  • J-R curve tests were performed on 1T compact specimens of SA516 Gr. 70 carbon steels under reverse cyclic loading. A Direct-Current Potential Drop (DCPD) method, one of the nondestructive techniques to detect flaw of structure, is being increasingly used for monitoring crack initiation and stable crack growth in typical fracture mechanics specimens for J-R testing. In many aspects this method is simpler than the unloading compliance method. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the J-R Curve according to the crack length measurement techniques under reverse cyclic loading. In order to prove the reliability and repeatability of the DCPD method, the crack length measured by using DCPD method was compared to one determined from unloading compliance. Consequently, this DCPD method correlated well with J-R curves and crack extension measurements determined from unloading compliance method.

Crack Propagation at Boundary Face of Composite Compact Tension Specimen

  • In this study, fatigue crack propagation in composite material under fatigue is investigated by simulation result. When another material on the specimen exists vertically to the crack line, the phenomena that crack may go straight or propagate along the boundary face according to the elastic modulus ratio of another material to matrix are investigated with compact tension specimen by compliance method. Crack propagation direction is evaluated by compliance method. By arranging this study result systematically about the crack propagation behavior due to the stiffness of inhomogeneous material, high-tech material (automobile, aircraft and steel industry) can be improved. The estimation of safety design and life (construction & nuclear power station, etc.) will be of great value industrially.

영상처리기법을 이용한 CCT 시편 균열의 자동관측법에 관한 연구 (The Measurement of the Crack in CCT Specimen Using the Image Processing Techniques)

  • In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation behavior, the crack length is one of the most important factors. In the test of crack propagation, compliance method is widely used to detect crack length. The measurement of surface crack length is not so easy with compliance method. In this study, the image processing technique was applied to measure the surface crack length. CCD(Charge-coupled device) camera was used to observe the crack image and the computer program to detect crack length from stored crack image was developed. CCT(Center Cracked Tension) specimen was used to compare the compliance method with the image processing technique. The crack length which detected by the image processing techniques was found to be well consistent with that from the optical measurement.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity examination of the J-R curve characteristics for the nuclear reactor pressure vessel steels and Al alloys by the load ratio analysis. The results of the load ratio analysis are compared with those of the J-R curve which are obtained by the ASTM unloading compliance method. The crack length calculated by the load ratio analysis is agree well with the measured final crack length. The slope of the exponential J-R curve estimated by the load ratio analysis is slightly smaller than that by the ASTM unloading compliance method. The J-R curve obtained by the ASTM unloading compliance method is over-predicted and should be offsetted due to the initial negative crack. On the other hand, the load ratio analysis method can evaluate the J-R curve by only load-displacement curve without particular crack measurement equipment.

  • The elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and fracture resistance (J-R curve) of SA508-3 alloy steel used for nuclear reactor pressure vessel are investigated by using CT-type specimens. Fracture toughness tests are conducted by unloading compliance method and multiple specimen method at room temperature, -2$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The apparent negative crack growth phenomenon which usually arises in partial unloading compliance test is well known. The negative crack growth phenomenon in determining J sub(IC) or J-R cure from partial unloading compliance experiments may be eliminated by the offset technique. In this study, the evaluation of $J_{IC}$ multiple specimen method recommended by the JSME gives the most reliable results by using half-size CT(similar-type) specimens.

  • The direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and the unloading compliance (UC) method with a crack opening displacement gauge were applied simultaneously to the Zr-2.5Nb curved compact tension (CCT) specimens to determine which of the two methods can precisely determine the crack initiation point and hence the crack length for evaluation of their fracture toughness. The DCPD method detected the crack initiation at a smaller load-line displacement compared to the UC method. As a verification, a direct observation of the fracture surfaces on the curved compact tension specimens was made on the CCT specimens experiencing either 0.8 to 1.0 mm load line displacement or various loads from $50\%\;to\;80\%$ of the maximum peak load, or $P_{max}$. The DCPD method is concluded to be more precise in determining the crack initiation and fracture toughness, J in Zr-2.5Nb CCT specimens than the UC method.

