An optimization framework has been established and applied to a shipshape parametric FPSO hull design. A single point moored (SPM) shipshape floating system suffers a significant level of the roll motion in both the wave frequencies and low wave frequencies, which presents a coupling effect with the horizontal weathervane motion. To guarantee the security of the operating instruments installed onboard, a parametric hull design of an FPSO has been optimized with improved hydrodynamics performance. With the optimized parameters of the various hull stations' longitudinal locations, the optimization through Genetic Algorithms (GAs) has been proven to provide a significantly reduced level of the 1st-order and 2nd-order roll motion. This work presents a meaningful framework as a reference in the process of an SPM shipshape floating system's design.
The stability problem of steady motion of a rigid body with multi-elastic appendages and multi-liquid-filled cavities, in the presence of no external forces or torque, is considered in this paper. The flexible appendages are modeled as the clamped -free-free-free rectangular plates, or/and as the discrete mass- spring sub-system. The motion of liquid in every single ellipsoidal cavity is modeled as the uniform vortex motion with a finite number of degrees of freedom. Assuming that stationary holonomic constraints imposed on the body allow its rotation about a spatially fixed axis, the equation of motion for such a systematic configuration can be very complex. It consists of a set of ordinary differential equations for the motion of the rigid body, the uniform rotation of the contained liquids, the motion of discrete elastic parts, and a set of partial differential equations for the elastic appendages supplemented by appropriate initial and boundary conditions. In addition, for such a hybrid system, under suitable assumptions, their equations of motion have four types of first integrals, i.e., energy and area, Helmholtz' constancy of liquid - vortexes, and the constant of the Poisson equation of motion. Chetaev's effective method for constructing Liapunov functions in the form of a set of first integrals of the equations of the perturbed motion is employed to investigate the sufficient stability conditions of steady motions of the complete system in the sense of Liapunov, i.e., with respect to the variables determining the motion of the solid body and to some quantities which define integrally the motion of flexible appendages. These sufficient conditions take into account the vortexes of the contained liquids, the vibration of the flexible components, and coupling among the liquid-elasticity solid.

This paper presents feedforward controllers to improve the control performance of the motion and grasping force of a surgical instrument used in an MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery) robot. The surgical instrument has a long distance between the drive motors and its active joints. Therefore, the gripper on the instrument is controlled by a cable drive mechanism, which generates a coupled motion between the wrist joint and the grip direction. In order to solve the problem, this paper analyzes the pulley composition of the surgical instrument and proposes feedforward controllers to eliminate the coupled motion. Furthermore, feedforward controllers to regulate the grasping force are proposed to deal with another coupling problem between the grasping force of the instrument and the motion of the instrument joints. The experimental results demonstrate the improved control performance of the motion and grasping force of the instrument.

