  • I-section prestressed concrete(I-PC) beam crack due to low tensile strength, may decrease rigidity and structural performance by excessive deflection. In an effort to this problem, in this research, I-section prestressed dual concrete(I-PDC) beam has been proposed, consisting of normal strength concrete in compression zone, and high performance steel fiber reinforced concrete(HPSFRC) with a bottom flange depth in tensile zone. Crack formation and its propagation are controlled by the HPSFRC in I-PDC beam. The initial cracking and service limit loads are increased along with the load carrying capacity and flexural stiffness.

  • Drying shrinkage means the reduction of volume of concrete because of the loss of water in concrete. This shirinkage can cause tensile stresses, crack formations at the exposure surfaces in concretes. The purpose of this paper is to apply differential shrinkage model which uses moisture diffusion equation and to calculate more reasonable shrinkage quantity, the stresses of concretes. The result of this papar is that the mean value of differential shrinkage is similar to the existing result but at exposures surface the shrinkage strains are more large. From this result the possiblility of crack formation can take place. Thus a resonable counterplan for tensile stresses in exposure surfaces is necessary.

  • Striation is a typical pattern observed on the fatigue fracture surface and the spacing is known to correspond to a macroscopic fatigue crack growth rate, and many models for the predict in the formation of such striation have been proposed. However, these theories and methods can't be applied under random loading spectrum. In this study, the fatigue tests were carried out on aluminum alloy under random loading spectrum. The fatigue fracture surfaces were observed in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and great quantities of SEM micrographs were synthesized and saved in computer system. The space and morphology of several large-scale striations, which are expected to from at the relatively greater load range in loading block, were observed. The crack length for each loading blocks was decided in consideration of regularity and repetition of those striations. It is shown that the applicability of fractographic methods on the fatigue fracture surface under random loading spectrum.

  • Stability of vertical escarpments has been the subject of discussion for long time. However, available literature provides scarce knowledge about the effect of the formation of undercut and surface cracks on the stability of a vertical escarpment. The present study deals with a systematic analysis of the effect of surface cracks and undercut on slope stability using finite element based lower bound limit analysis. In the present analysis, the non-dimensional stability factor (${\gamma}H/c$) is used to inspect the degrading effect of undercut and cracks developed at different offset distances from the edge of the vertical escarpment. Failure patterns are also studied in detail to understand the extent and the type of failure zone which may generate during the state of collapse.

  • In this study an implicit algorithm for modeling of propagation of macrocracks in 3D concrete structures suffering from alkali-silica reaction has been developed and implemented. The formulation of the problem prior to the onset of localized deformation is based on a chemo-elasticity approach. The localized deformation mode, involving the formation of macrocracks, is described using a simplified form of the strong discontinuity approach (SDA) that employs a volume averaging technique enhanced by a numerical procedure for tracing the propagation path in 3D space. The latter incorporates a non-local smoothening algorithm. The formulation is illustrated by a number of numerical examples that examine the crack propagation pattern in both plain and reinforced concrete under different loading scenarios.

  • Macrostructural characteristic of the transverse cracks and fatigue behavior were studied for EH 32 TMCP 50mm thick plate welded with FACW under the variation in preheat and interpass temperatures. Transverse cracks were detected in specimen welded with preheat and interpass temperature below $30^{\circ}C$, but cracks were not detected in the specimens welded with preheat and interpass temperatures at the range of $100~120^{\circ}C$.C. The location of crack formation was found to strongly depend upon the thickness of weld layers as regard to the plate thickness.

  • The dependence of the corrosion potential on the stress corrosion cracking of 304 austenitic stainless steel was inspected by using the specimen of constant displacement type under the environment of 42% $MgCl_2$ boiled solution. The relationship of the corrosion potential to the intermittent propagation behaviour in stress corrosion cracking was cleared. As the results, a possible model of stress corrosion cracking of 304 austenitic stainless steel in $MgCl_2$ boiled solution was presented on the basis of the Film Rupture Model. This model is specified by the following process. Rupturing of passive film at notch tip .rarw. Dissolution of metal ion and formation of tunnel .rarw. Initiation of microcrack .rarw. Propagation of main crack .rarw. Recreation of passive film at new crack surface.

  • Fatigue test was conducted on a S45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading system, i.e fully reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression, fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression were employed. The test results show that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue lifetime. however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue lifetime. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain with either a superimposed mean stresses or not. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction which cracks nucleated and propagated at stage I (mode II).

  • During the manufacturing and the service life of Au-Al wire bonded electronic packages, the ball bonds experience elevated temperatures and hence accelerated thermal diffusion reactions that promote the transformation of the Au-Al phases and the IMC growth. In this paper, the IC under high temperature storage (HTS) tests at $175^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$ are meticulously investigated. Thermal exposure resulted in the IMC growth, Kirkendall void and the crack of the Au-Al phases. The crack propagation occurs resulting in the failure of the Au-Al ball bonds. As the IC was exposed at the high temperature, decreased in the lifetime.

  • The characteristics of GaN epitaxial layers grown on silicon (111) substrates by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy have been investigated. The only control of AIN thickness was found to decrease the stress sufficiently for avoiding crack formation in an overgrown thick ($2.6{\mu}m$) CaN layer. X-ray diffraction measurementsare used to determine the effect of AIN thickness on the strain in the subsequent GaN layers. The 437arcsec linewidth on the (002) x-ray rocking curve also attest the high crystalline quality of GaN on Si (111).
