The natives of the genus Corbicula have shown worldwide dispersion in recent times, which has caused great ecological and economic impacts on the introduced ecosystems. The species reported from the genus have been consumed as food and explored for medicine with pharmacological activity. Consequently, the demand of Corbicula sp. in the South Korean domestic market has increased and so also it's associated import to the country. However, due to the absence of identification keys of imported Corbicula, the market is facing confronting situations. We hypothesized that the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase I gene (CO-I) based molecular profiling could be a necessary technique for identification of Corbicula sp. in the South Korea domestic market. The genetic analysis identified both Corbicula japonica and Corbicula fluminea from the market foods. C. japonica and C. fluminea are inhabitants in Korea, but C. fluminea production has decreased in Seomjingang river basin. Therefore, C. fluminea identified from this study, is expected to be imported from China and would have a mixed sales in Seomjingang river side basin.
A series of radiotracer studies were conducted to evaluate the influence of water temperature and/or body size on the clearance rates and uptake rates of Cd, Se and Zn in the Asiatic clam, Corbicula fluminea, Asian clam Potamocorbula amurensis and Balthic clam, Macoma balthica. Uptake rates of Cd, Se and Zn were estimated simultaneously with clearance rate of clams under 3 different water temperature conditions (5, 13 and $21^{\circ}C$). The weight specific clearance and metal uptake rates of P. amurensiswere increased with temperature, however, no consistent temperature effect was observed for the other clams. The variation of uptake rates of Cd, Se and Zn along with temperature or body size in each clam species was well associated with clearance rates. The inter-species as well as the intra-species difference of metal uptake rates could be well explained by the variation of clearance rates of clam individuals.
More than 1,500 clams of Corbicula fluminea, the most favorable food source of freshwater bivalves in Korea, were collected from 5 localities to examine cercarial and metacercarial infection with Echinostoma cinetorchis. Although 3 clams infected with suspicious E. cinetorchis metacercariae out of 200 specimens collected at Kangjin, Chollanam-do were detected, no cercarial and metacercarial infections with E. cinetorchis were observed in field-collected Corbicula specimens. In the susceptibility experiments with laboratory-reared clams, those infected with miracidia of E. cinetorchis did not release their cercariae up to 60 days after infection. To confirm the identity of second intermediate host of E. cinetorchis experimentally, a total of 30 clams were exposed to the cercariae from Segmentina hemisphaerula that had been infected with miracidia of E. cinetorchis. The clams were susceptible to cercariae of E. cinetorchis with an infection rate of 93.3%. Metacercariae from clams taken more than 7 days after cercarial exposure were fed to rats (S/D strain), and adult worms of E. cinetorchis, characterized by 37-38 collar spines on the head crown, were recovered from the ileocecal regions. This is the first report of C. fluminea as a possible second intermediate host of E. cinetorchis.
We investigated to understand the differences in the karyotypes and the reproductive characteristics between the diploid clam, Corbicula japonica in the brackish water and the triploid clam, C. fluminea in the freshwater. The number of chromosomes of the diploid C. japonica were 38, which can be grouped into 19 pairs of two homologues. These can be divided into 11 pairs of telocentric, 4 pairs of subtelocentric, 3 pairs of submetacentric and one pair of metacentric chromosomes. C. japonica is oviparous and dioecious. The clam has two pairs of gills, with the inner and outer-demibranchs, however, they do not act mainly as marsupia. External fertilization occurs in the brackish water. The triploid marsh clam, C. fluminea has 54 chromosomes, which can be grouped into 18 sets of three homologues. These 18 sets can be divided into one metacentric group, five submetacentric groups and 12 subtelo- or telocentric groups. C. fluminea is ovoviviparous and functional hermaphrodite. The triploid condition may be closely related to hermaphroditism. This species has the inner-demibranchs acting mainly as marsupia. The depletion of ripe eggs occurred in the inner-demibranchs of the gill during the incubatory periods, and ripe eggs produced in the hermaphroditic follicles in the gonad during the non-incubatory periods. The gonad developmental stages of two marsh clams (C. japonica and C. fluminea) can be divided into five stages: early active stage, late active stage, ripe stage, partially spawned stages, and spent/inactive stage.
A genetic analysis using starch gel electrophoresis was performed to clarify the degrees of genetic differentiation and the phylogenetic relationships among four species of the genus Corbicula (Bivalvia, Corbiculidae). The average genetic similarity coefficients among the populations of each species on C. fluminea, C. leana and C. colorata were very closed (Rogers' S$\geq$0.970), whereas the other C. japonica was separated into two genetic groups (S=0.873) with distinct allelic difference at the Gpl locus. Thuefore additional taxonomic studies are needed on this species. On the other hand, these four species were well distinguished from each other genetically with distinct allelic differences at 4 to 9 loci. The genetic similarity coefficients (S) between C. leana and C. colorata, C. fluminea and C. leana, and C. fluminea and C. colorata were 0.737, 0.689, and 0.594, respectively. In particular, the average genetic similarity coefficients between these three species (inhabiting in freshwater) and the other C. japonica (inhabiting in brackishwater) were notably lower (S=0.370).
