A Study on the harmful trace elements in food (야채중에 함유된 유해 미량금속에 관한 연구)

  • In order to investigate the harmful trace elements in Korean common vegetable, the contents of Lead, Cadmium, Copper, Zinc and Manganese are studied in this paper. As shown in the Table 1, the following vegetable samples collected from the agriculture-marine products market I Seoul were used; root vegetables-potato, sweet potato, carrot, radish, onion and garlic, fruit vegetables-cucumber, pumpkin, green pepper, egg plant, tomato and melon. The contents of the harmful trace elements were determinded by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These elements were extracted from the vegetables with the DDTC-MIBK extraction method. The results were as follows; 1. The average contents of the harmful trace elements in the vegetables were as follows; Root vegetables-Lead, 0.387 ppm; Cadmium, 0.030 ppm; Copper, 1.267 ppm; Zinc, 7.395 ppm; Manganese, 5.380 ppm. Fruit vegetables-Lead, 0.259 ppm; Cadmium, 0.028 ppm; Copper, 1.155 ppm; Zinc, 3.732 ppm; Manganese, 3.532 ppm. 2. The contents of harmful trace elements in vegetables were significantly low compared with foreign standards. This means that vegetables contamination with those harmful trace elements is not significant at present.

  • Nano-sized $TiB_2$ was in situ synthesized in copper matrix through self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with high-energy ball milled Ti-B-Cu elemental mixtures as powder precursors. The size of $TiB_2$ particles in the product of SHS reaction decreases with time of preliminary mechanical treatment ranging from 1 in untreated mixture to 0.1 in mixtures milled for 3 min. Subsequent mechanical treatment of the product of SHS reaction allowed the $TiB_2$ particles to be reduced down to 30-50 nm. Microstructural change of $TiB_2$-Cu nanocomposite during spark plasma sintering (SPS) was also investigated. Under simultaneous action of pressure, temperature and electric current, titanium diboride nanoparticles distributed in copper matrix move, agglomerate and form a interpenetrating phase composite with a fine-grained skeleton.

Effect of feeding mixed microbial culture fortified with trace minerals on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, nitrogen and trace mineral balance in Sheep

  • Background: The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of feeding trace mineralsfortified mixed microbial culture (TMC) on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, blood electrolyte status, nitrogen balance, and trace mineral balance in sheep. Methods: Mixed microbes [0.6 % (v/w) of Enterobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Lactobacillus sp., and Saccharomyces sp.] were cultured with 99 % feedstuffs and 0.4 % trace minerals including zinc and copper for ensiling. Six sheep (a mean body weight of $46.5{\pm}1.2kg$) were fed two diets: a control diet (concentrate mix and rye straw) and an experimental diet (a control diet + 3.1 % TMC). Results: TMC feeding did not induce negative effects on ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, blood electrolytes, and nitrogen balance in sheep. Feeding with TMC increased the intake of trace minerals (p < 0.05) and did not affect absorption of trace minerals in the whole digestive tract. Feeding with TMC increased fecal excretion and absorbable intake, and retention of zinc and copper (p < 0.05) by 71 % and 77 %, respectively. Conclusion: Feeding with TMC resulted in higher zinc and copper bioavailability and retention without any adverse effects on sheep performance.

  • It is well known that the metallo- phthalocyanine (MPcs) are sensitive to toxic gaseous molecules such as $NO_2$ and also chemically and thermally stable, Therefore, lots of MPcs have been studied for the potential chemical sensor for $NO_2$ gas using quartz crystal microbalance(QCM) or electrical conductivity. In this study, ultra-thin films of octa(2-ethylhexyloxy)copper-phthalocyanine were prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett method and characterized by using UV-VIS absortion spectroscopy and ellipsometry. Transfer condition, and characterization of LB films were investigated and preliminary results of current-voltage(I-V) characteristics of these films exposed to $NO_2$ gas as a function of film thickness and temperature were discussed.

Studies on the complex compounds and their analytical methods of barbiturates by means of $\alpha$-picoline-copper (II) ($\alpha$-picoline동(II)에 의한 barbital 류의 착화합물및 그의 약품분석화학적 연구)

  • A new method of qualitative and quantitative determination of barbiturates in the pharmaceuticals by means of $\alpha$-picoline-copper (II) was studied. Barbiturates in the pharmaceuticals were dissolved in the mixed solvent of 33% $\alpha$-picoline-Carbontetrachloride to yield Complex Compounds of barbiturates-copper (II)-$\alpha$-picoline. Complex Compounds of barbiturates show uniformly maximum absorption at the wavelength of 540m.mu. and wre to be identified at the concentration of 1 X 10$^{-4}$ Mole, and also was to be quantitatively determined at the concentration of 1 X 10$^{-3}$ Mole. By this method barbiturates in the pharmaceuticals could be determined in the presence of various compounds such as sulpyrine, isopropylantipyrine, antipyrine, phenacetin and etc. But Barbiturates could be also determined by this method after seperation with aminopyrine, acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid and etc. by column chromatography. And barbiturates and acetylsalicylic acid could be also determined by simultaneous equation while their complex compounds show uniformly each maximum absorption at the Wavelength of 540 m${\mu}$ and 620 m${\mu}$. I.R. spectra of these complex compounds show identification of Barbiturates derivatives. The composition ratio of these complex compounds were : barbiturates : Cu : ${\alpha}$-picoline=2:1:2.

