size detectable with AE is supposed to be approximately 200 to $400{\mu}m$ in length and below $100{\mu}m$ in depth. The test results show that AE technique has a capability for detecting the early stage of IGSCC growth and the potential for practical application as a NDE.

The Nuclear and Fossil Steam Turbines record a considerable number of failures annually. Some of these failures reported are as result of blade failure. The failure of the L-0 blade in a Steam Turbine is one of the most reported blade failure in Nuclear and Fossil steam turbines. This paper seeks to identify the best Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) method or methods to be used in the steam turbine L-0 blades inspection process. The development of systems engineering processes presents an opportunity to apply NDE inspection to the L-0 blades. This process apply computer modelling of the L-0 using ANSYS and by simulating the stresses experienced by the L-0 blade during operation it is possible to identify the most susceptible areas for crack formation and growth. The results from these models compared to industry data for validation. The analysis of these results used to predict the most probable failure location and failure modes. Therefore NDE inspection can be applied to these areas with greater degree of accuracy. This would be beneficial in the increasing the accuracy in the detection of cracks and hence save inspection time and the overall inspection cost. Furthermore, not only the location for crack formation and NDE inspection determined but also best the NDE inspection technique/techniques to be applied appropriately on the L-0 blade are prescribed.

This study has been carried out in two-phases to develop Fiber Reinforced Self-Compacting Concrete (FRSCC) performance. In the first phase, the composition of the quaternary composite binder compromised CEM I 42.5N (58-70%), Rice Husk Ash (25-37%), quartz sand (2.5-7.5%) and limestone crushing waste (2.5-7.5%) were optimized. And in the second phase, the effect of two fiber types (steel brass-plated and basalt) was investigated on the SCC optimized with the optimum CB as disperse reinforcement at 6 different ratios of 1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0% by weight of mix for each type. In this study, the theoretical principles of the synthesis of self-compacting dispersion-reinforced concrete have been developed which consists of optimizing structure-formation processes through the use of a mineral modifier, together with ground crushed cement in a vario-planetary mill to a specific surface area of 550 m2 / kg. The amorphous silica in the modifier composition intensifies the binding of calcium hydroxide formed during the hydration of C3S, helps reduce the basicity of the cement-composite, while reducing the growth of portlandite crystals. Limestone particles contribute to the formation of calcium hydrocarbonate and, together with fine ground quartz sand; act as microfiller, clogging the pores of the cement. Furthermore, the results revealed that the effect of fiber addition improves the mechanical properties of FRSCC. It was found that the steel fiber performed better than basalt fiber on tensile strength and modulus of elasticity; however, both fibers have the same performance on the first crack strength and sample destruction of FRSCC. It also illustrates that there will be an optimum percentage of fiber addition.
Purpose: This study examined the problem of crack formation in the fire control system(FCS) of the K11 objective individual combat weapon(OCIW), using design of experiment analysis. Three hypothesis were considered. The first hypothesis is that bolted joint has an effect on impulse caused by firing the weapon and the second hypothesis is that a short time interval of shooting has an effect on impulse and lastly, the third hypothesis is that a positive correlation has between the bolted joint of the FCS and the impulse. Methods: The relationship between the bolted joint and the impulse cause by firing the weapon were examined experimentally. The first and second hypothesis was tested using correlation analysis and the t-test. Results: Using ANOVA, the first null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. ANONA confirmed the second null hypothesis. Correlation analysis dismissed the last null hypothesis. A positive correlation between the bolted joint and the impulse caused by shooting the weapon was verified. Conclusion: The bolted joint of the K11 FCS and the barrel of the K11 affect the impulse caused by firing the weapon. A positive correlation was established between the bolted joint of the FCS and the impulse on firing the K11 OICW.