피로균열개구거동을 이용한 짧은균열의 거동 분석 (Short Crack Analysis by Fatigue Crack Opening Behavior)

  • The characteristics of fatigue crack growth subject to out-of-plane bending fatigue are studied in terms of crack opening behavior by using pre-cracked smooth specimens. Crack opening stress is measured by an elastic compliance method which may precisely and continuously provide many date using strain gages during experiment. The results of the short crack and the long crack arranged by crack closure concept show that the effective stress gange ratio of short crack is grester than that of long crack, and ano- malous growth behavior of short crack may be elucidated by the variation of crack opening stress. When the variation of fatigue crack growth rate is arranged versus effective stress intensity factor range. Iinear relation is held also for the short crack. It shows that growth behavior of short crack can be quantitatively represent- ed by the fracture mechanics parameter using effective stress intensity factor range.

고주파 전기저항 용접강관의 제하 컴플라이언스법에 의한 파괴인성 평가 (Evaluation on fracture toughness of high frequency electric resistance welded steel pipe by unloading compliance method)

  • The fracture toughness, $J_{IC}$ of high frequency electric resistance welded steel pipe for smooth and side-grooved CT specimen was evaluated by unloading compliance method. The crack growth, .${\delta}a$ was obtained from the equation of Donald and Saxena & Hudak, and $J_{IC}$ was determined from the curve of J-${\delta}a$ relations. The crack growth on the experiment using unloading compliance method is underestimated as compared with ${\delta}a$ measured directly by the SEM, so the reliability of $J_{IC}$ from saxena & Hudak equation is large than that from Donald. The $J_{IC}$ value of side-grooved CT Specimen is estimated less than that of smooth, and this is the effect of the side-groove, the shear-lip of crack tip and the reduction of crack tunnelling phenomena.

  • 용접강구조물에서는 용접비드와 같은 응력집중부가 많이 존재한다. 또한 용접부에서는 용접결함이 발생할 가능성이 많다. 반복적인 피로하중이 응력집중부에 작용하면 응력집중부에서 피로균열이 발생하고, 발생된 균열의 전파에 의해 피로파괴사고를 일으킨다. 따라서 피로파괴사고를 미연에 방지하기 위하여 균열발생수명과 균열전파수명과 같은 피로수명의 파악이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 피로균열전파특성 연구에 사용되는 컴플라이언스를 도출하였다. 이 컴플라이언스는 피로균열의 자동화 측정에 활용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 CT시험편에 대하여 in-house FEM program을 사용하여 컴플라이언스를 계산하였다. 이 계산결과는 저자의 앞선 연구에서 본 프로그램을 사용하여 계산한 J integral의 계산결과와 대비하여 a/W와의 관계를 제시하였다. 그리고 또한 CT시험편 Back Face의 중앙부로부터 위아래 방향의 스트레인 분포에 계산을 실시하였다. 이 분포에서는 중심으로부터 위아래로 갈수록 스트레인이 감소하는 경향을 나타내었다. 이상의 계산과정으로부터 균열진전시험의 자동수행을 위한 컴플라이언스를 얻을 수 있었다. 이것으로부터 CT 시험편의 피로균열진전시험의 자동화에 활용이 가능하게 되었다.

Load-ratio 법에 의한 SA508C-3와 알루미늄 합금의 탄소성 파괴저항 곡선평가 (Evaluation on elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve of SA508C-3 and aluminum alloy steels by load-ratio method)

  • A method is proposed to evaluate the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve only with load displacement records without the crack length measurement in CT specimen. This method is based on the idea that the effect of plastic deformation and the crack growth can be measured only by using a load-displacement record. If we know the reference-load curve representing the hardening of specimen, then the crack extension can be calculated by the elastic compliance determined from the load ratio. The results of this proposed method were compared to those of the elastic-plastic fracture resistance curve for the ASTM standard unloading compliance method. The experimental results for two kinds of ductile materials showed that the proposed method well simulates the material J-R curves. This method is currently applied for CT specimens. but it can be extended to the other specimen geometries.
