This paper documents the result of a preliminary analysis on the influence of hull-ice friction coefficient on model resistance and power predictions and their correlation to full-scale measurements. The study is based on previous model-scale/full-scale correlations performed on the National Research Council - Ocean, Coastal, and River Engineering Research Center's (NRC/OCRE-RC) model test data. There are two objectives for the current study: (1) to validate NRC/OCRE-RC's modeling standards in regarding to its practice of specifying a CFC (Correlation Friction Coefficient) of 0.05 for all its ship models; and (2) to develop a correction methodology for its resistance and propulsion predictions when the model is prepared with an ice friction coefficient slightly deviated from the CFC of 0.05. The mean CFC of 0.056 and 0.050 for perfect correlation as computed from the resistance and power analysis, respectively, have justified NRC/OCRE-RC's selection of 0.05 for the CFC of all its models. Furthermore, a procedure for minor friction corrections is developed.
The CMP monitoring system was newly developed by the aid of friction force measurement, resulting from installation of piezoelectric quartz sensor on R&D polisher. The correlation between friction and CMP results was investigated in terms of tribological aspects by using the monitoring system. Various friction signals were monitored and analyzed by the change of experimental conditions such as pressure, velocity, pad and slurry. First of all, the lubrication regimes were classified with Sommerfeld Number through measuring coefficient of friction in ILD CMP. And then, the removal mechanism of abrasives could be understood through the correlation with removal rate and coefficient of friction. Especially, the amount of material removal per unit sliding distance is directly proportional to the friction force. The uniformity of CMP performances was also deteriorated as coefficient of friction increased.
In this work, equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in a microcanonical ensemble are performed to evaluate the friction coefficient of a Brownian particle (BP) in a Lennard-Jones (LJ) solvent. The friction coefficients are determined from the time dependent friction coefficients and the momentum autocorrelation functions of the BP with its infinite mass at various ratios of LJ size parameters of the BP and solvent, ${\sigma}_B/{\sigma}_s$. The determination of the friction coefficients from the decay rates of the momentum autocorrelation functions and from the slopes of the time dependent friction coefficients is difficult due to the fast decay rates of the correlation functions in the momentum-conserved MD simulation and due to the scaling of the slope as 1/N (N: the number of the solvent particle), respectively. On the other hand, the friction coefficient can be determined correctly from the time dependent friction coefficient by measuring the extrapolation of its long time decay to t=0 and also from the decay rate of the momentum autocorrelation function, which is obtained by time integration of the time dependent friction coefficient. It is found that while the friction coefficient increases quadratically with the ratio of ${\sigma}_B/{\sigma}_s$ for all ${\sigma}_B$, for a given ${\sigma}_s$ the friction coefficient increases linearly with ${\sigma}_B$.
The use of carbon materials in mechanical components such as bearings, seals, and bushings that do not require lubricants is increasing rapidly. This paper reports on establishing the optimal condition for resin-bonded carbon materials. We fixed the content ratio of materials, which include graphite powder and diatomite as a lubricant modifier and a friction modifier, respectably, with resin used as a bonding material. We then produced bushings using hot-pressing within the temperature range of resin curing. The properties of bushing, the friction coefficient, wear rate and the mechanical strengths are discussed in relation to the content of respective materials, with correlation of friction coefficient and sliding distance. Finally, we examined the friction coefficient changes according to the applied load on bushing and the friction coefficient changes according to contact speed of bushing.
Notably, laser surface patterning facilitates tribological applications under lubricated sliding contacts. Consequently, a special pattern that can reduce the coefficient of friction under contact is considered necessary for improved machine efficiency. However, inappropriate pattern designs produce higher friction coefficients and cannot reduce friction. In this study, we use cast iron pins as specimens to investigate their friction and wear characteristics. Moreover, we experimentally investigate the correlation between the friction reduction effect and the design of groove crosshatch patterns fabricated with various angles and widths. We conduct a friction test using a pin-on-disc type tribometer under grease lubrication to study the friction reduction effect of the specimens, and we observe that the average coefficient of friction changes with the crosshatch angle and width. The experiment reveals that grooved crosshatch specimens with a crosshatch angle of 135°maximize friction reduction. The coefficient of friction of the groove specimens with a width of 120 ㎛ is lower than that of the specimens with a width of 200?. The friction reduction effect of the width of the groove is attributed to the density of the groove pattern. Thus, grooved crosshatch patterns can be designed to maximize friction reduction, and the friction property of a grooved crosshatch pattern is found to be related to its width and angle.
