The effect of ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- and ${\gamma}$-picolines on the stereochemistry of the coordination compounds of lanthanide(III) nitrates derived from 4[N-(furfural)amino]antipyrine semicarbazone (FFAAPS) has been studied. The general composition of the present coordination compounds is [Ln(FFAAPS)$(NO_3)_3$Pic] (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy or Ho and Pic=${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- or ${\gamma}$-picolines). All these coordination compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weight, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, infrared and electronic spectra. The infrared studies suggest that the FFAAPS behaves as a neutral tridentate ligand with N, N, O donor while ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$- or ${\gamma}$-picoline is coordinated to the lanthanide(III) ions via heterocyclic N-atom. Nitrates are bicovalently bonded in these compounds. From the electronic spectral data, nephelauxetic effect (${\beta}$), covalence factor ($b^{1/2}$), Sinha parameter (${\delta}%$) and the covalence angular overlap parameter (${\eta}$) have been calculated. Thermal stabilities of these complexes have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The coordination number of lanthanide(III) ions in the present compound is found to be ten. The antibacterial studies screening of the primary ligand FFAAPS and the complexes showed that the present complexes have moderate antibacterial activities.

The consumption of fresh vegetables has been related to recurrent outbreaks of foodborne diseases (FBD) worldwide. Therefore, the development of effective alternative technologies is necessary to improve the safety of these products. This study aimed to isolate and identify epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from fresh fruits and leafy vegetables and characterize their antagonistic capacity due to their ability to produce bacteriocins or antibacterial compounds. For this, 92 LAB isolates from fruits and leafy vegetables were screened for antagonistic activity. Two strains with the highest and broadest antagonistic activities were selected for further characterization; one from cantaloupe melon (strain CM175) and one from cilantro leaves (strain C15). The cell-free supernatants (CFS) of CM175 and C15 were found to exhibit antagonistic activity against FBD-causing pathogens. The CM175 and C15 strains were identified as Pediococcus pentosaceus and Lactobacillus graminis, respectively. Notably, the P. pentosaceus CM175 CFS stopped the growth of Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Saintpaul, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes, and delayed Escherichia coli O157:H7 growth. Moreover, L. graminis C15 CFS delayed the growth of all indicator pathogens, but did not completely stop it. Organic acids and bacteriocin-like molecules were determined to be possibly exerting the observed antagonistic activity of the identified LAB strains. Thus, application of the antagonistic compounds produced by Pediococcus pentosaceus and Lactobacillus graminis could be a novel and ecological strategy in developing antimicrobial biopreservatives for the food industry and mitigating FBD by reducing the biological contamination in fruit and vegetable orchards, mainly via their potential in controlling both gram-negative and gram-positive pathogenic bacteria.
The dipole moments for some coordination compounds with organic ligands have been calculated adopting the molecuar orbitals obtained from EHT calculation with modified technique. Adopting the molecular orbitals with the modified technique, the calculated dipole moments for all the coordination compounds with organic ligands give closer agreements with experimental values than those using the molecular orbitals obtained from EHT calculation. The calculated dipole moments suggest that $(C_2H_5)_2SO,\;(C_6H_5)_2SO,\;and\;(C_6H_5)_2SeO$ may have a trigonal planar structure and $(C_6H_5)_3AsO,\;and\;(C_6H_5)_3PBCl_3$ a square planar structure and $(C_2H_5)_2OZrCl_4$ may be distorted markedly. This work may also indicate that the modified technique is superior to the EHT calculation as far as the dipole moment calculation is concerned.
Two novel coordination compounds $[Cu_2(pypya)_3(H_2O)_2]{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}(H_2O)_5$ (1) and $\{[Cd(pypya)(ta)_{1/2}]{\cdot}H_2O\}_n$ (2) (Hpypya=2-(3-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)acetic acid, $H_2ta$=terephthalic acid) were synthesized and characterized by single X-ray diffraction. Structure determination reveals that complex 1 and complex 2 crystallize in the triclinic system, with the P-1 space group. The asymmetric unit of 1 contains two Cu(II) ions, and their coordination modes are different. These units of complex 1 are linked together via hydrogen bonds and ${\pi}-{\pi}$ interactions, and the 3D structure of complex 1 was formed. Complex 2, a mononuclear Cd(II) coordination compound, has a 2D structure which was constructed via coordination bonds. TGA and fluorescence spectra analysis of complex 1 and complex 2 have also been studied. In addition, the geometry parameters of complex 1 have been optimized with the B3LYP method of density functional theory (DFT) to explain its coordination behavior. The electronic properties of the complex 1 and ligand Hpypya have been investigated based on the nature bond orbital (NBO) analysis at the B3LYP level of theory. The result verifies that the synergistic effect have occurred in the compound.
The synthesis and characterization of the mononuclear group 13 heterocyclic carboxaldehyde methyldithiocarbazate complexes Me2M[NC5H4CRNNC(S)SCH3] (M=Al, R=H(1); M=Ga, R=H(2); M=Al, R=CH3(3); M-Ga, R=CH3(4); M=In, R=CH3(5)) are described. Compounds 1-5 were prepared by the reaction of MMe3 (M=Al, Ga, In) with 2-formy or 2-acetylpyridine-S-methyldithiocarbazate in toluene. These compounds 1-5 have been characterized by microanalysis, NMR (1H, 13C) spectroscopy, mass spectra, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses reveal that 4-5 are mononuclear metal compounds with coordination number of 5 and N,N,S coordination mode.
