Background: Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is one of the most distressing side effects for patients undergoing chemotherapy. This study evaluated the protective effect of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) on CIA in a well-established in vitro human hair follicle organ culture model as it occurs in vivo. Methods: We examined whether KRG can prevent premature hair follicle dystrophy in a human hair follicle organ culture model during treatment with a key cyclophosphamide metabolite, 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide (4-HC). Results: 4-HC inhibited human hair growth, induced premature catagen development, and inhibited proliferation and stimulated apoptosis of hair matrix keratinocytes. In addition, 4-HC increased p53 and Bax protein expression and decreased Bcl2 protein expression. Pretreatment with KRG protected against 4-HC-induced hair growth inhibition and premature catagen development. KRG also suppressed 4-HC-induced inhibition of matrix keratinocyte proliferation and stimulation of matrix keratinocyte apoptosis. Moreover, KRG restored 4-HC-induced p53 and Bax/Bcl2 expression. Conclusion: Overall, our results indicate that KRG may protect against 4-HC-induced premature catagen development through modulation of p53 and Bax/Bcl2 expression.

Background Disputes regarding medical malpractice occur between practitioners and patients. As patients have become increasingly aware regarding medical care, an increase in the unexpected side effects of procedures has been observed, thereby leading to an increase in disputes regarding medical malpractice. In this study, we reviewed trends in precedents involving cosmetic surgery-related medical disputes, with the goal of helping to prevent unnecessary disputes in the future. Methods We conducted a search of the judgments made in South Korean courts between 2000 and 2013 that were related to the field of plastic surgery. A total of 54 judgments were analyzed, and the selected precedents were reviewed and classified according to the kind of negligence involved. Results The claim amounts ranged from under 8 million KRW (6,991 USD) to 750 million KRW (629,995 USD). The most common ratio of the judgment amount to the claim amount was 20%-30%. The judgments were classified according to the following categories: violation of the duty of explanation in 17 cases (29%), violation of the duty of care in 10 cases (17%), violation of both duties in 20 cases (35%), and no violation of duty in six cases (10%). Conclusions Cosmetic surgery-related suits require different approaches than general malpractice suits. The Supreme Court requires plastic surgeons to determine the type, timing, methods, and scope of their treatments when considering possible results. Therefore, practitioners should be educated on their rights and responsibilities to enable them to cope with any possible medical dispute that may arise.
The purpose of this study was to verify the efficacy of cosmetics containing peptides as a cosmetic method for eyelashes. The study subjects were 21 women aged 20 years, set as the experimental group (right eyelash) and the control group (left eyelash), and measured changes according to the use of peptide cosmetics for 4 weeks. As a result of the analysis, the change in the length and density of eyelashes showed significant differences in the interaction between the group and the experiment period, and in the main effect according to each experiment period (p<.001). In the change of eyelash density and thickness, it was found that there was a significant difference at week 3 and week 4 in the difference between groups by measurement period (p>.05, p>.01). Cosmetics containing peptides have been effectively proven to be an effective cosmetic method for safe and beautiful eyelashes by increasing the length and number of eyelashes to those who suffer from side effects caused by cosmetic procedures. In the future, we look forward to expanding research to a wide range of age groups.
A study on skin care was conducted in order to develop proper skin care program and disseminate the Information to the consumers. The study was performed from October 2, 1997 though April 30 1997 by using questionnaires. The subjects were 1,793 from lug cities of Seoul, Pusan and, and 800 from medium and small cities of Kyongsan, Kimchon, Mokpo and KimHae cities. All subjects were females over 20 years. 1. 64.3% of the subjects said that they chose the massage packs after considering their skin condition. 55.1% of the subjects said that they did not know the side effects of the massage packs. 2. 53.3% of the subjects reported that they knew the cause of acne. and 73.3% of the respondents reported that they knew the nature of their body classified by oriental medicine. 3. The average knowledge and attitude was 10.61 :t3.46%( who it is converted to percent, it is 53.1%). The upper limit was 18.9% and lower limit was 19.0%. 4. The factors which are under the influence on knowledge of skin care were the times of massage, education level, the height of subjects, disease of skin, age, the degree of fatty body, the hour of make-up(R2=0.137). 5. The factors which are under the influence on the times of massage were education level, the experience of skin side effect, the status of physic8I health and the birth place of the subjects(R2=0.139). 6. The main factors which had significant effect on the status of face skin health were the status of physical health, economic status, age, the side effect of skin cosmetic, and the hour of make-up(R2=0.140). 7. Finally, it is recommended that training package on side effect of cosmetics, massage, physical characteristics and proper way of make-ups, and the public should be educated on the above mentioned areas.
Since, side effects of antibiotics are frequently emphasized these days, their use is gradually diminishing, and alternative drugs are being developed. We have sought to reintroduce them as raw materials for human health as conventional 'weapons' that have been retired after their historical duties. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of lincomycin (LIN), on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Our findings show that LIN potently inhibited production of LPS-induced proinflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), without cytotoxicity. Consistent with these findings, LIN strongly decreased protein expression levels of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX-2). Furthermore, LIN reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β. To further elucidate the mechanisms of these inhibitory effects of LIN, we studied LPS-induced IκB-α degradation, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation. LIN suppressed downregulation of inhibitory κB (IκB-α) degradation, and the phosphorylation of the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway. Based on these results, we suggest that LIN may be considered a potential candidate as an anti-inflammatory cosmetic or a medicine for human health.