An estuary is a water ecosystem with a high abundance of the species diversity, due to a variety of complex physicochemical factors of the area where freshwater and ocean mixed. The identification of Corbicula species in the estuary environments is difficult because of various morphological characteristics. In this study, we provide taxonomic information on Corbicula species with taxonomic difficulties using morphological and genetic analysis. This study was conducted on clams from the Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay, one of the major production area of marsh clam in Korea. As a result, we characterized Cytocrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of the Corbicula. The 636 bp nucleotide sequences of COI have 98% homology among Corbicula species collected from 2 sites of Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay. The phylogenetic analysis with 17 species of Corbicula indicated that most of the species collected from Seomjin River-Gwangyang Bay were brackish water clam (Corbicula japonica), and only one Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea). The evolutionary distance between C. japonica and C. fluminea was less than 0.003. Therefore, it was confirmed that C. japonica is phylogenetically closely related to C. fluminea. In 9 species of Cyrenidae, phylogenetic tree was classified into three lineages. These results will be used as an important data for an identification of clam species by providing genetic information for Corbicula species with a morphological diversity.
Corbicula fluminea, one of the 2 species in the family Corbiculidae living in the Lake Uiam, was used as an experimental material and the embryonic development and the structure of glochidia of this species were investigated. This freshwater mussels was oviparous, but some ovoviviparous: incubated their youngs in the inner-demibranchs or outer-demibranchs, however, chiefly used the inner-demibranchs as brood-pouch. The average time required from a fertilized egg to two-cell stage, veliger stage, and glochidium was 76 minutes, 3 hours, and 17 hours, respectively, The mean size of glochidium was $168{\mu}m$ in shell height, $195{\mu}m$ in shell lengh, $114{\mu}m$ in hinge legth and the form of glochidium was D-type and had no hooks or hooklets for attaching to fish like Unioidae.
Laboratory radiotracer experiments were conducted to determine assimilation efficiencies (AE) from ingested algal food and oxic sediment particles, uptake rates from the dissolved phase, and the efflux rates of Cd, Cr and Zn in the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea. Among three elements, AE from both algal and sediment food was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr. The AEs of tested elements from algal food (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) were consistently higher than those from sediments at a given salinity and temperature. The influence of salinity (0, 4 and 8 psu) and temperature (5, 13 and $21^{\circ}C$) on the metal AEs was not evident for most tested elements, except Cd AEs from sediment. The rate constant of metal uptake from the dissolved phase $(k_u)$ was greatest for Cd, followed by Zn and Cr in freshwater media. However, in saline water, the $(k_u)$ of Zn were greater than those of Cd. The influx rate of all tested metals increased with temperature. The efflux rate constant was greatest for Cr $(0.02\;d^{-1})$, followed by Zn $(0.010{\sim}0.017\;d^{-1})$ and $Cd\;(0.006\;d^{-1})$. The efflux rate constant for Zn in clam tissues depurated in 0 psu $(0.017\;d^{-1})$ was faster than that in 8 psu $(0.010\;d^{-1})$. Overall results showed that the variation of salinity and temperature in estuarine systems can considerably influence the metal bioaccumulation potential in the estuarine clam C. fluminea. The relatively high Cd accumulation capacity of C. fluminea characterized by the high AE, high dissolved influx rate and low efflux rate, suggested that this clam species can be used as an efficient biomonitor for the Cd contamination in freshwater and estuarine environments.

Corbicula fluminea Muller 1884 is the commonest freshwater bivalve in Asian countri including Korea. This clam is easily found in the freshwater systems, and edible as a food source in Korea. This study was aimed to confirm natural infection of C. fluminea collected from various localities with Echinostoma cinetorchis, an important hum intestinal fluke in Korea. (omitted)
This study was undertaken with the intent to describe the influence of water temperature and food concentration on the filtration rates of the Asiatic clam, Corbicula fluminea. The clams were collected at Lake Geumho near Yeongsan river, during March 2001. Food organism, Scenedesmus sp. (KMCC FC-34), was indoor-cultured in f/2 medium, and was used to measure the filtration rate of the clams. Filtration rate of the clams was measured by indirect method. Cell concentrations of food organisms were determined by direct counting cells using the hemacytometer under the light microscope. The filtration rate of the clams increased with water temperature up to circa $25^{\circ}C$. Above this temperature, the filtration rate decreased rapidly. The minimal filtration rate of the clams was recorded at $5^{\circ}C$. Thermal coefficient, $Q_10$ values at low temperature range were much higher than those at high temperature range. These results indicate the asiatic clam is more sensitive in cold water like most of marine bivalves. There was a strong reversed correlation between filtration rate and food concentration. Filtration rate of the clams was reduced as food concentration was increased.
