Study on Property Change with a Fire Retardant Content in the Manufacture of Polymer Composites for Cable Sheath

  • Four different polymer compounds were manufactured to make cable sheaths for the shipping industry. Two kinds of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as the main matrix polymers and EVA-grafted maleic anhydride (EVA-g-MAH) as the coupling agent were selected for compounding with fire retardant, crosslinking agent, filler, plasticizer, and other additives. The properties of the four compounded materials were investigated with different contents of the fire retardant, silanecoated magnesium dihydroxide (S-MDH). In the rheology evaluation, the $t_{60}$ and ${\Delta}T$ values increased with increasing S-MDH contents. On the other hand, the tensile strength decreased with increasing S-MDH content due to a relative decrease in binder polymers. With increasing S-MDH content, fire resistance increased, but cold resistance showed no obvious enhancement due to the polar effect of vinyl acetate in EVA.

  • A series of novel ascorbic acid derivatives, polyethoxylated ascorbic acid (PEAA) were synthesized by coupling ascorbic acid with polyethylene glycol (PEG) of two molecular weights (MW: 350 and 550) at the C-2 or C-3 hydroxyl group (2PEAA350, 3PEAA350, 2PEAA550, 3PEAA550) to increase the stability and retain the activity, as a skin whitening agent. Their stability, scavenging activity against free radical, inhibitory activity against tyroxinase and inhibitory activity of melanin synthesis in Bl6 melanoma cell of PEAAs were evaluated in viかo and compared with those of ascorbic acid and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid (3OEAA), a Con stable vitamin C derivative. Among PEAAs, 2PEAA350 and 2PEAA550 tad high scaveniging activity against See radical, inhibitory activity against tyrosinase and inhibitory activity if melanogenesis but low stability, 3PEAA350 had high stability and moderate scavenging activity against free radical, infibitory activity against tyrosinase and inhibitory activity of melanogenesis. The stability, scavenging activity against free radical and inhibitory activity of melanogenesis of 3PEAA350 were higher than those of 30EAA. The most stable 3PEAA350 among PEAAs was nontoxic in various toxicological tests. These results suggest that PEAA would be a good whitening agent far enhancing stability and bioavailability.

유-무기 하이브리드 코팅 용액을 이용한 고굴절 하드코팅 막의 제조 (Preparation of Hard Coating Films with High Refractive Index using Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coating Solutions)

  • 출발물질인 TTIP로부터 이산화티탄 졸을 합성하여 무기물로 사용하고 유기물로서 실란커플링제인 methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APS), glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES)을 2종 혹은 3종씩 복합 사용하여 유-무기 하이브리드 코팅 용액을 제조하였다. 그 후 코팅 용액을 기재인 PC시트 위에 스핀 코팅시키고, 열경화 시켜 하드코팅 막을 제조하였다. 2종 실란커플링제를 혼합하여 제조된 코팅 막들은 기재와의 부착력과 연필경도가 우수하지 못했으나, 3종 실란커플링제를 혼합하여 제조한 코팅 막은 2H~4H의 향상된 연필경도와 5B의 우수한 부착력을 나타내었다. 이산화티탄 졸의 첨가량이 20 g인 코팅 막의 굴절률은 550 nm에서 1.56을 나타내었으나 이산화티탄 졸의 첨가량을 20 g에서 30 g으로 증가시킨 경우, 코팅 막의 굴절률이 1.63으로 향상되었다.

