  • The paper is aiming at a critical review of some important aspects of library cooperation in cataloging. It examines the developments of cooperation in cataloging in brief, attempts a detailed account of centralized and cooperative cataloging by bringing out the strengths and weaknesses of each, and reviews important cooperative projects in cataloging as they have been carried out on regional, national and international levels. Examination is made of such cooperative ventures as technical service centers, a variety of Library of Congress programs designed to ease the burden of cataloging for libraries, and the shared cataloging part of the National Program for Acquisition and Cataloging.

  • This paper reviews various aspects of authouity control system and presents prerequistes for an effective authority control in our future cooperative cataloging. It can be summarized as follows. First, numerous factors affecting authority control must be analyzed and consistent procedures and policies on the authority control have to be established. Second, to make an effective bibiographic data base there must be a standard for the information processing and a systematic organization for information sharing and communicating. Third, for this objective we have to build a MARC format, establish a network for the exchange of automatic authority records among systems, standardize the transcription of multscripts, and establish a centralized automatic authority system for a consistent maintenance of authorityrecords of the union data base. Fourth, it would be one of the best way of achieving cooperative cataloging to set up such a nation-wide authority control system as the NACO in Japan.

  • This study aims to identify the recent trends and intellectual structure of international research in the field of catalog, which is undergoing a major change due to the enactment of new standards and rules and the anticipated future. For this purpose, we collected 680 articles published in the 14 years since 2010 and analyzed 1,942 author keywords extracted from them after preprocessing. The main findings of the analysis are as follows First, overseas cataloging research has seen notable growth since 2017. Second, the most frequent research topics were: cataloging, metadata, RDA, university libraries, authority control, linked data, FRBR, catalog, LCSH, libraries, andonline cataloging. Third, the research themes were divided into two clusters, one related to the traditional aspects of library cataloging and the other related to the more recently discussed topics of authority control, cooperative cataloging, RDA, and linked data, which were further subdivided into 14 subclusters. Fourth, we looked at the growth index and standard performance index of the 14 keyword clusters and found that all but one cluster showed growth in terms of discipline growth. This study is significant in that it can be used as a basis for predicting the future development of inventories for Korean academia and the field and for related education.

  • This study aims to present a revised draft of KORMARC bibliographic format that was first revised in 2014. To this end, data collection and analysis methods are as follows. First, the opinions of cataloging working groups for revision of KORMARC including the National Library of Korea (NLK) and KERIS were collected and analyzed. Second, work guidelines used in libraries or cooperative catalog systems were analyzed. Third, by comparing MARC21 update No.32 (June 2021) with the KORMARC bibliographic format, elements that need to be reflected in the KORMARC revision were derived. Finally, issues that have been raised in previous studies or that require further discussion were examined. Based on these analysis results, an outlines of the extension and deletion of KORMARC fields, subfields, and indicators, and supplementation of application guidelines and examples were derived. The final revision directions were finalized after collecting expert opinions, the working group reviews, and comprehensive opinions from the library community.

  • The necessity of computerizing the Central National Library of Korea has been widely recognized. The purpose of this research is to develop Korean Machine Readable Cataloging system as a first step toward an integrated library system and suggests the ways of utilizing the MARC file in Korean libraries as well as in the Central National Library. In this paper the following studies are included: 1. An analysis of the functions and current procedures of the Central National Library 2. Development of a standard record format for KOR MARC 3. Production and utilization of KOR MARC files 4. Identification of problems in developing KOR MARC system In conclusion, the following recommendations are made: 1. Standardization of the internal code and input/output equipments should be proceded for hangul and chinese data processing. 2. The libraries planning or having accomplished computerization process should be cooperative in standardizing and distributing bibliographic data bases including KOR MARC tapes. 3. Training of competent librarians and strong support from the government are required for a successful implementation of the Library's computerization project.