In this paper the liquid sloshing effects in vertical storage tanks under earthquake loadings are studied. The study focuses on the investigation of the effect of the flexibility of the tank wall on the hydrodynamic forces exerted on it. The tank structure is modelled using finite elements. The motion of the liquid is expressed by the Laplace equation. The equation of motion of the fluid shell system is formulated including the coupling effect between the shell motion and the sloshing motion. A procedure is developed to obtain the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the sloshing motion as well as the shell vibration. Dynamic analyses have been carried out for several tanks with different dynamic characteristics utilizing the time history method as well as the response spectra method.
The aim of this study was to investigate the alteration of lumbar spine and trunk postures on different load-carrying types and amounts under static loading. Two load-carrying types(unilateral carrying: UC vs. bilateral carrying: BC) and four different loads(0, 5, 10, and 15 kg) were randomly tested in this study. Carrying a heavy bag would affect human body posture, specifically lumbar spine curvature, which is considered as one of sources of back problems. Previous studies have not paid attention to the approach of the multisegment model of the lumbar spine and trunk. This study separated two compartments of trunk segment(the lumbar and thorax) in the analysis. The multisegment model of the lumbar spine in addition to Helen-Hayes marker set was used. Eight motion analysis cameras and a force plate were utilized. Ten male subjects(mean mass, $70.6{\pm}3.97$ kg; mean height, $178{\pm}4.18$ m) having no musculoskeletal disease participated in this study. We analyzed trunk angles in three anatomical planes and the spinal curvature in sagittal and frontal planes. Increased loading in both UC and BC significantly resulted in increases in trunk forward lean but only UC induced increases in trunk lateral lean. In addition, increased loading in BC produced flatten lumbar curvature in sagittal plane. As far as coupling motion, subjects tended to use axial rotation of the lumbar spine in transverse plane in response to increased UC loading. Finally, it is concluded that the increased static loading in UC rather than in BC tends to causes combined alterations of the spinal postures(sagittal and transverse planes together), which would be vulnerable to improper mechanical stresses on the spine.
In this paper, we present a numerical model for fluid-structure interaction between structure built of porous media and acoustic fluid, which provides both pore pressure inside porous media and hydrodynamic pressures and hydrodynamic forces exerted on the upstream face of the structure in an unified manner and simplifies fluid-structure interaction problems. The first original feature of the proposed model concerns the structure built of saturated porous medium whose response is obtained with coupled discrete beam lattice model, which is based on Voronoi cell representation with cohesive links as linear elastic Timoshenko beam finite elements. The motion of the pore fluid is governed by Darcy's law, and the coupling between the solid phase and the pore fluid is introduced in the model through Biot's porous media theory. The pore pressure field is discretized with CST (Constant Strain Triangle) finite elements, which coincide with Delaunay triangles. By exploiting Hammer quadrature rule for numerical integration on CST elements, and duality property between Voronoi diagram and Delaunay triangulation, the numerical implementation of the coupling results with an additional pore pressure degree of freedom placed at each node of a Timoshenko beam finite element. The second original point of the model concerns the motion of the outside fluid which is modeled with mixed displacement/pressure based formulation. The chosen finite element representations of the structure response and the outside fluid motion ensures for the structure and fluid finite elements to be connected directly at the common nodes at the fluid-structure interface, because they share both the displacement and the pressure degrees of freedom. Numerical simulations presented in this paper show an excellent agreement between the numerically obtained results and the analytical solutions.
In this paper, we propose a new framework that can express the detailed movement of liquid sprayed from wet hair or fur. In wet hair, not only the friction and adhesion of the hair but also the movement of the liquid has a distinctive motion compared to the dry hair. However, the recently proposed techniques only considered the contact force and friction of the hair and did not improve the movement of the liquid dispersed in the wet hair. This problem is detrimental to the quality of the result because it does not capture the detailed features expressed in the interaction of hair and liquid. The main point of this paper is to alleviate this problem and improve the quality of the result. As a result, we propose a combining framework that can efficiently express FLIP (Fluid-implicit particle) based fluid simulation and interaction of hair particles. The proposed method expresses the movement of the liquid sprayed in a curved shape which was not expressed in previous studies.

This study is constructed to investigate the sloshing effect on the motions of a two-dimensional rectangular cylinder experimentally and numerically. The modes of motion under consideration are sway and roll, and also experimental cases are divided by two categories; 1-DoF roll motion and 2-DoF motion (Coupling sway and roll). It is found that the sway response is considerably affected by the motion of the fluid, particularly near the sloshing natural frequency, while the roll response changes comparatively small. The dominant mode of motion is analyzed for 2-DoF experiments as well. The measured data for 1-DoF motions is compared with numerical results obtained by the Multi-modal approach. The numerical schemes vary in detail with the number of dominant sloshing modes; i.e. there is a single dominant mode for the Single-dominant method, while the Model 2 method assumes that the first two modes are superior. For the roll motion, numerical results obtained by the two different methods are relatively in good agreement with the experiments, and these two results are similar in most wave frequency range. However, the discrepancies are apparent where the fluid motion is not governed by a single mode. But both of numerical methods over-predict the motion at the vicinity of the sloshing natural frequency. In order to correct the discrepancy, the modal damping needs to be investigated more precisely. Furthermore, another multi-modal approach, such as the Boussinesq-type method, seems to be required in the region of the intermediate liquid.

The present study proposes a time domain model for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) simulation of a catenary riser under the combination of the current and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. In this model, the hydrodynamic force of VIV comprises excitation force, hydrodynamic damping and added mass, which are taken as functions of the non-dimensional frequency and amplitude ratio. The non-dimensional frequency is related with the response frequency, natural frequency, lock-in range and the fluid velocity. The relatively oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion is taken into account in the fluid velocity. Considering that the added mass coefficient and the non-dimensional frequency can affect each other, an iterative analysis is conducted at each time step to update the added mass coefficient and the natural frequency. This model is in detail validated against the published test models. The results show that the model can reasonably reflect the effect of the added mass coefficient on the VIV, and can well predict the riser's VIV under stationary and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. Based on the model, this study carries out the VIV simulation of a catenary riser with harmonic vessel motion. By analyzing the bending moment near the touchdown point, it is found that under the combination of the ocean current and oscillatory flow the vessel motion may decrease the VIV response, while increase the excited frequencies. In addition, the decreasing rate of the VIV under vessel surge is larger than that under vessel heave at small vessel motion velocity, while the situation becomes opposite at large vessel motion velocity.

The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.
