Biological activities and application of Isodon japonicus H. were investigated. In the physiological activities, the electron donating ability (EDA) was 66.3% in 100 ppm and SOD-like activity was as high as 85.0% in 1,000 ppm with gradual increase. As for the inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase, it was 70.0% in 1,000 ppm and as low as 40.0% in 500 ppm; also, as for the inhibitory effect of tyrosinase, it was as low as 20.5% below 1,000 ppm. The tyrosinase inhibition effect related to skin whitening function showed 30.0% at 1,000 ppm level or below, indicating a relatively low effect. As for the result of measuring the lipid oxidation, all the concentrations of medical ion treatments showed anti-acidification ability; also, as for the metal ion blocking effects against the lipid oxidation promoting factors $(Fe^{2+}\;and\;Cu^{2+})$, $Fe^{2+}$ was better than $Cu^{2+}$ and all concentrations of medical ion treatments was 60.0% in 100 ppm. Also, the clear zone against various bacteria at 0.5 and 1.0 mg/disc was clearly shown. When it was applied into a normal skin-softener, it was safe, showing its potential as a natural material of cosmetics.

Sedum kamtschaticum Fisch., a native plant of Korea, has been used in Korean traditional medicine in the form of water extract for its capacity to improve blood circulation and for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Since previous research suggests that S. kamtschaticum Fisch. has excellent antioxidant and mushroom tyrosinase inhibition activities, in this study, the root and stem parts of S. kamtschaticum Fisch. are extracted in 70% ethanol (SKS, SKR), fractionated with and in order of n-hexane (SSH), ethyl acetate (SSE, SRE), chloroform (SSC, SRC) and water (SSW, SRW) according to the polarity of each solvent, and tested for its applicability as a cosmetic material. According to the total polyphenol, flavonoid contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity of each fraction, the contents and scavenging activity of the root extractions (SKR) were higher than those of the stem extractions (SKS), ethyl acetate fractions (SSE, SRE) being the most effective. In addition, ethyl acetate fractions had the highest tyrosinase inhibition activity and melanin synthesis inhibition activity used on B16F10 melanoma cells, at the concentration of 10 ㎍/mL. HPLC analysis detected a variety of polyphenols including gallic acid and quercetin. This study suggests the potential role of S. kamtschaticum Fisch. as a natural cosmeceutical material.

This study is about the cosmeceutical products using enzyme induced bio-conversion system. In general, ascorbic acid (AA) has the higher reducing activity and can be used for various purpose in the cosmetics. But it is very unstable in the aqueous system and difficult to maintain its stability in the cosmetics product. 2-O-$\alpha$-D-Glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid (AA2G) is the stabilized form of AA and showed the less whitening activity than AA. In this study, we developed bio-conversion system improving the stability and efficacy of AA2G and AA, respectively. In this system, AA2G (over $80\%$) can be converted to AA and glucose within 30 min. The converted product showed higher anti-tyrosinase activity like AA (AA2G showed no anti tyrosinase activity) and depigmenting activity in the artificial tanning test. From these results, we could conclude this system is a brand new method to increase the activity of AA and maintain its stability.
Objectives : The Astragalus membranaceus has been used to diuretic, tonic, anti-viral, anti-oxidant activities in oriental herb medicine, and in each experiment, proved in this effects. Root of A. membranaceus includes according to flavonoid, saponin, polysaccharide, thus it has been studied for anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer activities. In addition, The objective of the present study was to determine the possibility for the application of emulsions in the development of A. membranaceus for cosmetics. Methods : In this study, aimed SOD like activity of A. membranaceus extract, effects of A. membranaceus extract on viscoelastic properties of emulsion was measured using rheometer. Results : In the results, 1, 3-butylene glycol extract of A. membranaceus efficiently reduce the active oxygen, SOD like activity of more than 40% decrement depend on concentration. And A. membranaceus extract increase the modulus of elasticity of emulsion, therefore A. membranaceus extract have not influence on stability loss. As such, the A. membranaceus extracts will remain stable when applied to emulsions or skin products. Conclusions : In consequence of this study, A. membranaceus extract can be effectively used in cosmetic emulsions when the relation between natural product extracts and formulation of cosmetics is elucidated. It is highly recommended that rheology be applied to determine the optimal extract concentration for cosmetic formulations.

