Magnesium thin flims were prepared on cold-rolled steel substrates by RF magnetron sputtering technique. The influence of argon gas pressure and substrate bias voltage on their crystal orientation and morphology of the coated films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction, respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of magnesium films on corrosion behaviors was estimated by measuring anodic polarization curves in deaerated 3%NaCl solution. From the experimental results, all the sputtered magnesium films showed obviously good corrosion resistance to compare with 99.99% magnesium target of the sputter-evaporation metal. Finally it was shown that the Corrosion-resistance of magnesium films can be improved greatly by controlling the crystal orientation and morphology with effective use of the plasma sputtering technique.
The internal corrosion of water distribution systems is the main cause for the problem of the public health threat as well as water leakage in the damaged pipeline, red water, and odor and taste of the tap water. This study was examined the effect of chemicals used for pH and alkalinity control and corrosion inhibitors for producing the optimal corrosion control method. Corrosion study at different pH and alkalinity indicated that these control using alkaline chemicals was effective in corrosion rate, Fe release reduction, but examined to be increased in turbidity and corrosion-by-products(TTHMs) problems. The turbidity was slightly increased, requiring caution in controlling corrosion with $Ca(OH)_2$. At pH 9.0, TTHMs concentration is increased two times corn pared with non-control of pH. Using the pipe which had experienced 28 years of exposure, iron release was decreased with the corrosion inhibitor. Consequently, pH, Alkalinity control method using alkaline chemicals must be complemented by corrosion inhibitor application for efficient corrosion control.
The pH & alkalinity adjustment method by lime and carbon dioxide($CO_2$) for corrosion control in water distribution system was investigated to evaluate the corrosion characteristics of metal pipes, such as galvanized iron, copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel. When the pH in sand filtered and ozone+GAC treated water was increased with lime and $CO_2$ from 7.5 to 8.0, the concentration of residual chlorine decreased at higher pH and longer reaction time; the concentration of trihalomethane increased. The corrosion rate of coupons with corrosion control using lime and carbon dioxide was showed much smaller than those without corrosion control using pilot-scale simulated distribution system. The galvanized iron was corroded much faster than carbon steel, copper, and stainless steel. Especially, copper and stainless steel coupons were hardly corroded. The galvanized iron and carbon steel coupons with corrosion control were produced the corrosion products less than those without corrosion control by the results of environmental scanning electron microscope(ESEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDS) analyses. The galvanized iron coupon with pH and alkalinity adjustment by lime and carbon dioxide was detected about 30 percent of zinc, when the carbon steel was detected about 30 percent of calcium by calcium carbonate products formation. For the results of X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses, the goethite(${\alpha}$-FeOOH) was identified as primary corrosion product of galvanized iron without corrosion control, while the Zinc oxide(ZnO) was found on corrosion products of galvanized iron coupon with corrosion control as the results of EDS analyses. However, the carbon steel corrosion products regardless of corrosion control were composed predominantly of maghemite(${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$) and hematite(${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$).
We have investigated the differences between the general corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steels in terms of electrochemical behavior and surface phenomena. Corrosion potential of steels in the absence of SRB (sulfate-reducing bacteria) shifted to a low level and was maintained throughout the experimental period (40 days). The potential in the presence of SRB, however, shifted to a noble level after 20 days' incubation, indicating the growth of SRB biofilms on the test metal specimens and a formation of corrosion products. In addition, the color of medium inoculated with SRB changed from gray to black. The color change appeared to be caused by the formation of pyrites (FeS) as a corrosion product while no significant color change was observed in the medium without SRB inoculation. Moreover, corrosion rates of various steels tested for MIC were higher than those in the absence of SRB. This is probably because SRB were associated with the increasing corrosion rates through increasing cathodic reactions which caused reduction of sulfate to sulfide as well as formation of an oxygen concentration cell. The pitting corrosions were also observed in the SRB-inoculated medium.
This paper presents the importance of corrosion control and protection technology with a real case study of heater tube rupture damaged by High temperature H2S-H2 corrosion in the refinery. The heater was operated at the Hydrocracking unit and the operation temperature and pressure was $340^{\circ}C$ and $18kg/cm^{3}$ respectively. Top side of the convection tube was thinned by high temperature hydrogen sulfide and hydrogen gas as a uniform corrosion and finally ruptured under operation pressure. Damaged area (Convection tube zone) was blocked by protection wall, so it was impossible to inspect with conventional nondestructive examination. Instead the elbow area which is out of the protection wall was inspected regularly to evaluate the corrosion rate of convection tube indirectly. However the operation temperature and the phase of the process stream was different between inside the chamber and outside the chamber. As a result, it caused severe corrosion to the horizontal convection tube inside the chamber comparing to the elbow outside the chamber. Finally convection tube was corroded more rapidly than the elbow and ruptured after 13 years operation. Because of the rupture, the heater was totally burned and the operation was stopped for 3 months until it has been reconstructed. To prevent this kind of corrosion problem and accident, corrosion control should be strengthened and protection technology should be improved.

