  • Design of gas concentration process using a fully thermally coupled distillation is conducted with the commercial design software HYSYS. Detailed procedure of the design is explained, and the performance of the process is compared with that of a conventional system A structural design is exercised for the design convenience. The design outcome indicates that the procedure is simple and efficient. The structural information yielded from equilibrium distillation gives an easy formulation of distillation system which is the initial input required from the setup of the distillation system The performance of the new process indicates that an energy saving of 17.6 % is obtained compared with the conventional process while total number of trays maintains at the same.

  • The paper describes the study of concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) for coupled multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques in mechanical systems. This method is a solution to large scale coupled multidisciplinary system, wherein the original problem is decomposed into a set of smaller, more tractable subproblems. Key elements in CSSO are consisted of global sensitivity equation(GSE), subspace optimization (SSO), optimum sensitivity analysis(OSA), and coordination optimization problem(COP) so as to inquiry valanced design solutions finally, Automatic differentiation has an ability to provide a robust sensitivity solution, and have shown the numerical numerical effectiveness over finite difference schemes wherein the perturbed step size in design variable is required. The present paper will develop the automatic differentiation based concurrent subspace optimization(AD-CSSO) in MDO. An automatic differentiation tool in FORTRAN(ADIFOR) will be employed to evaluate sensitivities. The use of exact function derivatives in GSE, OSA and COP makes Possible to enhance the numerical accuracy during the iterative design process. The paper discusses how much influence on final optimal design compared with traditional all-in-one approach, finite difference based CSSO and AD-CSSO applying coupled design variables.

  • We propose comb-line filter using SIR(Stepped Impedance Resonator) with two transmission line. The coupling structure of the filter is double coupled line where two coupled lines are linked with cascade. We find out the inverter function of the filter. using even and odd mode impedance. The merits of the filter are that first, we can design transmission zero point at any frequency that we wanted without using lumped elements : chip capacitors and inductors. Second, we can design small size filters. To validate the inverter function of the filter with double coupled line we designed and fabricated two-pole band pass filter with the proposed filter structure.

  • This paper presents a semi-lumped balun transformer using conventional PCB process and its design theory and geometry for the maximally flat response and wide bandwidth using magnetically coupled LC resonators. The proposed balun is comprised of two pairs of coupled resonators which share one among three LC resonators. It provides an identical magnitude and phase difference of 180° between two balanced ports with DC isolation and an impedance transformation characteristic. Theoretical design and analysis were performed to optimize the inductance and capacitance values of proposed balun device for obtaining the wide bandwidth and maximally flat response in its pass-band. Three balun transformers with a center frequency of 500 MHz were demonstrated for proving the concept of design proposed. They were fabricated by using lumped chip capacitors and planar inductors embedded into a conventional 4-layered PCB substrate. They exhibited a maximum magnitude difference of 0.8 dB and phase difference within 2.4 degrees.

  • In this paper, forward-wave -3㏈ directional coupler with finite-thickness conductor and asymmetrical coupled lines are designed and experimentally verified using mode-matching based design methodology. Most of studies published in the literatures about the coupled lines are mainly concentrated on the adjustment of coupling amount by changing various geometric configurations. The analysis results in this paper show that thicker metalization requires reduced coupler length in the forward-wave directional coupler composed of asymmetrical coupled lines. Several forward-wave directional -3 ㏈ couplers with finite metalization thickness composed of asymmetrical coupled microstrip lines have been designed in the 5 ㎓ based on proposed design method. The measured data show -4.05㏈∼-4.09㏈ coupling at center frequency which is very closed to design value. The tight coupling has been implemented with accurate design methodology which take mentalization thickness into account.

  • Hybrid coupled shear walls in tall buildings are known as efficient structural systems to provide lateral resistance to wind and seismic loads. Multiple hybrid coupled shear walls throughout a tall building should be joined to provide additional coupling action to resist overturning moments caused by the lateral loading. This can be done using a coupling beam which connects two shear walls. In this study, experimental studies on the hybrid coupled shear wall were carried out. The main test variables were the ratios of coupling beam strength to connection strength. Finally, this paper provides background for rational design guidelines that include a design model to behave efficiently hybrid coupled shear walls.

  • An ultra-compact milimeter-wave broadband MMIC amplifier was designed using a direct-coupled topology combined with optimum feedback design. Significant reductionin the chip size was possible by employing the direct-coupled topology. Bias resistors required for the direct-coupled topology were also used as feedback elements. Feedback was optimized for millimeter-wave frequencies using reactive elements. The fabricated MMIC amplifier was realized in a chip size of 0.8mm$^{[-992]}$ and showed gains higher than 8 dB from 12 to 44 GHz. An output power of 30mW was achieved at 44 GHz with a drain efficiency of 10%.

  • Axiomatic Design has been developed as a general design framework during past two decades and TRIZ has been developed for a design tool over 50 years. Axiomatic design is quite excellent in that design should be decoupled. When a design matrix is established, the characteristics of the design are identified according to the coupling properties. If the design is coupled, a decoupling process should be found. However, axiomatic design does not specifically indicate how to decouple a coupled design. In this research, the coupling manner is classified into six patterns. Each pattern could be solved by an appropriate TRIZ module. A table, which matches the coupling pattern and a TRIZ module, is proposed for effective application of the two design theories. The decoupling ideas are proposed by using TRIZ modules. When the number of decoupled designs is more than one, the engineer should select the final idea. The proposed method is applied to practical cases such as a tape feeder and a beam adjuster of the laser marker.

  • This study discusses the design of a parallel-operated DC-DC single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) for low-voltage application and current sharing with a constant output voltage. A coupled inductor is used for parallel-connected SEPIC topology. Generally, two separate inductors require different ripple currents, but a coupled inductor has the advantage of using the same ripple current. Furthermore, tightly coupled inductors require only half of the ripple current that separate inductors use. In this proposed work, tightly coupled inductors are used. These produce an output that is more efficient than that from separate inductors. Two SEPICs are also connected in parallel using the coupled inductors with a single common controller. An analog control circuit is designed to generate pulse width modulation (PWM) signals and to fulfill the closed-loop control function. A stable output current-sharing strategy is proposed in this system. An experimental setup is developed for a 18.5 V, 60 W parallel SEPIC (PSEPIC) converter, and the results are verified. Results indicate that the PSEPIC provides good response for the variation of input voltage and sudden change in load.

  • In axiomatic approach for design evaluation, even if a mutual relation don't appear physical mapping of high level, it can appear in process mapping of low level through coupled PVs(Process Variables), but we must solve it for correct design evaluation. This paper handle a method for solving of coupled PVs by using axiomatic approach and CBR(Case-Based Reasoning). The methodology of proposal took still more shape through the instance of MCPs(Microcellular Plastics).
