  • The use of fossil fuel and biogas production causes air pollution and climate change problems. Research endeavors continue to focus on converting methane and carbon dioxide, which are the major causes of climate change, into quality energy sources. In this study, a novel plasma-carbon converter was proposed to convert biogas into high quality gas, which is linked to photovoltaic and wind power and which poses a problem on generating electric power continuously. The characteristics of conversion and gas production were investigated to find a possibility for biogas conversion, involving parametric tests according to the change in the main influence variables, such as O2/C ratio, total gas feed rate, and CO2/CH4 ratio. A higher O2/C ratio gave higher conversions of methane and carbon dioxide. Total gas feed rate showed maximum conversion at a certain specified value. When CO2/CH4 feed ratio was decreased, both conversions increased. As a result, the production of solar fuel by plasma oxidation destruction-carbon material gasification conversion, which was newly suggested in this study, could be known as a possibly useful technology. When O2/C ratio was 0.8 and CO2/CH4 was 0.67 while the total gas supply was at 40 L min-1 (VHSV = 1.37), the maximum conversions of carbon dioxide and methane were achieved. The results gave the highest production for hydrogen and carbon dioxide which were high-quality fuel.

  • In this paper, we proposed and designed a novel floating point converter which supports single and double precisions of IEEE754 standard. The proposed convertor supports conversions between floating point number single/double precision and signed fixed point number(32bits/64bits) as well as conversions between signed integer(32bits/64bits) and floating point number single/double precision and conversions between floating point number single and double precisions. We defined a new internal format to convert various input types into one type so that overflow checking could be conducted easily according to range of output types. The internal format is similar to the extended format of floating point double precision defined in IEEE754 2008 standard. This standard specifies that minimum exponent bit-width of the extended format of floating point double precision is 15bits, but 11bits are enough to implement the proposed converting unit. Also, we optimized rounding stage of the convertor unit so that we could make it possible to operate rounding and represent correct negative numbers using an incrementer instead an adder. We designed single cycle data path and 5 cycles data path. After describing the HDL model for two data paths of the convertor, we synthesized them with TSMC 180nm technology library using Synopsys design compiler. Cell area of synthesis result occupies 12,886 gates(2 input NAND gate), and maximum operating frequency is 411MHz.

  • Zirconium(IV) chloride is found to be an efficient catalyst for the electrophilic addition reaction of indole with aldehydes/ketones to afford the corresponding bis(indolyl methanes in good yields. The remarkable features of this new procedure are high conversions, shorter reaction times, cleaner reaction profiles and simple experimental and work-up procedures.

  • This paper describes the calculation technique for guided wave propagation with a semi-analytical finite element method (SAFEM) and shows some results of numerical calculation and guided wave simulation for plates, pipes and railway rails. The SAFEM calculation gives dispersion curves and wave structures for bar-like structures. Dispersion curve software for a pipe is introduced, and also dispersion corves for a rail are given and experimentally verified. The mode conversions in a plate with a defect and in a pipe with an elbow or a defect are shown as examples of our guided wave simulations.

  • As pronouns are resolved with their antecedents, definite NPs may enter into the anaphora-antecedent relations with indefinite NPs. This paper is to provide faster and more efficient computational algorithms by which definite NPs are resolved effectively, For this purpose, this paper extends Chierchia's Binding Theory in Categorial Grammar, and definite NPs are resolved with their antecedents by similar algorithms that are used to reflexive resolution. In these algorithms, the relations between indefinite NP and definite NP are represented with λ-expressions, and definite NPs are resolved with their antecedent by λ-conversions.

  • Sustainable agriculture is a management system for ecological equilibrium and long-run productivity. Conversions from conventional to sustainable farming systems could have good effects on future generations' productivity and agricultural market opening in Korea. However, farmers are not willing to adopt sustainable farming system as because of farm income reductions, so government programs may be needed. Government programs should have research support for cost reductions, direct support for advocational livestock breedings and income security, and relative price changes for reducing agricultural chemicals.

  • This paper discusses the system design of a synthetic aperture radar system based on a pulse-echo radar. The design consists of an ultra-wide bandwidth antenna, an amplitude modulation, timing stabilities, and high speed a/d conversions with an equivalent-time sampling. Experiment results show that GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) can be used to explore buried electric facilities.

  • The partial oxidation of methane is one of important processes for hydrogen production. As a membrane reactor, palladium-silver (Pd-Ag) alloy membrane prepared by electroless plating technique was employed for partial oxidation of methane. The experimental variables were reaction temperature, $O_2/CH_4$ mole ratio, $CH_4$ feed rate, and $N_2$ sweep gas flow rate. The methane conversions increased with the reaction temperatures in the range of 350 to $730^{\circ}C$. The highest methane conversion and CO selectivity were obtained at the condition of $O_2/CH_4$ mole ratio of 0.5 and $730^{\circ}C$ using commercially available nickel/alumina catalyst. The Pd-Ag membrane reactor showed higher methane conversions, 10~40% higher, compared to those in a traditional reactor.

  • To investigate the characteristics of pyrolysis for LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE, the low temperature pyrolysis was carried out in the range of 425 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 35 to 65 min. The liquid products formed during pyrolysis were classified into gasoline, kerosene, light oil and wax according to the distillation temperatures based on the petroleum product quality standard of Korea Petroleum Quality Inspection Institute. TGA experiments for three PE samples showed that the onset temperature of pyrolysis increased with increasing heating rate, and the onset temperature of pyrolysis at a fixed heating rate was in the order of LDPE$475^{\circ}C$. Yields of gasoline and kerosene were highest at $450^{\circ}C$, 65 min and decreased slightly at above $475^{\circ}C$.
