Most of the thirteen substations in operation in the metropolitan area were installed around the year 2000, and since water cooling methods are used to directly withdraw heat from transformer oils, a stable supply of electric power is required through optimal maintenance of facilities. The water cooling tower installed outdoors, which uses the water supply as sprinkler water, experiences the most problems. Since more than 90% of the cooling water is reused, the dissolved composition in the water becomes concentrated due to long operating hours, and impurities dissolve in the water due to air flowing in from the outside, forming hard scales on the outer surface of the cooling tube, and in extreme cases, reacting with the tube material composition, leading to corrosion. As a result, not only is cooling efficiency lowered, but in extreme cases the cooling tube must be replaced. In this study, the characteristics and composition of the scales formed on the cooling tube were analyzed and corrosion characteristics of material types were identified in order to find an efficient maintenance method for cooling tubes. In addition, the degree of dissolution of various chemicals were investigated during the removal of scales that have been formed.

The component cooling water heat exchangers are critical components in a nuclear power plant. As the operation years of the heat exchanger go by, the maintenance costs required for continuous operation also increase. Most heat exchangers have carbon steel shells, tube support plates and flow baffles. The titanium tube is susceptible to flow induced vibration. The damage on carbon steel tube support rod and titanium tube around cooling water entrance area is inevitable. Therefore, analysis of internal flow around the component cooling water entrance and tube channel is a good opportunity to seek for failure prevention practice and maintenance method. The numerical study was carried out by FLUENT code to find out the causes of tube failure and its location.

The cooling heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a brazing type small diameter tube was investigated experimentally. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a $CO_2$ compressor, a mass flow meter, an evaporator and a brazing type small diameter tube as a test section. The mass flux of $CO_2$ is $400{\sim}1600$ [kg/$m^2s$], the mass flowrate of coolant were varied from 0.15 to 0.3 [kg/s], and the cooling pressure of gas cooler were from 8 to 10 [MPa]. The cooling heat transfer coefficients of the brazing type small diameter copper tube is about $4{\sim}11.7%$ higher than that of the conventional type small diameter copper tube. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the cooling heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a brazing type small diameter copper tube. therefore, it is necessary to develope reliable and accurate predictions determining the cooling heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a brazing type small diameter copper tube.

The jet impingement cooling characteristics are investigated experimentally. The study is motivated by the potential application of local hot spot cooling by means of the vortex tube. The purposes of this research are to examine the effect of the nozzle-block spacing and flow rate. The results of jet through vortex tube is compared with ones of circular Jet. Flow visualization by the smoke-wire technique is also performed to investigate the flow structure. As the nozzle-block spacing is increased and flow rate decreased, the cooling effect of the Jet through the vortex tube decreases mere remarkably than that of the circular jet. So the cooling effect for the jet through the vortex tube is higher than that for the circular jet at $H/D{\leq}3$, $Q{\geq}10m^3/h$.
There is a chilled ceiling panel which carries out the air conditioning by radiation and convection between the room and cold ceiling panel surface. In order to verify heat transfer characteristics between them in cooling system with radiant chilled ceiling panel, analytical and experimental studies were performed for various design and operating parameters such as tube space and diameter, inlet water temperature, mass flow rate, cooling load, and so on. In this study, we found that the tube space and inlet water temperature were more important elements than the tube diameter and water flow rate for the performance of radiant chilled ceiling panel. The cooling capacity of the radiant chilled ceiling panel had the maximum value of $65W/m^{2}$ because the highest cooling capacity was limited by the condensation on the panel surface. The results of comparison between numerical analysis and experiment showed a resonable agreement qualitatively, especially for low cooling capacity.
An experimental study was carried out to improve the cooling capacity and performance of the pulse tube refrigerator. Three buffer pulse tube refrigerator was designed and fabricated, and the experimental apparatus operating process of the therr buffer pulse tube refrigerator and results obtained with the performance test. The cooldown characteristics and load characteristics are described. The lowest temperature measured in the three buffer pulse tube refrigerator was 88K and the cooling capacity at the optimum operating condition was 27 W at 120K.
A study on the engineering design and numerical thermo-hydraulic analysis for KSTAR TF coil structure cooling system has been conducted. The numerical analyses have been done to verify the engineering design of cooling using the commercial code, FLUENT and in-house code for calculating helium properties which varies with cooling tube's heat transfer. Through the engineering design process based on the steady heat balance concepts, the circular stainless steel tube with inner diameter of 4 mm for TF coil has been selected as cooling tube. From normal operation mode analysis results, total 28 cooling tubes were finally chosen. Also, three dimensional cool down analysis for TF coil with designed cooling tube was satisfied with next three design criteria. First is cooling work termination within a month, second is maximum temperature difference within 50 K in TF coil structure and third is exit helium pressure above 2 bar. Consequently, these cool down scenario results can afford to adopt as operating scenario data when KSTAR facilities operate.

The phenomena of energy separation in vortex tubes was investigated experimentally to see the subsidiary effect of the conductivity of tube material and cooling conditions around the outer surface of the tube. The experiment was carried out with pyrex, stainless steel and copper tubes, and the heat transfer conditions of the tubes were with insulation, without in-sulation and water cooling modes respectively The results were obtained that the hot exit fluid temperature was highly affected by a change of conductivity of a tube when the outer surface was cooled by the water, while the working fluid through the tubes was air. How-ever, the cold exit temperature was little affected by the heat transfer modes on the outer surface of the vortex tube.
At present, many countries are trying to reduce green gas emissions to mitigate the effects of these gases on climate change. Year after year, there have been efforts to cut energy use for heating and cooling. Heating and cooling systems, common in all forms of housing, are increasing due to the constant supply of new housing resulting from improvements in economic growth and the quality of life. Thus, studies related to the design of cooling and heating systems to improve energy efficiency are expanding. Among the new designs, radiant floor cooling and heating systems which use capillary tubes are becoming viable means of reducing energy use. Radiant floor cooling and heating systems which use capillary tubes are creative and sustainable systems in which cool and hot water is circulated into capillary tube which has small diameter. In this study, the cooling and heating performance of this type of capillary tube system is investigated in an experimental study and a simulation using TRNSYS. The results of the experimental study show that under a peak load, a capillary tube radiant floor cooling system using geothermal energy can achieve desired indoor temperature without an additional heat source. The set room air temperature is maintained while the floor surface temperature, PMV and PPD remain within the comfort range. Also, this system is more economic than a packaged air conditioner system due to its higher COP. The results of the simulation show that the capillary tube radiant floor heating system maintains set temperature more stable than a PB pipe radiant floor heating system due to its lower supply temperature of hot water. In terms of energy consumption, the capillary tube radiant floor heating system is more efficient than the PB pipe radiant floor heating system.

A closed circuit cooling tower having high temperature of cooling water and small water flow rate is investigated. To study the characteristics of the heat transfer of heat exchanges in a cooling tower with multi paths a numerical method is used. The results show that the staggered tube arrangements in a bank show better performance than aligned ones for temperature variation with various outer diameters of tube bundles. In case of one pass, the 15.88 mm tube case shows about 9% better performance than the 25.4 mm tube case. In two paths, the tube outside diameter of 15.88 mm show about 14.4% better results than the 25.4 mm diameter case.
