  • In this paper, evaluation and development of corrosion resistant materials for smokestacks is summarized mainly on the basis of the author's experimental results. Operating environments of smokestacks and the problems of conventional lining materials for smokestacks are described briefly. The emphasis is focused upon the evaluation and development of recently developed corrosion resistant steels such as YUS260 for heavy oil fired smokestacks, WELACC5 for LNG fired smokestacks and NSL310MoCu Clad steel for coal fired smokestacks. Corrosion resistance of these steels under laboratory corrosion testing environments and actual environments are evaluated. Finally future problems of corrosion resistant materials for smokestacks are touched on briefly.

  • High nitrogen-bearing stainless steel (HNS) containing more than Imass% N was successfully created by means of pressurized electro-slag remelting (P-ESR) without the addition of manganese. Excellent localized corrosion resistant properties of the HNS were confirmed in terms of pitting and crevice corrosion in artificial seawater. The repassivation kinetics proved higher repassivation rate for HNS.

  • Any design engineer or coating formulator's primary objective is to protect metals. Large investments in terms of money, time, labour, and other resources are necessary for constructing large-scale machinery and structures. In terms of economy, the structure's lifespan should be as long as feasible to create revenue. It is becoming essential to protect metal substrates from corrosion to prolong the lifespan of such huge structures. One of the most exciting, durable, useful, and effective methods to protect metals from corrosion is the application of corrosion-resistant coating. Graphene is a novel material with a wide range of applications because of its extraordinary features. The use of graphene in coating creates an obstacle and complicates the path for corrosive medium to reach the metal. As the path to the metal elongates, the corrosion medium takes longer to reach the metal. Thus, metal corrosion can be avoided. In this paper, the importance of graphene in coating formulation is discussed, including chemical modifications of graphene, the effect of graphene concentration on corrosion inhibition, and the contact angle of coating. This review also highlights the significance of water-based corrosion-resistant coating for preventing environmental damage.

  • The high temperature corrosion properties of heat resistant steels were investigated in oxidation atmosphere including sulfur dioxide. The heat resistant steels of T22, T92, T122, T347HFG and T304H were evaluated at 620, $670^{\circ}C$ for 400 hours. The corrosion rates showed a decreasing tendency while chrome contents of those steels increased from 2 mass.% to 19 mass.%. The in crease in temperature increasement has an more effect on the corrosion rates of low chrome steels than high chrome steels. The weight gains of T22, T92, T304H at $670^{\circ}C$ were 3.7, 1.65, 1.23 times compared with those at $620^{\circ}C$. The external scale formed on T22 was composed of hematite, magnetite and Fe-Cr spinel and internal layer including iron oxide mixed with sulfide. The scales formed on T92, T122, T304H consisted of an outer layer of hematite and inner layer of chrome oxide and hematite. The proportion of chrome oxide at inner layer was increased when the chrome contents in heat resistant steels were increased.

  • A high temperature resistant coating has been developed, which is mainly for heavy oil production pipes deserved the serious corrosion. The coating has excellent physical and mechanical performance and corrosion resistance at room and high temperature. In order to simulate the underground working condition of heavy oil pipes, the heat resistance of the high temperature resistant coating has been studied. The development and a study on the heat resistance of the DHT high temperature resistance coating have been introduced in this paper.

  • Friction, wear and corrosion characteristics of various MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were investigated to apply them to automotive wheel joints. MoS$_2$ bonded film lubricants were formulated by combinations of several additives and binders, and they were coated onto the pre-treated surfaces of specimens. Friction and wear characteristics were evaluated with Falex pin & vee-block test and LFW-1 block-on-ring test. For the corrosion resistant characteristics of the films, salt solution spray corrosion tests were performed. Results showed that MoS$_2$ bonded films containing both inorganic and organic corrosion-resistant additives yielded a synergy effect on anti-corrosion resistance. Also, binders having the better water-proof and thermal stability showed the lower friction and higher corrosion resistance.

  • The hot corrosion properties of heat-resistant steels were investigated in an oxidation atmosphere including artificial ash and sulfur dioxide. The heat-resistant steels of T22, T92, T122, T347HFG, Super304H and HR3C were evaluated at 620, 670 and $720^{\circ}C$ for 400 hours. The relationship between the corrosion rate and the temperature followed a bell-shaped curve with a peak rate at around $670^{\circ}C$. The corrosion rates showed a decreasing tendency as the chrome contents of these steels increased from 2.15 wt.% to 24.5 wt.%, and austenitic steels had a lower corrosion rate than ferritic steels. Sulfidation by $SO_2$ as well as molten salt corrosion also had an effect on the total corrosion rate, especially showing an increase in the corrosion rate in ferritic steels. Regardless of the chrome content in the steels and irrespective of the test temperature, the corrosion scale was composed of an outer oxide and an artificial ash mixed layer, a middle oxide layer and inner sulfide, and a mixed oxide layer. As the chrome content increased, the proportion of chrome oxide in the corrosion scale increased. Before spalling of the corrosion scale, voids and cracks were initiated in the sulfide and the mixed oxide layer or at the interface with the substrate.

  • When seawater is used in electrochemical devices, issues arise such as the adsorption of chloride ions blocking the active sites for Oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) in seawater batteries, and the occurrence of Chlorine evolution reactions (ClER) in seawater electrolysis due to chloride anions (Cl-) competing with OH- for catalytic active sites, potentially slowing down Oxygen evolution reactions (OER). Consequently, the performance of components used in seawater battery and seawater electrolysis may deteriorate. Therefore, conventional alloys are often used by coating or plating methods to minimize corrosion, albeit at the cost of reducing electrical conductivity. This study thus designed a corrosion-resistant layer by doping carbon with Nitrogen (N) and Sulfur (S) to maintain electrical conductivity while preventing corrosion. Optimal N,S doping ratios were developed, with corrosion experiments confirming that N,S (10:90) carbon exhibited the best corrosion resistance performance.

  • Offshore fields are increasingly important for the development of offshore resources due to the growing energy needs. However, an offshore field for oil and gas production has difficult development conditions, e.g., high temperature, high pressure, sweet/sour compositions of fluids, etc. Corrosion is one of the biggest issues for offshore pipeline engineering. In this study, a Corrosion Resistant Alloy (CRA) pipe for corrosion prevention was investigated through its global demand and trends, and three types of CRA pipelines were introduced with detailed explanations. The usefulness of CRA was also evaluated in comparison to a carbon steel pipeline in terms of the structural strength, cost, and other factors. Offshore pipeline engineering, including mechanical design and verification of the results through an installation analysis based on numerical software, was performed for the carbon steel type and solid CRA type. The results obtained from this study will be useful data for CRA pipeline designers and researchers.