Cisplatin is often effective in cancer treatment, but its clinical use is limited because of its nephrotoxicity. We have synthesized new platinum(II) coordination complexes (PC-1 & PC-2) containing trans-${\iota}$ and cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (DACH) as carrier ligands and L-3 -phenyllactic acid (PLA) as a leaving group with the aim of reducing nephrotoxicity but maintaining its anticancer activity. In this study, new platinum(II) complex compounds were evaluated for selective cytotoxicity on cancer cell-lines and normal kidney cells. The new platinum complexes have demonstrated high efficacy in the cytotoxicity against human bladder carcinoma cell-lines (T-24/HT-1376). The cytotoxicity of these compounds against rabbit proximal renal tubular cells and human renal cortical tissues, was determined by MTT assay, the [3H]-thymidine uptake and glucose consumption test, and found to be quite less than those of cisplatin. Based on our results, these novel platinum compounds appear to be valuable lead compounds with high efficacy and low nephrotoxicity.
Five Cu(II) compounds were obtained from different copper salts with btp ligands, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. The structure of coordination polymer 2 contains btp-bridged tetranuclear Cu(II) units weakly connected by nitrate ions, and the structure of a discrete Cu(II) molecule 1 contains acetates and btp ligands. With perchlorate anions, two btp ligands bridge Cu(II) ions to form a double zigzag chain 3, while a single zigzag chain 4 is created with sulfate anions. The reaction of $Cu(NO_{3})_{2}$ containing $NH_{4}PF_{6}$ with btp ligands also produced a polymeric compound 5 containing $Cu(H_{2}O)_{2}^{2+}$ and $Cu(NO_{3})_{2}$ units alternatively bridged by btp ligands with H-bonds between copper bonded water and nitrate oxygen atoms. Five Zn(II) compounds were obtained from different zinc salts with btp ligands, and the structures of polymeric compounds (6, 7 and 8) and monomeric compounds (9 and 10) were determined by X-ray crystallography. With nitrate, chloride and bromide anions, btp ligands bridge Zn(II) ions to form polymeric compounds (6, 7 and 8), but btp ligands coordinate to a Zn(II) ion to form monomeric complexes (9 and 10) with $PF_{6}^{-}$ and perchlorate anions. Four silver salts and btp ligands produced two kinds of structures, dinuclear 20-membered rings and one-dimensional zigzag chain depending on different anions. For $ClO_{4}^{-}$ and OTf anions, weak interactions between Ag(I) and anions make dinuclear 20-membered rings construct polymeric compounds (11 and 13). For $PF_{6}^{-}$ anion, there are also weak interactions between Ag(I) and $F(PF_{6}^{-})(12)$, but they do not construct a polymeric compound. For $O_{2}CCF_{3}^{-}$ anion, btp ligands bridge Ag(I) atoms to make one-dimensional zigzag chain (14), and there are also interactions between Ag(I) and anions.
Novel mononuclear group 13 metal complexes with the formula (R2M){NC5H4C(CH3)NNC(S)NH(C6H5)} (M=Al, R=iC4H9 (1); M=Ga, R=iC4H9 (2); M=Al, R=CH2SiMe3 (3); M=Ga, R=CH2SiMe3 (4)) result when 2-acetyl pyridine 4-phenyl-thiosemicarbazone ligand is mixed with trialkyl aluminum or trialkylgallium. These compounds 1-4 are characterized by microanalysis, NMR (1H, 13C) spectroscopy, mass spectra, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that 1 is mononuclear metal compound with coordination number of 5 and N, N, S-coordination mode.
The reaction of Co2(CO)8 with 3,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone in the presence of the respective 4,4'-chalcogenobispyridine results in the coordination polymers of [CoⅢ(4,4'-X(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n (X=S, Se, Te; Py=pyridine; DBSQ=3,6-di-tert-butylsemiquinone; DBCat=3,6-di-tert-butylcatechol). The title compounds undergo an intramolecular Cat → Co electron transfer, and thus change toward the [CoⅡ(4,4'-X(Py)2)(DBSQ)2]n at elevated temperature. The temperature-switching properties of the compounds directly depend upon the electronegativity of the chalcogen atom of the 4,4'-chalcogenobispyridine coligands. The spectroscopic data disclose that the properties of [CoⅢ(4,4'-S(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n and [CoⅢ(4,4'-Se(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n are similar each other in contrast to those of [CoⅢ(4,4'-Te(Py)2)(DBSQ)(DBCat)]n.
Five new lanthanide coordination polymers, $[Ln_2(1,4-NDC)_2(1,4-HNDC)_2(phen)_2]_n$ (Ln = Er (1), Yb (2)), and $[Ln_2(1,4-NDC)_3(phen)_2(H_2O)_2]_n$ (Ln = Nd (3), Gd (4), Er (5)) ($1,4-H_2NDC$ = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), have been successfully prepared via the reaction of corresponding trivalent lanthanide salt, $1,4-H_2NDC$ and phen in the presence of NaOH and pyridine under hydrothermal condition. Pyridine plays a key role in the synthesis of these lanthanide coordination polymers. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that compounds 1-5 all form a 2-D network while different salt anions result in the diversity of crystal structures. These lanthanide coordination polymers showed a considerable thermal stability in TGA analyses.