To identify the natural and novel cosmeceutical ingredients which have whitening function, we examined the effects of tyrosinase activity and melanin production on halophyte Limonium tetragonum (Thunb.) A. A. Bullock extracts. As a result, the extracts showed whitening effect with no cytotoxicity. Melanin contents of B16F10 melanoma cells were decreased in a dose-dependent manner at 50, 100, $200{\mu}g/mL$ treatment of the extracts. In tyrosinase activity inhibition test, L. tetragonum (Thunb.) A. A. Bullock extracts showed decreased tyrosinase activity as the concentration of ${\alpha}-MSH$ was increased. Furthermore, it was observed that the tyrosinase and MITF expression was significantly downregulated by adding L. tetragonum (Thunb.) A. A. Bullock extracts in ${\alpha}-MSH$, a melanogenesis inducing material, treated B16F10 melanoma cells. These results indicate that L. tetragonum (Thunb.) A. A. Bullock extract might be an effective whitening agent by inhibit melanin formation.

The aim of this study was to show the antioxidant properties of chestnut (Castanea crenata) bur extracts fermented by Lactobacillus casei. The chestnut has been used as a cosmetic material in Korea for many years. This study showed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) were inhibited by the fermentation materials of chestnut bur extracts. The antioxidant activities were analyzed and expressed as EDA, ABTS, reducing power, SOD-like activity, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity, and nitric oxide scavenging ability. The antioxidant activities of fermentation materials from L. casei of chestnut bur extracts were higher than those of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and ascorbic acid (AA). Therefore, we expect that fermentation materials from L. casei of chestnut bur extracts are valuable resources as natural antioxidants and functional cosmetics ingredients.

We conducted this study to investigate anti-inflammatory possibilities of applying cosmetic material about extracts from red ginseng. For this we carried out biological active evaluation about anti-inflammatory by using extracts of red ginseng. In order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of the samples in macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells), MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of red ginseng extracts and the inhibitory activity of nitric oxide production and the expression levels of inflammation-related proteins and genes. The inhibitory activity of nitric oxide in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells was 71.2% at 25 ㎍/ml concentration and western blot analysis showed that the expression of iNOS and COX-2 protein decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. These results suggest that extracts from red ginseng may have value as the potential cosmetic materials.
Whitening effect of the extract of Phaseolus angularis (PA) shell was investigated for its potential application as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect, which is related to whitening, was 76.4% at a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/ml. Cell viability of melanoma cells was measured to test toxicity of the PA shell extract at concentrations showing at least 90% viability. In addition, western blot and RT-PCR assays of the PA shell extract showed concentration-dependent decreases of MITF, TRP-1, TRP-2 and tyrosinase protein and inhibitory effect of mRNA expression. These findings suggested that extract from PA shell has great potential as a cosmeceutical ingredient with whitening effect.
Mume fructus is the roasted fruits of Prunus mume and has been used as traditional chinese medicine. In this study, mume fructus extracts were prepared by three different methods including hot water extract (sample1), fermentation extract using Lactobacillus (Sample2-LP and sample-LA) and ethanol extract (sample3). Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were improved by fermentation process, compared to water extract. Sample 3 showed the highest activity in DPPH radical scavenging. The cytotoxicity of the sample 2-LP was in the range of 83.3% cell viability at $300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ concentration. Mume fructus extracts in a concentration-dependent manner inhibited melanogenesis and NO synthesis was inhibited. Specifically, the extracts fermented by L. plantarum (sample2-LP) showed higher anti-oxidant activity, anti-inflammatory and skin whitening activity than other extracts. It suggests that sample 2-LP could be potentially used as a resource of materials for functional cosmetics.
