To protect combustion chamber from high temperature combustion gas, regenerative cooling is used for most liquid rocket engine. Although regenerative cooling is the most effective way to protect the chamber from high heat flux, realization of this system requires detail analysis, manufacturing technique and high cost. To demonstrate the possibility of applying regenerative cooling to a real rocket engine, the hot fire test has been carried out for the sub-scale liquid rocket with the water cooling system. The main purpose of the test is to identify the problem area of design, safety and cost effective manufacturing technique. The coolant passage was 3 mm in width and wall thickness was 1 mm with stainless steel. Maximum combustion time and pressure were 60 seconds and 400 psi, respectively. The flow rate of coolant was reduced gradually from 2 kg/s to 0.12 kg/s throughout firing test, combustion chamber was visually examined and no dwfect was observed.

Helical-coil steam generator (HCSG) technology is a major design candidate for small modular reactors due to its compactness and capability to produce superheated steam with high generation efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of the passively autonomous power maneuvering by coupling the 3-D transient multi-physics of a soluble-boron-free (SBF) core with a time-dependent HCSG model. The predictor corrector quasi-static method was used to reduce the cost of the transient 3-D neutronic solution. In the numerical system simulations, the feedwater flow rate to the secondary of the HCSGs is adjusted to extract the demanded power from the primary loop. This varies the coolant temperature at the inlet of the SBF core, which governs the passively autonomous power maneuvering due to the strongly negative coolant reactivity feedback. Here, we simulate a 100-50-100 load-follow operation with a 5%/minute power ramping speed to investigate the feasibility of the passively autonomous load-follow in a 450 MWth SBF PWR. In addition, the passively autonomous frequency control operation is investigated. The various system models are coupled, and they are solved by an in-house Fortran-95 code. The results of this work demonstrate constant steam temperature in the secondary side and limited variation of the primary coolant temperature. Meanwhile, the variations of the core axial shape index and the core power peaking are sufficiently small.
This paper presents a modelling of thermal discharge performance for a static ice-on-coil ice-storage tank. Through the present study, discharging characteristics were examined with the existing results of theoretical and numerical heat transfer analyses. Also, an experiment was conducted to obtain a real set of discharge performance. The thermal effectiveness, the ratio of the actual heat transfer rate to the maximum possible heat transfer rate, decreased when the stored energy decreased during discharging period. And the effectiveness increased as the coolant flow rate through the storage increased, of which increasing rate decreased abruptly near the maximum and the minimum stored energy. An empirical correlation was obtained from the experimental and the numerical analysis data.

The injection uniformity of the fuel manifold in a liquid rocket engine has been analyzed with dividing plates to improve the cooling performance at the face plate. Three dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis has been performed to compare the injection uniformity for 5 candidate designs and has been verified to compare with the measured data for the optimal manifold design. For the case I and II, the coolant mass flux increases as the whole working fluid is enforced to flow under the dividing plate. The injection uniformity decreases due to the variation of mass flux at the end of dividing plate and the concentration of mass flow rate at the center of manifold. However case III and IV have uniform injection performance due to reduced mass flux concentration as the coolant can flow along both upper passage and lower passage of the dividing plate. Among the candidate designs, case IV is thought to be the optimal dividing plate with regard to cooling performance and injection uniformity.

The injection molding process is suitable for manufacturing complicated plastic products. As the customer request higher quality products increase, realization of the precise dimensional and shape controls is getting more important. For this purpose it is important to obtain uniform cooling procedure over the whole surface of the high temperature molded plastic. Failure to this may lead to different shrinkage speed, internal stresses and unwanted shape deformations. It is necessary to distribute coolant flow rates to the main channel and to the sub-channels properly to insure uniform cooling process when there are parallel cooling channels. In this study, three-dimensional turbulent flow simulations for representative parallel cooling channels were performed. To insure the intended flow rate to each sub-channels, various shape designs for the channel system were investigated. The results show that as the Reynolds number increases the effect of shape design is more profound. Through the proper flow distribution, uniform cooling effects would be expected.

The pipelines and equipments are degraded by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC), and a large-scale test facility was constructed for simulate the FAC phenomena in secondary coolant environment of PWR type nuclear power plants. Using this facility, FAC test was performed on weld pipe (carbon steel and low alloy steel) at the conditions of high velocity flow (> 10 m/s). Wall thickness was measured by high temperature ultrasonic monitoring systems (four-channel buffer rod type and waveguide type) during test period and room temperature manual ultrasonic method before and after test period. This work deals with the complex effects of flow velocity on the wall thinning in weld pipe and the test results showed that the higher flow velocity induced different increasement of wall thinning rate for the carbon steel and low alloy steel pipe.
Water cooling ducts are installed in the exhaust diffuser for high altitude tests of rocket engine to protect diffuser from high-temperature combustion gas. The mass flow rate and pressure of cooling water is designed to prevent boiling of cooling water in the ducts. Therefore, the estimation of maximum temperature of duct wall is important parameter in design of cooling system, especially pressure of cooling water. The method for predicting maximum temperatures of duct walls with variation of coolant flow rates was derived theoretically.
A numerical study was conducted to predict the performance curve of a canned motor pump for SMART(System Integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor). The study used a computational domain which included not only the pump but also a suction pipe and a volute casing with a discharging pipe in order to simulate an experimental setup. The ANSYS CFX program was utilized to obtain flow characteristics inside the pump as well as the overall pressure rise across the pump operating on- and off-design points. Computed results showed that the performance of the pump at off-design points was much lower than expected. Special attention was made to find the cause of the low performance of the pump operating at low flow rate.

A highly compact and thermally efficient water cooled oil cooler for automotive use without offset strip fin and casing is developed in this study. The study result has shown that eliminating the fin and casing in the oil cooler the manufacturing process and cost and can be simplified and reduced greatly without sacrificing the thermal capacity. The oil cooler developed in the study uses the dimply type heat transfer core element design instead of offset strip fin and eliminates the outer casing for coolant water flow by applying specially made parallel loop flow design. In the study the thermal design program for the present oil cooler also was developed and validated experimentally.
In this study, the heat balance test of an engine was conducted, and the heat released to coolant is measured and corrected using a power adjustment factor for high fuel temperature to simulate heat rejection of the engine. An engine-converter matching simulation program which can compute the engine speed, transmission output speed, transmission input and output power is developed from the vehicle, transmission and engine performance curve. With this information and the engine heat rejection characteristics, the engine and transmission heat rejection rates can be determined at given condition. In analyzing the air mass flow, a sub program computing the air mass flow rate from the equation of the pressure balance between cooling fan static pressure rise and pressure losses of cooling components is developed.
