  • In this study, we investigated the state of $Y_2O_3$, as a major additive element in Fe-based ODS alloys, during mechanical alloying (MA) processes by thermodynamic approaches and experimental verification. For this purpose, we introduced $Ti_2O_3$ that formed different reaction products depending on the state of $Y_2O_3$ into the Fe-based ODS alloys. In addition, the reaction products of $Ti_2O_3$, Y, and $Y_2O_3$ powders were predicted approximately based on their formation enthalpy. The experimental results relating to the formation of Y-based complex oxides revealed that $YTiO_3$ and $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ were formed when $Ti_2O_3$ reacted with Y; in contrast, only $Y_2Ti_2O_7$ was detected during the reaction between $Ti_2O_3$ and $Y_2O_3$. In the alloy of $Fe-Cr-Y_2O_3$ with $Ti_2O_3$, $YTiO_3$ (formed by the reaction of $Ti_2O_3$ with Y) was detected after the MA and heat treatment processes were complete, even though $Y_2O_3$ was present in the system. Using these results, it was proved that $Y_2O_3$ decomposed into monoatomic Y and O during the MA process.

  • The grain growth characteristics of dual-phase (${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) containing high Cr-steel have investigate using ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$-single phases and (${\alpha}+{\gamma}$)dual-phase of 12%Cr Steel. The heat treatment has performed at $1000-1200^{\circ}C$ for 1-100hr. The results are as follows : 1) The grain growth rate in (${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) dual phase was substantially slower than that of single grain. 2) The relation between mean grain radius $\bar{{\gamma}}$ and annealing time t is, in general, described as following equation : $$(\bar{{\gamma}})^n-(\bar{{\gamma}_o})^n=K_n{\cdot}t{\cdots}{\cdots}(1)$$ i) In the case of single phase of high Cr steel, Eq.(1) is described as $(\bar{{\gamma}})^2-(\bar{{\gamma}_o})^2=K_2{\cdot}t$ and the grain growth is controlled by boundary migration. ii) In dual phase, the grain growth needs diffusion of alloying elements because the chemical composition of ${\alpha}$- and ${\gamma}$- phases differs from each other. When the volume fraction of ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$-phase was almost equal and ${\gamma}$-phase in the case of 80 and $90%{\gamma}$. Eq.(1) is described as $(\bar{{\gamma}})^3-(\bar{{\gamma}_o})^3=K_3{\cdot}t$ because the grain growth is controlled by volume diffusion iii) In the case of ${\gamma}$-rich phase (80 and $90%{\gamma}$), the grain growth of minor phase (10 and $20%{\alpha}$) is described as $(\bar{{\gamma}})^4-(\bar{{\gamma}_o})^4=K_4{\cdot}t$ because the boundary diffusion is predominent rather than volume diffusion.

  • Yttrium oxide is one of the most thermo-dynamically stable materials, so that it is generally used as a dispersoid in many kinds of dispersion strengthed alloys. In this study, a nickel-base superalloy is strengthened by dispersion of yttrium oxide particles. Elemental powders with the composition of Ni-22Cr-18Fe-9Mo were mechanically alloyed(M.A.) with 0.6 wt% $Y_2O_3$. The MA powders were then HIP(hot isotactic press)ed and hot rolled. Most oxide particles in Ni-22Cr-18Fe-9Mo base ODS alloy were found to be Y-Ti-O type. The oxide particles were uniformly dispersed in the matrix and also on the grain boundaries. Tensile test results show that the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of ODS alloy specimens were 1.2~1.7 times higher than those of the conventional $Hastelloy^{TM}$ X(R), which has the same chemical compositions with ODS alloy specimens except the oxide particles.

  • Three different white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their abrasion wear behavior in as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The specimens were produced using a 15㎏-capacity high frequency induction furnace. Melts were super-heated to $1600^{\circ}C$, and poured at $1550^{\circ}C$ into Y-block pepset molds. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 1: $M_7C_3$ and $M_6C$), 3%C -10%V-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2: MC and $M_2C$) and 3%C-17%Cr-3%V(alloy No. 3: $M_7C_3$ only). A scratching type abrasion test was carried out in the states of as-cast(AS), homogenizing(AH), air-hardening(AHF) and tempering(AHFT). First of all, the as-cast specimens were homogenized at $950^{\circ}C$ for 5h under the vacuum atmosphere. Then, they were austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 2h and followed by air-hardening in air. The air-hardened specimens were tempered at $300^{\circ}C$ for 3h. 1 ㎏ load was applied in order to contact the specimen with abrading wheel which was wound by 120 mesh SiC paper. The wear loss of the test piece(dimension: $50{\times}50{\times}5$ mm) was measured after one cycle of wear test and this procedure was repeated up to 8 cycles. In all the specimens, the abrasion wear loss was found to decrease in the order of AH, AS, AHFT and AHF states. Abrasion wear loss was lowest in the alloy No.2 and highest in the alloy No.1 except for the as-cast and homogenized condition in which the alloy No.3 showed the highest abrasion wear loss. The lowest abrasion wear loss of the alloy No.2 could be attributed to the fact that it contained primary and eutectic MC carbides, and eutectic $M_2C$ carbide with extremely high hardness. The matrix of each specimen was fully pearlitic in the as-cast state but it was transformed to martensite, tempered martensite and austenite depending upon the type of heat-treatment. From these results, it becomes clear that MC carbide is a significant phase to improve the abrasion wear resistance.