Influence of Silane Coupling Agents on the Interlaminar and Thermal Properties of Woven Glass Fabric/Nylon 6 Composites

  • In this study, the influence of silane coupling agents, featuring different organo-functional groups on the interlaminar and thermal properties of woven glass fabric-reinforced nylon 6 composites, has been by means of short-beam shear tests, dynamic mechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that the fiber-matrix interfacial characteristics obtained using the different analytical methods agree well with each other. The interlaminar shear strengths (ILSS) of glass fabric/nylon 6 composites sized with various silane coupling agents are significantly improved in comparison with that of the composite sized commercially. ILSS of the composites increases in the order: Z-6076 with chloropropyl groups in the silanes > Z-6030 with methacrylate groups> Z-6020 with diamine groups; this trend is similar to that of results found in an earlier study of interfacial shear strength. The dynamic mechanical properties, the fracture surface observations, and the thermal stability also support the interfacial results. The improvement of the interfacial properties may be ascribed to the different chemical reactivities of the reactive amino end groups of nylon 6 and the organo-functional groups located at the ends of the silane chains, which results from the increased chemical reactivity in order chloropropyl > methacrylate > diamine.

  • 본 연구에서는 실란 커플링제 프로필트리메톡시실란(propyltrimethoxysilane, PTMS)을 사용하여 CaCO3 나노입자의 표면을 개질하였으며, 개질된 CaCO3 나노입자를 에멀젼 유화제 및 기포 안정화제로의 적용 가능성을 시험하고자 나노입자 표면의 소수성 변화가 기포와 에멀젼의 안정성에 미치는 영향에 관하여 살펴보았다. PTMS에 의한 CaCO3 나노입자의 표면 개질은 FT-IR, TGA, DSC 분석을 통하여 확인하였으며, XRD 및 XPS 분석을 통하여 나노입자 표면의 원소 분석을 실행하였다. 또한 부상 시험과 접촉각 측정을 통하여 PTMS 농도가 CaCO3 나노입자의 표면 개질에 미치는 영향에 관하여 살펴보았다.

Influence of Hwangto on the Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour Reinforced High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Composites

  • The mechanical properties of wood flour, Hwangto (325 and 1,400 mesh per 25,4 mm) and coupling agent-reinforced HDPE composites were investigated in this study. Hwangto and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) were used as an inorganic filler and a coupling agent, respectively. The addition of Hwangto and MAPE to virgin HDPE also increased the Young's modulus in the smaller degree. The addition of wood flour and Hwangto to virgin HDPE increased the tensile strength, due to the high uniform dispersion of HDPE by high surface area of Hwangto in HDPE and wood flour. MAPE also significantly increased the tensile strength. When wood flour was added, there was no notable difference on the tensile properties, in terms of Hwangto particle size. Hwangto also improved the flexural modulus and strength of reinforced HDPE composites. With different particle sizes of Hwangto, there was no considerable difference in flexural modulus and strength of reinforced HDPE composites. The addition of Hwangto showed slightly lower impact strength than that of wood flour. However, the particle size of Hwangto showed no significant effect on the impact strength of reinforced composites. In conclusion, reinforced HDPE composites with organic and inorganic fillers provide highly improved mechanical properties over virgin HDPE.

페니실린 농도 검출을 위한 광지시형 전위차 센서의 제작 및 감응특성 (Fabrication and Response Characteristics of the Light Addressable Potentiometric Sensor for Detecting the Penicillin Concentration)

  • In this study, we developed the measuring system based on light addressable potentiometric sensor for the quantitative analysis of penicillin that is very important element in medicine and pharmacy, clinic. It is investigated the response characteristics by enzyme reaction with penicillinase. First, the surface pre-treatment process of the $Si_{3}N_{4}$ was established. The coupling agent was made using self assembled monolayer method and it was confirmed the immobilization process by AFM. Also, as the measuring system, potentiostat, signal processing part etc. was made by Lab VIEW software, it was reduced detecting time as well as simplifying the system. Fabricated device was shown excellent pH response characteristics, 57 mV/ pH in the range of pH $2{\sim}11$. The response characteristics was 60 mV/decade in the range of $0.1{\sim}10{\;}mM$.