The microencapsulation of droplets or particles within a solid shell leads to the formation of core-shell particles. Microencapsulation provides protection and controlled release of core materials such as drugs, vitamins, enzymes, perfumes, and the like. Such particles have, therefore, found a diverse range of applications in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, cosmetic, and food industries. UV absorbers are widely used for cosmetics to screen out ultra violet (UV) rays which have side effects on human skin. The absorbers are made generally from synthetic organic compounds, which can stimulate the human skins to develop allergic phenomena.

Onychomycosis is the most common disease of the nail, with a worldwide prevalence of 5.5%. It causes local pain, paresthesia, and cosmetic problems and decreases the patients' quality of life. Conventional treatments include the administration of topical and systemic agents. However, factors such as subungual hyperkeratosis and biofilm formation may affect the efficacy of these treatments. Moreover, side effects associated with systemic agents are a major concern for patients. Therefore, various novel treatments are being developed; among them, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and Nd:YAG laser are promising, and several studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of PDT and laser therapy. Here, we report the efficacy and tolerability of PDT combined with 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser therapy and topical efinaconazole for the treatment of three patients with refractory onychomycosis.

Facial pores are a visible topographic feature of skin surfaces and are generally the enlarged openings of pilosebaceous follicles. Enlarged facial pores can be a significant cosmetic problem, particularly for women. Recently, gold nanoshell-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) has been reported to be effective in treating recurrent acne. The treatment of enlarged facial pores with gold nanoshell-mediated PTT produced excellent results with no side effects. The two cases reported here demonstrate the possibility of gold nanoshell-mediated PTT as a safe and effective treatment for enlarged facial pores.
Whitening agents derived from natural sources which do not have side effects are sought after. Schizophragma hydrangeoides is an edible plant that grows wild on Jeju Island. We aimed to determine whether S. hydrangeoides extracts show anti-melanogenic activity. Here, we found that 70% ethanol extracts of S. hydrangeoides leaf suppressed α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone-induced melanogenesis in B16F10 mouse melanoma cells. This activity of anti-melanogenesis in B16F10 cells were investigated by determining melanin content and tyrosinase activity, and by performing western blotting. The 70% ethanol extract downregulated tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1. In addition, the n-hexane fraction of S. hydrangeoides leaf (HFSH) exhibited significant anti-melanogenic activity among the various solvent fractions tested without reducing the viability of B16F10 cells. Taken together, these results indicate that extracts from S. hydrangeoides leaf can influence cellular processes via modulation of tyrosinase activity. Hence, S. hydrangeoides can be used as a whitening agent in the cosmetic industry and as a therapeutic agent for treating hyperpigmentation disorders in the clinic.
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the sebaceous gland attached to the hair follicles. Cutibacterium acnes is a major cause of inflammation caused by acne. It is well known that C. acnes secretes a lipolytic enzyme to break down lipids in sebum, and free fatty acids produced at this time accelerate the inflammatory reaction. There are several drugs used to treat acne; however, each one has various side effects. According to previous studies, sulforaphene (SFEN) has several functions associated with lipid metabolism, brain function, and antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, we examined the effects of SFEN on bacterial growth and inflammatory cytokine production induced by C. acnes. The results revealed that SFEN reduced the growth of C. acnes and inhibited proinflammatory cytokines in C. acnes-treated HaCaT keratinocytes through inhibiting NF-κB-related pathways. In addition, SFEN regulated the expression level of IL-1α, a representative pro-inflammatory cytokine expressed in co-cultured HaCaT keratinocytes and THP-1 monocytes induced by C. acnes. In conclusion, SFEN showed antibacterial activity against C. acnes and controlled the inflammatory response on keratinocytes and monocytes. This finding means that SFEN has potential as both a cosmetic material for acne prevention and a pharmaceutical material for acne treatment.
