This paper describes the application of the coupled FE-BEM (finite element-boundary element method) for the numerical harmonic analysis of the linear dynamic behaviour of a magnetostrictive Terfenol-D rod in water. The magnetostrictive rod is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce applied electric current in a helical coil around the rod to mechanical displacement. The theoretical derivation of the magnetostrictive matrix equation is described in detail. The steady-state resonance response of the displacement is shown. In addition, the directivity pattern and the radiation impedance are also shown.
A new analytical solution based on a third order shear deformation theory for the problem of static analysis of cross-ply doubly-curved shells is presented. The boundary-discontinuous generalized double Fourier series method is used to solve highly coupled linear partial differential equations with the mixed type simply supported boundary conditions prescribed on the edges. The complementary boundary constraints are introduced through boundary discontinuities generated by the selected boundary conditions for the derivation of the complementary solution. The numerical accuracy of the solution is compared by studying the comparisons of deflections, stresses and moments of symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated shells with finite element results using commercially available software under uniformly distributed load. Results are in good agreement with finite element counterparts. Additional results of the symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated and sandwich shells under single point load at the center and pressure load, are presented to provide data for the unsolved boundary conditions, benchmark comparisons and verifications.
This paper describes the calculation of the equivalent circuit parameters and the characteristic analysis of a capacitor-run type single-phase induction motor by means of the finite element method in coupled with the conventional equivalent circuit model. The circuit parameters of the stator are calculated form the lumped parameter and the slot leakage reactance of the rotor with the closed slot can be obtained by the use of slot pitch boundary condition. From the analysis result this combined equivalent circuit and finite element method which is used slot pitch boundary condition is compared with the experimental results, the validity of the method is proved.
Soils consist of an assemblage of particles with different sizes and shapes which form a skeleton whose voids are filled with water and air. Hence, soil behaviour must be analyzed by incorporating the effects of the transient flow of the pore-fluid through the voids, and therefore requires a two-phase continuum formulation for saturated porous media. The present paper presents briefly the Biot's basic theory of dynamics of saturated porous media with u-P formulation to determine the responses of pore fluid and soil skeleton during cyclic loading. Kelvin elements are attached to transmitting boundary. The Pastor-Zienkiewicz-Chan model has been used to describe the inelastic behavior of soils under isotropic cyclic loadings. Newmark-Beta method is employed to discretize the time domain. The response of fluid-saturated porous media which are subjected to time dependent loads has been simulated numerically to predict the liquefaction potential of a semi-infinite saturated sandy layer using finite-infinite elements. A settlement of 17.1 cm is observed at top surface. It is also noticed that liquefaction occurs at shallow depth. The mathematical advantage of the coupled finite element analysis is that the excess pore pressure and displacement can be evaluated simultaneously without using any empirical relationship.

Strip footing is an important type of shallow foundations and is commonly used beneath the walls. Analysis of shallow foundation involves the determination of stresses and deformations. Element free Galerkin method, one of the important mesh free methods, is used for the determination of stresses and deformations. Element free Galerkin method is an efficient and accurate method as compared to finite element method. The Element Free Galerkin method uses only a set of nodes and a description of model boundary is required to generate the discrete equation. Strip footing of width 2 m subjected to a loading intensity of 200 kPa is studied. The results obtained are agreeing with the values obtained using analytical solutions available in the literature. Parametric study is done and the effect of modulus of deformation, Poisson's ratio and scaling parameter on deformation and stresses are determined.

This paper presents a coupled FEM-BEM strategy for the numerical analysis of elastodynamic problems where infinite-domain models and complex heterogeneous media are involved, rendering a configuration in which neither the Finite Element Method (FEM) nor the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is most appropriate for the numerical analysis. In this case, the coupling of these methodologies is recommended, allowing exploring their respective advantages. Here, frequency domain analyses are focused and an iterative FEM-BEM coupling technique is considered. In this iterative coupling, each sub-domain of the model is solved separately, and the variables at the common interfaces are iteratively updated, until convergence is achieved. A relaxation parameter is introduced into the coupling algorithm and an expression for its optimal value is deduced. The iterative FEM-BEM coupling technique allows independent discretizations to be efficiently employed for both finite and boundary element methods, without any requirement of matching nodes at the common interfaces. In addition, it leads to smaller and better-conditioned systems of equations (different solvers, suitable for each sub-domain, may be employed), which do not need to be treated (inverted, triangularized etc.) at each iterative step, providing an accurate and efficient methodology.
A formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) based on Kirchhoff's hypothesis to analyse stiffened plates composed by beams and slabs with different materials is proposed. The stiffened plate is modelled by a zoned plate, where different values of thickness, Poisson ration and Young's modulus can be defined for each sub-region. The proposed integral representations can be used to analyze the coupled stretching-bending problem, where the membrane effects are taken into account, or to analyze the bending and stretching problems separately. To solve the domain integrals of the integral representation of in-plane displacements, the beams and slabs domains are discretized into cells where the displacements have to be approximated. As the beams cells nodes are adopted coincident to the elements nodes, new independent values arise only in the slabs domain. Some numerical examples are presented and compared to a wellknown finite element code to show the accuracy of the proposed model.
In this study, a numerical analysis method for soil-pile interaction in frequency domain problem is presented. The total soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts so called near field and far field. In the near field, beam elements are used for a pile and plain strain finite elements for soil. In the far field, dynamic fundamental solution for multi-layered half planes based on boundary element formulation is adopted for soil. These two fields are coupled using FE-BE coupling technique In order to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis, the dynamic responses of pile on multi-layered half planes are simulated and the results are compared with the experimental results. Also, the dynamic response analyses of interface spring elements are performed. As a result, less spring stiffness makes the natural frequency decrease and the resonant amplitude increase.

In this paper, using modified couple stress theory in place of classical continuum theory, and using shell model in place of beam model, vibrational behavior of nanotubes is investigated via the finite element method. Accordingly classical continuum theory is unable to correctly compute stiffness and account for size effects in micro/nanostructures, higher order continuum theories such as modified couple stress theory have taken on great appeal. In the present work the mass-stiffness matrix for cylindrical shell element is developed, and by means of size-dependent finite element formulation is extended to more precisely account for nanotube vibration. In addition to modified couple stress cylindrical shell element, the classical cylindrical shell element can also be defined by setting length scale parameter to zero in the equations. The boundary condition were assumed simply supported at both ends and it is shown that the natural frequency of nano-scale shell using the modified coupled stress theory is larger than that using the classical shell theory and the results of Ansys. The results have indicated using the modified couple stress cylindrical shell element, the rigidity of the nano-shell is greater than that in the classical continuum theory, which results in increase in natural frequencies. Besides, in addition to reducing the number of elements required, the use of this type of element also increases convergence speed and accuracy.