Most of maritime metallic structures are adopted a CP(Cathodic Protection) System for protection of corrosion in advanced country. So, we had been developed a remote corrosion monitoring control system. And we want to know the characteristics of efficiency, reliability, durability and so on. On the view point of it, we have to test in real field. in terms of design, cathodic protection systems, corrosion monitoring systems and optimal corrosion control systems compare to general commercial products. So, these systems have being studied to improve their capability. In this paper, the result of field testing center design of intelligent cathodic protection system including anodes, a real-time wireless remote corrosion monitoring and corrosion control system are described in naval ports.

This paper focuses on techniques of improving refinery reliability, availability, and profitability. Our team developed a corrosion control document(CCD) for processing of the crude distillation unit(CDU). Recent study shows the loss due to corrosion in US is around $276 billion. It's a big concern for both managers and engineers of refinery industry. The CCD consists of numerous parts namely damage mechanism(DM), design data, critical reliability variable(CRV), guidelines, etc. The first step in the development of CCD is to build material selection diagram(MSD). Damage mechanisms affecting equipments and process need to be chosen carefully based on API 571. The selected nine DM from API 571 are (1) creep/stress rupture, (2) fuel ash corrosion, (3) oxidation, (4) high temperature sulfidation, (5) naphthenic acid corrosion, (6) hydrochloric acid(HCL) corrosion, (7) ammonium chloride(salt) corrosion, (8) wet $H_2S$ corrosion, and (9) ammonia stress corrosion cracking. Each DM related to corrosion of CDU process was selected by design data, P&ID, PFD, corrosion loop, flow of process, equipment's history, and experience. Operating variables affecting severity of DM are selected in initial stage of CRV. We propose the guidelines for reliability of equipments based on CRV. The CCD has been developed on the basis of the corrosion control in refinery industry. It also improves the safety of refinery process and reduces the cost of corrosion greatly.
The typical corrosion prevention method inside the steel upper box girder in a suspension bridge involves the use of paints. However, in an effort to reduce environmental impact and cost, the suspension portion of the Yeongjong Bridge, Korea utilizes dehumidification systems to control humidity and prevent corrosion inside its box girder. Maintaining a uniform humidity distribution at the proper level inside the box girder is critical to the successful corrosion control. In this study, the humidity and the resultant atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder of the Yeongjong Bridge was monitored. The corrosion rate of the steel inside the box girder was obtained using thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) corrosion sensors. Time-of-wetness (TOW) measurements and the deposition rates of atmospheric pollutants such as $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_{x}$ were also obtained. Classification of the atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder was evaluated according to ISO 9223. As a result, no corrosion was found in the upper box girder, indicating that the dehumidification system used in the Yeongjong Bridge is an effective corrosion control method.
Deteriorating soil physical properties and increasing soil pathogens due to the continuous cultivation of field crops are the leading causes of productivity deterioration. Crop rotation, soil heat treatment, and chemical control are used as pest control methods; however, each has limitations in wide application to domestic agriculture. In particular, chemical control requires improvement due to direct exposure to sterilizing solution, odor, and high-intensity work. To improve the overall domestic agricultural environment, the problems of time and cost, such as field maintenance and cultivation scale, must be addressed; therefore, mechanization technology for chemical control must be secured to derive improvement effects in a short period. Most related studies are focused on the control effect of the DMDS (dimethyl disulfide) sterilizer, and research on the performance of the sterilization spray device has been conducted after its introduction in Korea, but research on the corrosion suitability of the material is lacking. This study conducted a corrosion test to secure the corrosion resistance of a soil sterilizer injection pump, and a mechanical failure mode by corrosion by the material was established. The corrosion test comprised operation and neglect tests in which the sterilizing solution was circulated in the pump and remained in the pump, respectively. As a result of the corrosion test, damage occurred due to the weakening of the mechanical strength of the graphite material, and corrosion resistance to aluminum, stainless steel, fluororubber, and PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) materials was confirmed.
In existing systems, the best method inhibiting corrosion control in water distribution systems is to reduce water corrosiveness. Water corrosion can be decreased by controlling water quality through simple water treatment in treatment plants. On this research, we study the characteristics of tab water qualities in domestic areas, assessment of corrosive water quality and the method of water quality monitoring. This review presents the method of water quality monitoring which is the most applicable. Monitoring for corrosion control in waterworks system is the most proper method; It can prevent serious accidents economically and reduce civil appeals. Surely we should assess corrosive water quality in tab water, and introduce water treatment methods to control corrosive water quality before monitoring for corrosion. According to a lot of researches, it has been proved that simple water treatments can reduce the pipe corrosion. In this review we should indicate that we do not control of the corrosive water quality due to domestic conditions, we should monitor the water quality basically. Therefore, we recognize how the existing water quality can cause problems on pipeline corrosion, how to deal with it. Then it will be possible to apply water quality monitoring for corrosion control in water distribution system. Monitoring for corrosion control can be expressed by LI index, it is already known in literatures. This review presents more simple method than existing methods than existing ones we expect to apply these methods to SCADA in the future.
