  • In this paper, flow-induced flutter instability of cantilever carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam is investigated. Non-classical effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extend Galerkin method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin method. Cantilevered carbon nanotubes are damped with decaying amplitude for flow velocity below a certain critical value, however, beyond this critical flow velocity, flutter instability may occur. Variations of critical flow velocity with both radius ratio and length of carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze nonlinear dynamics of a tethered satellite. The coupled non-linear equations of motion are derived by using the extended Hamilton's principle with the polar coordinate system. In order to analyze the response of tethered satellite, time responses are computed by the Newmark's time integration method. We also investigate the dynamic behavior of the system and the effects of length of tether, tip mass and conveyed fluid through the tether with time variation.

  • This paper considers a pipeline conveying one-dimensional unsteady flow inside. The dynamics of the fluid-pipe system is represented by two coupled equations of motion for the transverse and axial displacements, which are linearized from a set of partial differential equations which consists of the axial and transverse equations of motion of the pipeline and the equations of momentum and continuity of the internal flow. Because of the complex nature of fluid-pipe interactive mechanism, a very accurate solution method is required to get sufficiently accurate dynamic characteristics of the pipeline. In the literatures, the finite element models have been popularly used for the problems. However, it has been well recognized that finite element method (FEM) may provide poor solutions especially at high frequency. Thus, in this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the pipeline and its accuracy is evaluated by comparing with the solutions by FEM.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid and having two attached masses. Some valves or other mechanical components in pipe systems can be regarded as attached lumped masses. Governing equations are derived by energy expressions, and numerical technique using Galerkin's method is applied to discretize the equations of small motion of the pipe. Effects of attached masses on the dynamic stability of a vertical cantilevered pipe conveying fluid are investigated for various locations and magnitudes of the attached lumped masses.

  • The nonlinear differential equations of motion of a fluid conveying curved pipe are derived by use of Hamiltonian approach. The extensible dynamics of curled pipe is based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Some significant differences between linear and nonlinear equations and the dynamic characteristics are discussed. Generally, it can be shown that the natural frequencies in curved pipes are changed with flow velocity. Linearized natural frequencies of nonlinear equations are slightly different from those of linear equations.

  • The paper presents the relationship between the eigenvalue branches and the corresponding flutter modes of cantilevered pipes conveying fluid. The pipes are located on elastic foundations which can be regarded as a soil model. In this paper, elastic foundations are assumed as linear distributed translational springs. Governing equations of motion are derived by extended Hamilton's principle, and the numerical scheme using finite element method is applied to obtain the discretized equations. The critical How velocity and stability maps of the pipe are investigated according to the variation of elastic foundation parameters, mass ratios of the pipe and internal damping Parameter. Also, the vibrational modes associated with flutter are shown.

  • The paper presents both theoretical and experimental study fur dynamic instabilities of a vortical cantilevered pipe with two attached lumped masses conveying fluid. The two attached lumped masses can be considered as valves or some mechanical paras in real pipe systems. Eigenvalue behaviors depending on the flow velocity are investigated for the change of Positions and magnitudes of an attached lumped mass and a tip mass. In order to verify appropriate of numerical solutions, experiments were accomplished. Theoretical predictions have a good agreement with experimental ones.

  • In this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the uniform straight pipelines conveying internal unsteady fluid. The spectral element matrix is formulated by using the exact frequency-domain solutions of the pipe-dynamics equations. The spectral element dynamic analyses are then conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the present spectral element model and to investigate the vibration characteristics and internal fluid transients of an example pipeline system.

  • The effect of rotary inertia of concentrated masses on the natural vibration of the simply supported-simply supported fluid conveying pipe has been studied. For the analysis Galerkin's method is used fer transformation of the governing equation to the eigenvalue problem and the natural frequencies and mode shapes for the system have been found. Introduction of rotary inertia results in lots of change on the natural frequencies and mode shapes and its effect is highly noticed at the higher natural frequencies and mode shapes. Consideration of rotary inertia results in much decrease on the natural frequencies and its neglect could lead to erroneous results.
