  • Characteristics of fatigue crack propagation in martensite-ferrite duel phase steels have been investigated. In low .DELTA.K region, fatigue crack propagation resistance increases with increasing volume fraction of martensite, but the difference of crack propagation resistance resulted from the volume fraction decreases with increasing .DELTA.K. Also, threshold stress intensity factor range .DELTA.K$_{th}$ increases with increasing volume fraction of martensite, But fatigue crack propagation rates of dual-phase steels in terms of .DELTA.K$_{eff}$ are independent to volume fraction of martensite. These phenomena can be explained by the roughness induced crack closure due to crack deflection.n.n.

  • Ti-6Al-4V has been used widely in biomedical field. But because of its toxicity, the ${\beta}$ stabilizing element, V, in Ti-6Al-4V has been replaced by Nb, Ta. Ti-10Ta-10Nb has been developed for biomedical applications. The fatigue crack propagation behavior of Ti-alloy(Ti-10Ta-10Nb) was investigated, in comparison with that of pure Ti. In order to better understand the fundamental fatigue behavior of Ti-10Ta-10Nb, rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out. Ti-10Ta-10Nb has a better fatigue strength than pure Ti. In this paper, fatigue life has been predicted with Nisitani's equation of the fatigue crack propagation that can be established by measuring fatigue crack growth rates.

  • In this study residual stress in weldment was considered about the effect on the fatigue propagation and about the effect of redistribution of residual stress. Then, fatigue tests were conducted by the center notched specimens machined with welded plate. The residual stress and its redistribution after the crack growth were measured by the magnetizing stress indicator and hole-drilling method. Fatigue crack propagation was estimated by the specimens having residual stress redistributed after the cracks growth and having the effects of crack closure. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results. It had been found that the predicted crack propagation rates have a good agreement with experimental results when the redistribution of residual stress was considerd.

  • Corrosion fatigue crack propagation behavior of duplex stainless steel weldments in substitute ocean water was investigated to evalulate effects of micro-structural change and residual stresses. Fatigue crack propagation rate was found influenced markedly .alpha./.gamma. phase ratio but little by residual stresses. Fatigue crack propagation rate is higher in the corrosive environment than in room atmosphere. The crack propagation rate estimated by the measurement of striation spacing was higher than that, obtained by crack length measurement in low .DELTK.K region. At hight .DELTK.K region, however, both crack propagation rates were found to be identical.

  • Many researchers have studied woven fabric carbon-fiber-reinforced composite (CFRP) materials but the study of fatigue crack propagation in composites has been insufficient. It has known that the crack propagation behavior differs depending on the load and the fiber direction. In this study, the fatigue crack propagation along two different fiber array directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$) in plain woven CFRP composite was investigated. Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the woven CFRP composite under a sinusoidal waveform load with stress ratios of 0.1 at a frequency of 10 Hz. Once the results of the tests were obtained, fatigue crack propagation rates (da/dN) were plotted against the energy release rate amplitude (${\Delta}G$), and it was observed that either mode I crack propagation or mixed mode crack propagation occurs depending on the fiber array direction.

  • The aim of this study is an investigation of the interaction of two micro hole defects affecting fatigue crack initation life and propagation behavior. The locatio of two micro hole defects was considered as an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two micro hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is experimented under bending. When micro defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of local plastic strain strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore we introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation area at stress concentrations and propose a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two micro hole defects are studied experimentally.

  • Inorder ot estimate the running life of turbine rotors, fatigue crack propagation low, da/dN = C(${\DELTA}K)^m$, proposed by paris et al. has been widely applied. In this study, fatigue crack propagation rates for 16 samples of 1% Cr-Mo-V rotor steel were measured and statistical characteristics of m and C values in above equation were reviewed. The results are summarized as follows. 1. C and m follow a log-normal distribution and normal distribution, respectively. And the relation of C and shows a strong negative correlation. 2. Fatigue crack propagation equation can be expressed as da/dN=$4.11{\times}10^{-4}({\Delta}K/153.8)^m$, introducing the ralationship C=$C_oK_o^{-m}$. In this case, contribution of $C_o$ distribution to the distribution of log C shows very small compared to degrees of contribution by m.

  • For the $\beta$=1 specimen with constant thickness, Crack growth rate is smoothly increasing in the a-N curve. On the other hand for $\beta$=2 specimen with various thickness, the inflection point is observed in crack growth rate near the thickness interface. da/dN before the inflection point is increased, and da/dN after the point is decreased, compared to the $\beta$=1 specimen. da/dN near the thickness interface is approached zero. The descending point was observed earlier as $\beta$ increased. Considering the relation between da/dN and λ, the crack propagation rates for the case of $\beta$ =1 incrased almost linearly, however, the crack propagation rates for $\beta$=2,3 decreased more rapidly near the thickness interface. Additionally, the decreased point in da/dN for $\beta$=3 is farther from the thickness interface than the case for $\beta$ =2.

  • Welding structure contains residual stress due to thermal-plastic strain during welding process, and its magnitude and distribution depend on welding conditions. Cracks initiate from various defects of the weldment, propagate and lead to final fracture, The crack initiation and propagation processes are affected by the magnitude and distribution. Therefore, the magnitude and distribution of weldment residual stress should be considered for safety design and service of welding structures. Also it is very important that more accurate assessment method of fatigue crack growth must take into account the redistributing the residual stress quantitively. because the residual stress in weldment has characteristics of its redistribution with loading magnitude, number of cycles and fatigue crack propagation. In this study fatigue crack behavior of STS-304 weldment was investigated during crack propagation into tensile residual stress region or compressive residual stress region. Crack growth rates were predicted and compared with experimental results.

  • The effect of temperature, frequency and microstructure on fatigue crack propagation property of Ti-6A1-4V alloy has been investigated. The temperatures employed were room temperature, 20$0^{\circ}C$ and 40$0^{\circ}C$. The frequencies were 20Hz and 8 Hz. The microstructures tested were equiaxed and bimodal microstructures. Mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rates were measured in different test conditions. From the experimental results, following conclusions were obtained. Bimodal microstructure showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance to equiaxed microstructure. Under all test conditions, fatigue crack growth rate increased with test temperature. Wine the frequency decreasing from 20Hz to 8Hz, fatigue crack growth rate increased.
