  • In this study, the finite element method using 8-node isoparametric element is developed theoretically and simulated to see the deformation of soil and plate, when the circular plate resting on Boussinesq's soil type is loaded axisymmetrically. The results of numerical analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and experimental analysis are approximative, assuming that soil is elasto-plastic medium. The paper shows that the plastic zone of soil medium is displayed at the near the edge of plate at the first place; when the plastic zone of soil medium is linked around central axis, the external load is termed by critical load, and then the contact pressure changes abruptly, in this case it is approved to be the risk of shear failure.

  • In this paper, a comparative study of the effects of soil modelling on the interaction between tunnelling in soft soil and adjacent piled structure is presented. Several three-dimensional finite element analyses are performed to study the deformation of pile caps and piles as well as tunnel internal forces during the construction of an underground tunnel. The soil is modelled by two material models: the simple, yet approximate Mohr Coulomb (MC) yield criterion; and the complex, but reasonable hardening soil (HS) model with hyperbolic relation between stress and strain. For the former model, two different values of the soil stiffness modulus ($E_{50}$ or $E_{ur}$) as well as two profiles of stiffness variation with depth (constant and linearly increasing) were used in attempts to improve its prediction. As these four attempts did not succeed, a hybrid representation in which the hardening soil is used for soil located at the highly-strained zones while the Mohr Coulomb model is utilized elsewhere was investigated. This hybrid representation, which is a compromise between rigorous and simple solutions yielded results that compare well with those of the hardening soil model. The compared results include pile cap movements, pile deformation, and tunnel internal forces. Problem symmetry is utilized and, therefore, one symmetric half of the soil medium, the tunnel boring machine, the face pressure, the final tunnel lining, the pile caps, and the piles are modelled in several construction phases.

  • In this study, the finite element method for nonlinear problems is developed theroretically to see the design loads of foundation, when the circular plate resting on elasto-viscoplastic soil medium is loaded axisymmetrically. The paper shows that the plastic zone of soil medium is displayed at the near the edge of plate at the first place; when the plastic zone of soil medium is linked around central axis, the external load is termed by allowable load or design load, and then the contact pressure changes abruptly, in this case it is approved to be the risk of shear failure. The results of numerical analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and experimental analysis for a appropriate safety factor are approximative, but numerical results are smaller than the value based on Terzaghi's theory.

  • The stability assessment of a concrete liner of a compressed air storage tunnel should be performed by an approach which is different from that commonly used for the liners of road tunnels, since the liner is exposed to high air pressure. In this study, the stability analysis method for the liner of compressed air storage tunnel is proposed based on the elastic and elasto-plastic solutions of the thick-walled cylinder problem. In case of elastic analysis, the yield initiation condition at the inner boundary is considered as the failure condition of the liner, while the condition which results in the extension of yielding zone to a certain depth is taken as a failure indicator of the liner in the elasto-plastic analysis taking Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The application of the proposed method revealed that the influence of the relative magnitude of boundary loads on the stability of liner is considerable. In particular, noting that the estimation of the outer boundary load may be relatively difficult, it is thought that the precise prediction of outer boundary load is very important in the analysis. Accordingly, the emphasis is put on the selection of the liner installation time, which may govern the magnitude of outer boundary load.

  • This study deals with simple solutions for a spherical or circular opening excavated in elastic-brittle plastic rock mass compatible with a linear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) or a nonlinear Hoek-Brown (H-B) yield criterion. Based on total strain approach, the closed-form solutions of stresses and displacement are derived simultaneously for circular and spherical openings using original H-B and M-C yield criteria. Two simple numerical procedures are proposed for the solution of generalized H-B and M-C yield criteria. Based on incremental approach, the similarity solution is derived for circular and spherical openings using generalized H-B and M-C yield criteria. The classical Runge-Kutta method is used to integrate the first-order ordinary differential equations. Using three data sets for M-C and H-B models, the results of the radial displacements, the spreading of the plastic radius with decreasing pressure, and the radial and circumferential stresses in the plastic region are compared. Excellent agreement among the solutions is obtained for all cases of spherical and circular openings. The importance of the use of proper initial values in the similarity solution is discussed.

  • The design and construction of underground structures contain many substantial mincer dainties. A reasonable estimation of geotechnical parameters is of paramount importance and must be one of the most difficult tasks in designing and constructing underground structures. If the plastic zone exists by tunnel excavation, the ground response may also be dependent on the yield criterion mainly composed of strength parameters. In order to estimate unknown model parameters from the in-situ measurements as well as prior estimates for designing tunnels which have plastic zones, the Extended Bayesian Method(EBM) is adopted : an elasto-plastic finite element program is linked to the EBM as a mathematical model to predict the ground response. Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is used to represent the plastic behavior. A hypothetical underground site, where the ground behaves elasto-plastically, is adopted to demonstrate the validity of the proposed feedback system.

  • This Finite Element Program(TAFEM) has been developed to be able to carry out the structural analsis of tunnel section and simulate the surrounding ground behaviour due to New Austrian Tunnelling Method, of which main support is the surrounding ground, itself. The Elasto-plastic theory has been applied. The used finite elements are 8-noded isoparametric element(rock & shotcrete), 2 or 3-noded rod element(rock bolt) and infinite boundary element. The load incremental method and tangential stiffness method has been used. Associated flow rule was applied to plastic flow and yield criteria inclued not only Mohr-Coulomb but also Drucker-Prager. In this paper, Drucker-Prager yield criterion has been used. The relationship between plastic strain and stress is based on the incremental strain concept and stress-strain equation on the basis of the stress path of each gauss point has been adopted. It may be rational that rock is considered to be no-tension material, so that no-tension analysis has been adopted in accordance with the brittle fracture constitutive equation.

  • The use of shield is increasing day by day, because it's method is advantageous tunneling method to soft and collapsible ground. In case of analyzing shield tunnel by FEM, short term behavior of ground by initial heaving and tail void closure and long terms of it because of consolidation by changes of pore pressures in clay must be considered. In this paper, the shield tunneling construction stages was analyzed from 2 dimensional elasto - viscoplastic finite element program used Mohr - Coulomb yield criterion but not considered the changes of pore pressures. The object of investigation was N - 2 Tunnel. Since the good results of analysis compared to the measured behavior of ground for heaving, tail void closure and liner installation, this results can be applied to design and construction of shield tunneling for the subways, sewage lines etc.

  • In recent times, the subterranean caverns for storing crude oils and oil products are increasingly needed. The elasto-VIScoplastic DYNamic finite element analysis program(VISDYN) has been developed in order to investigate dynamic responses of the storage cavity. And validity of the program is studied through a numerical example. Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is adopted and associated flow rule is assumed. Geometrically nonlinear behaviour is taken into account using a total Lagrangian formulation. In dynamic deformation reponses, the difference between the steady state displacements and the unsteady state ones by the static analysis can be neglected.

  • Theoretical equations are derived to estimate the larteral earth pressures acting on piles with various shape of pile section due to lateral soil movements. And also examination of characteristics of the equations and comparison with other equations are carried out. The equations can be derived by calculating the difference between the two earth pressures acting on front and back sides of pile's row under plastic state satisfying Mohr-Coulomb's yield criterion, which is developed on tile soil between two piles among the piles in a row. The theoretical equations can reasonably consider the pile section-shape, the pile interval and the plastic condition in the soils just around piles. Additionally, the factors about soils and piles influencing on the lateral earth pressures are clarified and the high reliability of the equations is proved.