폐석분-폐타이어 분말 충전 혼성복합재료의 제조 및 기계적 특성 (Fabrication and Mechanical Properties of the Hybrid Composites Filled with Waste Stone and Tire Powders)

  • 폐타이어와 폐석분 재활용을 위하여, 불포화 폴리에스터 수지에 폐석분과 폐타이어 분말의 충전량을 변화시켜 폐타이어-폐석분/폴리에스터 혼성 복합재료를 제조하였다. 매트릭스 내에서 충전제의 계면결합력과 분산력을 향상시키기 위하여 실란 커플링제[${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane(${\gamma}$-MPS)]를 사용하여 표면처리하고 복합재를 제조한 후 구조와 물성을 확인하였다. 실란 커플링제로 충전제를 표면처리한 경우 초기 열분해온도가 상승하고 중량감소율이 감소하였다. 커플링제로 표면처리된 경우 높은 기계적 물성을 얻었으며, 실란 농도 2 wt%에서 매트릭스 및 WTC의 함량에 관계없이 최대값을 나타내었다. 유기 충전제 증가에 따라 복합재의 기공도는 증가하나 표면처리에 의해 감소시킬 수 있으며 유기 충전제의 함량에 따라 기공 크기분포도 변화한다.

Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Functionalized with PS via Emulsion Polymerization

  • This study demonstrated the in-situ functionalization with polymers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) via emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene-functionalized MWNTs were prepared in an aqueous solution containing styrene monomer, non-ionic surfactant and a cationic coupling agent ([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trime-thylammonium chloride (MATMAC)). This process produced an interesting morphology in which the MWNTs, consisting of bead-string shapes or MWNTs embedded in the beads, when polymer beads were sufficiently large, produced nanohybrid material. This morphology was attributed to the interaction between the cationic coupling agent and the nanotube surface which induced polymerization within the hemimicellar or hemicylindrical structures of surfactant micelles on the surface of the nanotubes. In a solution containing MATMAC alone without surfactant, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were not well-dispersed, and in a solution containing only surfactant without MATMAC, polymeric beads were synthesized in isolation from CNTs and continued to exist separately. The incorporation of MATMAC and surfactant together enabled large amounts of CNTs (> 0.05 wt%) to be well-dispersed in water and very effectively encapsulated by polymer chains. This method could be applied to other well-dispersed CNT solutions containing amphiphilic molecules, regardless of the type (i.e., anionic, cationic or nonionic). In this way, the solubility and dispersion of nanotubes could be increased in a solvent or polymer matrix. By enhancing the interfacial adhesion, this method might also contribute to the improved dispersion of nanotubes in a polymer matrix and thus the creation of superior polymer nanocomposites.

Bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine 커플링제로 개질된 실리카 나노입자의 실란화도 정량 분석 (Quantitative Analysis of Silanization Degree of Silica Nanoparticles Modified with Bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine Coupling Agent)

  • 본 연구에서는 실리카 나노입자의 표면을 실란 커플링제인 bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine(BTMA)을 사용하여 개질하였다. BTMA의 가수분해 시간, 농도 및 개질 시간의 변화가 실리카 표면 개질 반응에 미치는 영향을 Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), elemental analysis(EA) 및 고체 상태 cross-polarization magic angle spinning(CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR)법을 사용하여 분석을 수행하였다. 연구결과 BTMA의 가수분해 시간, 농도 및 표면 개질 시간이 증가할수록 3737 $cm^{-1}$에 나타나는 실리카의 고립 실란올(isolated silanol) 피크의 세기는 점점 약해지고, 도입되는 BTMA의 $-CH_2$ 기에 의한 신축(stretching) 및 굽힘(bending) 진동 피크는 점점 강하게 나타났다. EA 분석을 통한 N 및 C의 함량에서도 같은 경향을 나타내었다. BTMA를 사용한 실리카 입자의 처리 조건 중, BTMA의 농도 변화는 실리카 입자 표면과 반응하는 BTMA의 양에 큰 영향을 미치지만, BTMA의 가수분해 시간 및 표면 개질 반응 시간의 영향은 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다.
