The purpose of this paper is to apply the boundary element method to predict the crack growth path. The quarter point element with traction singularity at the crack tip is applied to compact tension type specimens and two inclined slit problems under compression load. The maximum stress criterion which was originally derived for the crack initiation is extended to the analysis of the crack propagation. The predicted crack paths with 1/4 crack growth increment of initial crack length agree quite well with experimental results. It is found that the computed crack path of the boundary element analysis is not mainly affected by the crack increment length.
The fatigue crack initiation behavior of plasma ion nitrided SACM645 steel was investigated through the rotary bending fatigue test and residual stress measurement by XRD. It was shown by XRD and EPMA that the plasma ion nitrided surface was composed of ${\gamma}^{\prime}(Fe_4N)$phase and ${\varepsilon}(Fe_{2-3}N)$phase, and that the nitrogen atoms existed in Fe matrix in diffusion layer. The OM, SEM and Auger spectroscopy showed that the depth of compound layer, mixed compound and diffusion layer, and diffusion layer was $8{\mu}m$, $30{\mu}m$ and $300{\mu}m$, respectively. However, the microhardness test showed that the depth of hardened layer was $500{\mu}m$. The tensile strength of the ion nitrided SACM645 was lower than that of the unnitrided SACM645, and the ion nitrided specimen was fractured without plastic deformation. The nitrided SACM645 showed much poorer low cycle fatigue properties than the unnitrided one. In rotary bending fatigue, the fatigue strength of the ion nitrided SACM645 was higher than that of the unnitrided specimen, and the fatigue crack initiation sites changed by applied fatigue stress levels. The XRD result showed that the ion nitrided SACM645 has the compressive residual stress from surface to $600{\mu}m$ deep and the tensile residual stress from $600{\mu}m$ to deeper site. It is thought that crack initiation takes place at the point where the total stress of residual stress and applied stress is maximum.

Catastrophic fracture cannot be avoided after cracks(initiated from pre-existing defects) propagate rapidly with speeds comparable to a sound wave velocity of the materials. Preventing catastropic failure, crack arrest fracture toughness defined from dynamic(or kinetic) fracture mechanics point of view has been introduced in determining accurate and/or proper crack arrest fracture toughness of a material. For the past decades, many studies have been carried out to render proper theoretical and experimental backgrounds on the use of the static plain strain crack arrest fracture toughness, $K_{1a}$ (which seems to be a material property). $K_{1a}$ has been used to predict the performance of thick walled structures and has been considered as a measure of the ability of a material to stop a fast running crack. Determination of such a material property is of prime importance to the nuclear reactor pressure vessel and bridge materials industries. However, standards procedures for measuring toughness associated with fast running cracks are yet to exist. This study intends to give insight on the determination of the crack arrest fracture toughness of materials such as polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), SM45C-steel, and A1 7075-T6. The effects of crack jump lengths and fast crack initiation stress intensity factor on the determination of $K_{1a}$ have been experimentally observed.erved.
In the study, the fatigue strength improvement and mechanism have been estimated by the Spot-Heating treatment on welded bead toes. For this, web-gusset specimens were made without residual stresses and the others with residual stresses imposed by Spot-Heating. The 4-point bending tests were performed in order to estimate the effect of spot-heating on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue test, fatigue strength of As-Welded specimen for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending has satisfied the grade of fatigue prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. As compare with As-Welded specimen and Spot-Heating specimen have increased about 20% for the fatigue strength at $7.7{\times}10^6$ cycles. The Spot-Heating by reformation of the residual stress on welded bead toes has greatly affected the fatigue crack propagation life, but has slightly affected the fatigue crack initiation life.

The main objective of this study is to develope the PSC-I girder for long span bridge. This study investigates the structural behavior of Postcracking stage and efficiency of proposed PSC-I girder using 1/2 scaled prototype beam specimen. Three specimens are tested under three point static loading system. Ideally, the Load-displacement relationship is trilinear. The crack patterns and failure mode of each specimen are reported in this paper and they are compared to each other with ductility and strength.
A coupled experimental and numerical study of shear fracture in the edge-notched beam specimens of quasi-brittle materials (concrete-like materials) are carried out using four point bending flexural tests. The crack initiation, propagation and breaking process of beam specimens are experimentally studied by producing the double inclined edge notches with different ligament angles in beams under four point bending. The effects of ligament angles on the shear fracturing path in the bridge areas of the double edge-notched beam specimens are studied. Moreover, the influence of the inclined edge notches on the shear-fracture behavior of double edge-notched beam specimens which represents a practical crack orientation is investigated. The same specimens are numerically simulated by an indirect boundary element method known as displacement discontinuity method. These numerical results are compared with the performed experimental results proving the accuracy and validity of the proposed study.
Fracture behaviors of pipes with local wall thinning are very important for the integrity of nuclear power plant. In pipes of energy plants, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe erosion-corrosion (E/C) damage. However, the effects of local wall thinning on strength and fracture behaviors of piping system were not well studied. In this paper, the monotonic bending tests were performed of full-scale welded and unwelded carbon steel pipes with local wall thinning. A monotonic bending load was applied to straight pipe specimens by four-point loading at ambient temperature without internal pressure. The observed failure modes were divided into four types; ovalization, crack initiation/growth after ovalization, local buckling and crack initiation/growth after local buckling. Also, the strengths of welded and unwelded piping system with local wall thinning were evaluated.

AISI 316 steel has been used extensively for heater and boiler tube of the structural plants such as power, chemical and petroleum plants under severe operating conditions. Usually, material degradation due to microcrack or precipitation of carbides and segregation of impurity elements, is occured by damage accumulated for long-term service at high temperature in this material. In this study, the effect of aging time on fracture toughness was investigated to evaluate the measurement of material degradation. The elastic-plastic fracture toughness behaviour of AISI 316 steel pipe aged at $550^{\circ}C$for 1h-10000h (the aged material) was characterized using the single specimen J-R curve technique and eletric potential drop method at normal loading rate(load-line displacement speed of 0.2mm/min) in room temperature and air environment. The fracture toughness data from above experiments is compared with the $J_{in}$ obtained from predicted values of crack initiation point using potential drop method.

Effects of circumferentially local wall thinning on the fracture behavior of pipes were investigated by monotonic four-point bending. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t= 0.2, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8, and an eroded length of I = 10 mm, 25 mm, and 120 mm. Fracture type could be classified into ovalization, local buckling, and crack initiation depending on the eroded length and eroded ratio. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors excepting failure due to cracking. It was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the eroded area.
Three points bending flexural test was modelled numerically to study the crack propagation in the pre-cracked beams. The pre-existing double internal cracks inside the beam models were considered to investigate the crack propagation and coalescence paths within the modelled samples. Notch configuration effects on the failure stress were considered too. This numerical analysis shown that the propagation of wing cracks emanating from the tips of the pre-existing internal cracks caused the final breaking of beams specimens. It was also shown that when two notches were overlapped, they both mobilized in the failure process and the failure stress was decreased when the notches were located in centre line. However, the failure stress was increased by increasing the bridge area angle. Finally, it was shown that in all cases, there were good agreements between the discrete element method results and, the other numerical and experimental results. In this research, it is tried to improve the understanding of the crack propagation and crack coalescence phenomena in brittle materials which is of paramount importance in the stability analyses of rock and concrete structures, such as the underground openings, rock slopes and tunnel construction.