  • The effect of Cu addition on the corrosion characteristics of Zr alloys that developed for nuclear fuel cladding in KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) was evaluated. The alloys having different element of Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and Cu were manufactured and the corrosion tests of the alloys were performed in static autoclave at $360^{\circ}C$, distilled water condition. The alloys were also examined for their microstructures using the optical microscope and the TEM equipped with EDS and the oxide property was characterized by using X-ray diffraction. From the result of corrosion test more than 450 days, the corrosion rate of the Zr-based alloys was changed with alloying element such as Nb, Sn, Fe, Cr and especially affected by Cu addition. The corrosion resistance was increased with increasing the Cu content and the tetragonal $ZrO_2$ layer was more stabilized on the Cu-containing alloys.

  • The alloy content of structural materials of nuclear power plants has been recognized an important factor in predicting flow accelerated corrosion (FAC). In particular, many literature data reported that chromium content is one of the most important alloying element and even a small amount of chromium is effective to suppress FAC. This report reviewed and compared chromium models of Ducreux, Bouchacourt, and Kastner which were used in predicting FAC rates. The plant data indicate that Ducreux model may be conservative for the specimen containing 0.15 wt% chromium. The related articles were reviewed as follows. Combined effects of chromium content, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), flow velocity, test time, and kinds of amine on the FAC rate were described. 0.1 wt% chromium in steel did not affect the FAC rate with changes in pH. The FAC rates pronounced with higher flow rate and increased with increasing test duration(600 d) for 0.013 wt% chromium. The FAC rates in mixed amine chemistry were higher than in ammonia chemistry, which may be lessened by the addition of chromium to the steel.

  • Contact tips are required to have a higher resistance to wear and thus to have an extended life time under the advanced GMAW welding process. Several requirements have been specified and employed by domestic industries for selecting their tips for such a purpose. However no attempt has been made to justify their requirements based on the experimental data of wear resistance or life time of contact tips. In this study, five different contact tips with three different compositions were employed for actual GMA welding up to 4 hours and were evaluated their wear resistance by measuring in every one hour the area of enlarged hole at the exit side. Experimental results clearly showed that the Cr-containing tips strengthened by precipitation hardening have much better resistance to wear than those made by work hardening. It was further noticed that Cr is an excellent alloying element for improving the wear resistance of contact tips only when it is in an properly aged condition. Initial hardness may play some role in the early stage of wear but not in the later stage of welding because the microstructure of tip changes significantly by the prolonged exposure to welding arc heat. Based on these results, critical review has been made on the current requirements employed by domestic industries. Of importance is that a new guideline has been confirmed to be more reasonable.

  • This study is for investigating the effect of induction heating with various alloy elements to manufacture the pre-heat treated steels of 100kgf/$mm^2$ for cold heading. For four kinds of steels, the condition of induction heating (especially, induction tempering) were observed, and their microstructure and tensile and compressive properties were investigated. The middle carbon steel and the low carbon Cr-Mo steel are needed the higher Grange-Baughman tempering parameter than that of the low carbon Cr steel to obtain 100kgf/$mm^2$ tensile strength. For accomplishing the pre-heat treated steel of 100kgf/$mm^2$ tensile strength having advanced cold heading. It is needed that the pre-heat treated steel is manufactured by induction quenching and tempering with the low carbon alloy steel to have the high ratio of ferrite and the fine globular cementite simultaneously.

  • Through mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and hot rolling, a 9%Cr Fe-based oxide dispersion-strengthened alloy sample was fabricated. The tensile strength of the alloy is significantly improved when the microstructure is modified during the post-consolidation process. The alloy samples were strengthened as the cooling rates increased, though the elongation was somewhat reduced. With a cooling rate of $800^{\circ}C/s$ after normalization at $1150^{\circ}C$, the alloy sample showed a tensile strength of 1450 MPa, which is about twice that of the hot rolled sample; however, at $600^{\circ}C$ the tensile strength dramatically decreased to 620 MPa. Optical microscope and transmission electron microscope were used to investigate the microstructural changes of the specimens. The resultant strengthening of the alloy sample could be mainly attributed to the interstitially dissolved nitrogen, the fraction of the tempered martensite, the fine grain and the presence of a smaller precipitate. The decrease in the tensile strength was mainly caused by the precipitation of vanadium-rich nitride.