For a mobile robot that travels along a terrain consisting of various geology, information on tire force and friction coefficient between ground and wheel is an important factor. In order to estimate the lateral force between ground and wheel, a lot of information about the model and the surrounding environment of the vehicle is required in conventional method. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to estimate lateral force through simple model (Minimal Argument Lateral Slip Curve, MALSC) using only minimum data with high estimation accuracy and to improve estimation reliability of the friction coefficient by using the estimated lateral force data. Simulation is carried out to analyze the correlation between the longitudinal and transverse friction coefficients and slip angles to design the simplified lateral force estimation model by analysing simulation data and to apply it to the actual field environment. In order to verify the validity of the equation, estimation results are compared with the conventional method through simulation. Also, the results of the lateral force and friction coefficient estimation are compared from both the conventional method and the proposed model through the actual robot running experiments.
This paper is results of investigating the dominant factors influencing to coefficient of consolidation in horizontal direction of Korean marine clays and their correlations through literature review. From the results of analyzing data obtained from field tests such as piezocone penetration and dilatometer tests as well as laboratory tests, coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction was found to increase with increase of stiffness index of soil while it decreases with the increase of dissipation time of pore pressure developed during field tests. In general, the coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction tends to increase with increase of undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure although correlation between them are relatively low. Friction ratio has a high correlation with coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction in case of friction ratio being greater than 1.0. For methods of estimating coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction with different testing device, values obtained from methods of P2-logt and DMT-A with dilatometer were quite similar to values from piezocone penetration test. Consistency of soil is quite proportional to coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction. Clear correlation between coefficients of consolidation in the horizontal and the vertical directions could not be found. coefficient of consolidation in the horizontal direction estimated from the results of field test tends to be 1.13~3.11 times greater than that obtained from laboratory tests.
This paper investigates the combined effects of parameters such as die surface finish, die directionality of stoning contact pressure and draw speed on the resulting coefficient of friction. Also, this study show the correlation between the NN(Neural Network) and DOE(Design of Experiments) to reduce the number of experiments without the loss of the effects of parameter upon coefficient of friction. The experiments were run in random order with at least three replicates. It was found that the directional stoning orthogonal to the pulling direction is lower friction than directional stoning parallel to the pulling directi on using FCD55 die and SPCEN.
The article presents a theoretical-experimental approach developed for modeling the coefficient of sliding friction in the dynamic system tool-workpiece in slide diamond burnishing of low-alloy unhardened steels. The experimental setup, implemented on conventional lathe, includes a specially designed device, with a straight cantilever beam as body. The beam is simultaneously loaded by bending (from transverse slide friction force) and compression (from longitudinal burnishing force), which is a reason for geometrical nonlinearity. A method, based on the idea of separation of the variables (time and metric) before establishing the differential equation of motion, has been applied for dynamic modeling of the beam elastic curve. Between the longitudinal (burnishing force) and transverse (slide friction force) forces exists a correlation defined by Coulomb's law of sliding friction. On this basis, an analytical relationship between the beam deflection and the sought friction coefficient has been obtained. In order to measure the deflection of the beam, strain gauges connected in a "full bridge" type of circuit are used. A flexible adhesive is selected, which provides an opportunity for dynamic measurements through the constructed measuring system. The signal is proportional to the beam deflection and is fed to the analog input of USB DAQ board, from where the signal enters in a purposely created virtual instrument which is developed by means of Labview. The basic characteristic of the virtual instrument is the ability to record and visualize in a real time the measured deflection. The signal sampling frequency is chosen in accordance with Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. In order to obtain a regression model of the friction coefficient with the participation of the diamond burnishing process parameters, an experimental design with 55 experimental points is synthesized. A regression analysis and analysis of variance have been carried out. The influence of the factors on the friction coefficient is established using sections of the hyper-surface of the friction coefficient model with the hyper-planes.
