The increasing heat generation rates in CPU of notebook computers motivate a research on cooling technologies with low thermal resistance. This paper develops a closed-loop two-phase cooling system using a micropump to circulate a dielectric liquid(PF5060). The cooling system consists of an evaporator containing a boiling enhancement microstructure connected to a condenser with mini fans providing external forced convection. The cooling system is characterized by a parametric study which determines the effects of volume fill ratio of coolant, existence of a boiling enhancement microstructure and pump flow rates on thermal performance of the closed loop. Experimental data shows the optimal parametric values which can dissipate 33.9W with a film heater maintained at $95^{\circ}C$.
In recent years, since the continuing increase in the capacity in personal computer such as the optimal performance, high quality and high resolution image, the computer system's components produce large amounts of heat during operation. This study analyzes and investigates the ability and efficiency of a cooling system inside a computer by means of central processing unit (CPU) and power supply cooling fan. This research was conducted to enhancement of efficiency of the cooling system inside the computer by making a structure which produces different air pressures in an air inflow tube. Consequently, when temperatures of the CPU and room inside computer were compared with a general personal computer, temperatures of the tested CPU, the room and the heat sink were as low as $5^{\circ}C$, $2.5^{\circ}C$ and $7^{\circ}C$ respectively. In addition to, revolution per minute (RPM) was shown as low as 250 after 1 hour operation. This research explored the possibility of enhancing the effective cooling of high-performance computer systems.
In this study, the cooling characteristics of a liquid cooler using thermoelectric module was experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted for various inner structures of liquid cooler (4 cases), hot fluid flow rates (0.15-0.25 L/min), number of T.E module (2, 4, 6 set), and the cooling water flow rates (200-600 cc/min) for both parallel and counter flow types. Among the results, better cooling performance geometry was selected. And experiment was also carried out to examine further enhancement of cooling performance by inserting coils (pitches: 0.2, 3, 6 mm) into the hot-fluid channel. Present results showed that the short serpentine type(case2) indicated the best cooling performance. In the case of coil pitch of 3 mm, the best cooling performance was shown, more than 10% increase of the inlet and outlet temperature difference, compared with the case of the cooler without coil. Consequently, the inserted coil pitch should be properly selected to improve cooling performance.
Turbine blade cooling is one of the major technologies to enhance the performance of gas turbine and combined cycle power plants. In this study, two cases of coolant pre-cooling schemes were applied in combined cycle power plant: decrease of coolant mass flow needed to cool turbine blade and increase of turbine inlet temperature (TIT). Both schemes are benefited by the decrease of coolant temperature through coolant pre-cooling. Under the same degree of pre-cooling, increasing TIT exhibits larger plant power boost and higher plant efficiency than reducing coolant flow. As a result, the former produces the same gas turbine power with a much smaller degree of pre-cooling than the latter. Another advantage of increasing TIT is a higher plant efficiency. Even with an assumption of partial achievement of the theoretically predicted TIT, the method of increasing TIT can provide considerably larger power output.
Recently, the automobile of the future will be able to substitute an electric vehicle for an internal combustion engine, so the following research is actively in the process of advancing. A traction motor is one of the core parts which compose the electric vehicle. Especially, it is difficult to connect cooling water piping to an in-wheel motor because the in-wheel motor is located within the wheel structure. This structure has disadvantage for closed type and air cooling, so the cooling design of motor housing and internal in-wheel motor is important. In this study, thermo-flow analysis of the in-wheel motor for vehicles was performed in consideration of ram air effect. In order to improve cooling efficiency of the motor, we variously changed geometries of housing and internal shape. As a result, we found that the cooling efficiency was most excellent, in case the cooling groove direction was same with air flow direction and arranged densely. Furthermore, we investigated the cooling performance enhancement with respect to variable geometries of internal in-wheel motor.
In this study, a two-phase closed loop cooling system is desinged and tested for a laptop computer using a FC-72. The cooling system is characterized by a parametric study which determines the effects of existence of a boiling enhancement microstructure, initial system pressure, volume fill ratio of coolant and inclination angle of condenser on the thermal performance of the closed loop. Experimental data show the optium condition when the volume ratio of working fluid is 70%, the pump flowing is 6ml/min, and the inclination angle of condenser is $0^{\circ}$. This research shows the maximum values which can dissipate 33W of chip power with a chip temperature maintained at $95^{\circ}C$.
Air-cooled heat sinks are employed in many electronic cooling applications since they provide significant heat transfer enhancement and operational flexibility. Strip-shaped fin heat sink is of interest and needs to be investigated as general cooling products for more applicability. The purposes of this study are to evaluate heat sink performance without bypass flow condition and to determine optimal heat sink geometries. The results show that the decreasing rate of thermal resistance of a heat sink decreases with increasing inlet air velocity, and the increasing rate of pressure drop increases with increasing inlet air velocity, but is not affected by input power. The increasing rate of optimal longitudinal fin spacing is larger than that of transverse fin spacing. The strip fin heat sink tested in this study showed better cooling performance compared to that of other plate fin type.matism. 2004; 50(11): 3504-3515.
The thermoelectric cooling system consisted of the thermoelectric module, a heat sink and a cooling fan, respectively. Also, the piezoelectric actuator was applied to improve the performance of thermoelectric cooling system and investigate the heat transfer phenomenon. The temperature distribution of test section was measured to investigate cooling characteristics of thermoelectric cooling system. The flow phenomenon of test section was visualized using visualization device. When the piezoelectric actuator was applied to the heat transfer process of thermoelectric cooling system, acoustic streaming was occurred in test section. The acoustic streaming was occurred forced convection flow, and was regularly formed the temperature distribution in test section. The results clearly show that the acoustic streaming is one of the prime effects to enhance the convection heat transfer and can enhance the performance of thermoelectric cooling system.