Copper Phthalocyanine Field-effect Transistor Analysis using an Maxwell-wagner Model

  • Organic field-effect transistor (FET) based on a copper Phthalocyanine (CuPc) material as an active layer and a $SiO_2$ as a gate insulator were fabricated and analyzed. We measured the typical FET characteristics of CuPc in air. The electrical characteristics of the CuPc FET device were analyzed by a Maxwell-Wagner model. The Maxwell-Wagner model employed in analyzing double-layer dielectric system was helpful to explain the C-V and I-V characteristics of the FET device. In order to further clarity the channel formation of the CuPc FET, optical second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement was also employed. Interestingly, SHG modulation was not observed for the CuPc FET. This result indicates that the accumulation of charge from bulk CuPc makes a significant contribution.

  • The $NO_2$ GAS Sensitivity characteristic of CuTBP(Copper-tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine) LB films were investigated through a study of current-voltage (I-V) characteristics with a variation of number of electrode finger pairs N ($1{\sim}25$). A concentration of 200ppm $NO_2$ gas was used. It was found that a conductance G increases monotonically as the number of interdigital electrode increases, and a Sensitivity, Reproducibility is stable. As far as a current is concerned, the current when N=25 is greater than that when N=1 by 70 or so. It indicates that the number of interdigital electrodes affects the current, sensitivity and stability. We knew that the $NO_2$ gas detector application possibility using a current of N=25.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Copper Chelates in the Form of Methionine, Chitosan and Yeast in Laying Hens

  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of copper chelates in the form of methionine, chitosan and yeast on the performance of laying hens. Four hundred ISA Brown layers, 84 wks old, were assigned to 4 treatments: control, 100 ppm Cu in methionine chelate (Met-Cu), 100 ppm Cu as chitosan chelate (Chitosan-Cu) and 100 ppm Cu as yeast chelate (Yeast-Cu). Each treatment had five replicates of 20 hens. Hen-day and hen-housed egg production and egg weight were significantly (p<0.05) increased by Met-Cu supplementation. The increase by Chitosan-Cu and Yeast-Cu supplementation was not significant. Contrast of the control vs. Cu chelates showed egg weight was significantly (p<0.05) increased by Cu chelate supplementation. Soft-shell egg production was significantly (p<0.05) reduced by supplementation of Cu chelates. Met-Cu treatment showed the lowest incidence of soft egg production. Gizzard erosion index was increased by Cu chelate supplementation. Crude fat in liver, total cholesterol in yolk and Cu content in liver and yolk were not significantly influenced by Cu chelate supplementation. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of 100 ppm Cu as Met-Cu significantly increased egg production and egg weight. Cu-Met chelate was also effective in reducing soft-shell egg production but increased gizzard erosion index.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of Leonuri Herba extract on the treatment of chromaticity and colorfastness. Leonuri Herba has been used as a Korean medicine for the treatment of woman disease. In the long history of Korea, dyeing has been applied for a means representing the grace of natural and inner esthetic consciousness of man. Vegetable dyes give us such great benefits, diversified color, but no pollution. And ramie fabric has distinctive features such as beautiful brilliance, elegance, and strong durability. So, it is regarded as a special product of Korea traditionally. These studies were carried out to treat with acetate iron, dichloride copper and alum with a mordant to ramie fabric. The ramie fabric was died with Leonuri Herba extract. The results of experiment showed as follows: First, the chromophoric degree was the highest in acetate iron but not distinction in another mordants. Seocond, the light colorfastness was the highest in non treated and dichloride copper, but alum was the lowest. Third, the discoloration was alum and dichloride copper showed first grade in washing colorfastness. Abrasion colorfastness was not significant in this test. According the previous results, Leonuri Herba has an efficiency on woman disease. So it is considered that Leonuri Herba can be applied effectively to a theraphy of climacteric disturbance.

Ice Making Characteristics According to Changing Shape of Ice Making Tube (제빙관의 형태변화에 따른 제빙특성)

  • Ice accumulating system patterned ice-an-coil is the way of refrigerating regenerative materials on the surface of copper-tube inserted into the inside of ice-storage. The study experimented to understand ice-an-coil type ice making characteristics according to changing shape of ice making tube. The experiment were carried out under various conditions, that used brine temperature($-l0^{\circ}C$, $-6^{\circ}C$) brine flow rate(l.0m/s, 1.8m/s) and inlet water temperature($6^{\circ}C$, $12^{\circ}C$) etc. Mass of ice per making area increased according to the decrease of the brine temperature and inlet water temperature, but that was increased according to the increase of the brine flow rate. And I set up two hypotheses and compared the capacity of ice-making of the two cases; each had the same thermal area and one had an round-shaped copper tube but the other had an oval-shaped copper tube.
