  • RFID system had used same frequency for transmit and receive signal. RFID recognize range is restrict, because of receive and transmit signal coupled each other. That cause directional coupler is not ideal isolation characteristic and antenna missmatching. So we proposed lambda/8 section directional coupler and design high isolation to use RFID.

  • This paper reports a side-coupled asymmetric $1{\times}2$ plastic optical fiber coupler for an optical sensor system. The dependence of the optical power coupling ratio on the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer in both the forward and backward directions was examined based on the geometrical optics. It was confirmed experimentally that the coupling ratios can be optimized by controlling the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer. A maximum forward coupling efficiency > 93% was achieved.

  • Revision and establish of KS(Korean Standards) is currently actively discussed. It is just the time for a new world class standards under the new system with WTO(World Trade Organization). This paper is a part of "Researchs on the Standards in Railway rolling stock Field", as one of KS establish projects. The aim of this study is to define the requirements of railway rolling stock-designs, manufacture, and test methods for automatic complex coupler. In the former KS, there is no items matched with this purpose. Therefore a new part of KS is proposed.

A Study on the Thermal Characteristics of a Coupler to Improve the Performance of Electrodeless Lamp (무전극 램프의 성능 향상을 위한 커플러의 열특성 연구)

  • The thermal characteristics of the electrodeless lamp are one of the main factors that determine the design and performance of the lamp. The coupler changes the impedance characteristic by heat and its use temperature is usually within about $150^{\circ}C$. In this study, we observed the phenomenon when the coupler was exposed at a temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ or higher, which has not been discussed so far. Two types of coupler A and coupler B with different spacing between the inner tube and the coupler were analyzed for electrical, thermal and optical properties and deterioration characteristics with different heat and heat shielding conditions. First, the impedance of the system is obtained and used as a criterion for analyzing the electrical characteristics through it. The diameters of the two types of couplers are 1 mm, and the experimental result shows that the coupler diameter is 1 mm, which can cancel out the loss of the magnetic field strength. Therefore, based on these results, when the coupler is exposed to high temperature of about $200^{\circ}C$, the efficient design method corresponding thereto is proposed.

Development of Filler Type Mechanical Splice for High Strength Re-bar (고강도 철근용 충전형 기계적 이음장치 개발 연구)

  • Various types of re-bar splicing methods have been developed and applied to reinforced concrete (RC) structures in the field. According to previous studies, the coupler splice is relatively superior to the lap splice in terms of cost efficiency when the diameter or strength of the re-bar is larger or higher. This study was performed to develop a filler type mechanical splice for a high-strength re-bar (SD600) in reinforced concrete structures. The deformed re-bars were inserted into a circular steel tube coupler and high-strength epoxy filler was then injected into the coupler. The splice system was completed by hardened filler in a coupler. The epoxy filler was used as the manufactured production epoxy to conduct experiments of filler type mechanical splice specimens, and to observe the failure loads and failure aspects of the specimens. For this goal, the experiment of one-way tensile test was conducted for the epoxy filler type mechanical splices specimens according to the compressive strength of epoxy, length of coupler, and diameter of re-bar. The shape of failure of the re-bar coupler splice showed that the re-bars were pulled between the lugs of the re-bars as a result of the shear fracture of the hardened epoxy. The actual failure load of the experiment specimen was approximately 2 times higher than the expected failure load of the epoxy filler, which greatly improves the failure load of the hardening epoxy filler due to the restraint of the steel coupler.

  • In this paper, we introduce a live wire power transmission line fault detection system using time-frequency domain reflectometry(TFDR). The TFDR is known that is more precise method than the other conventional ones. However, the TFDR is generally adopted only in fault detection for communication cable, and dead line power transmission line. Therefore, this paper suggests a TFDR system with coupler which separates 220V, 60Hz signal and TFDR reference signal for implementation the live wire fault detection system. This approach is verified by circuit simulation.

  • The rolling stock is composed of several cars. In order to operate in combination, it is necessary to connect the device, called coupler, between the rolling stocks. When the collision occurs between cars, couplers should be able to absorb the shock. Urban railway has used only rubber absorbers. But recently, the hydraulic buffer has been considered in general railway. In order to know the performance of the buffer it should be conducted to experiments. But whenever this combination change, we should experiments to know a lot of the dynamic behavior of each coupler. These experiments are generally replaced by the simulation, since a lot of time and cost consuming. The quasi-static map of hydraulic buffer obtained by the experiments is required for the simulation. However, the experiments for obtaining such a quasi-static map is costly and time consuming. In this paper, it proposes a method for deriving the quasi-static map of hydraulic buffer from the theoretical model.

  • The influences of the coupler consisting of stiffness and mass between neighboring two spans on mode localization are studied theoretically, and the results are confirmed by numerical examples. The mass of the coupler makes a structure sensitive to mode localization especially in higher modes while the stiffness does in all modes. A new type of delocalization phenomenon is observed for the first time in some modes for which mode localization does not occur or is very weak although structural disturbances are severe. A spring-mass system consisting of two substructures and a coupler connecting them is considered in the part of analytical study. As example structures for numerical analysis. simply supported continuous two-span beams with a coupler having a rotational stiffness and a mass moment of inertia on the mid support are considered.

  • The demands for the various type of directional coupler, which is for the sampling of the signal levels in mobile communication baseband or transceiver systems, are growing. The proposed dual directional coupler, which has three parallel coupled transmission lines, can provide the dual coupling and good isolation characteristics between the coupling ports. In this paper, the novel analysis method and the design equation of even and odd mode for the dual directional coupler, which is employing the asymmetrically coupled transmission lines, are proposed. Using the proposed method, the dual directional coupler for PCS system has been designed and fabricated. We obtained the desired coupling value and the high directivity of 40dB. Measured results show the validity of this design method.

  • We propose a new method to monitor the water level of spent fuel pool in a nuclear power plant without electric power. We also analyze the performance and limitation of the proposed method. Our method is based on the reflected optical power at the end of optical fiber through a $1{\times}N$ optical coupler. We reveal that there is no problem to monitor the water level when using a $1{\times}8$ optical coupler. However, when a $1{\times}16$ optical coupler is used, only 15 out of 16 output ports can be used due to Rayleigh back-scattering. When a $1{\times}32$ optical coupler is used, only 25 out of 32 output ports can be used to monitor the water level.
