This study has been carried out to develop TM (Thermal to Mechanical) conversion systems for electric power generation using one of the Low Temperature Differential (LTD) Stirling engines called MM-7 capable of harnessing low temperature waste heat whose temperature is only $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ above the ambient. Measurements were made on the torque and rpm for a number of temperature differentials between the engine hot and cold ends, which could be effectively applied in developing the most suitable configuration for the high performance TM (Thermal to Mechanical) conversion system.

The Solar energy is either used as a solar thermal energy or converted to electrical power through power conversion system. The latter method is defined as a solar cell changing the solar energy into the direct electric energy or power conversion that convert the dc power into ac power. For the solar cell to be a practical alternative energy, the study should be focused not only on the solar cell ,but also the power conversion system for common power source. In this study, we get the suitable power to common load ,using Ag Grid DSC(Dye-sensitized solar cell). Our purpose is to achieve the common solar cell power generation system ,using converter and PWM(Pulse width modulation) inverter system controled by DSP.

In this paper, we show that, in case of piezoelectric micropower generator, just replacing Schottky diodes in the bridge rectifier with ultra-low reverse leakage current diodes improves the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency by more than 100%. Experimental and PSPICE simulation results show that, due to the ultra-low leakage current, the charging speed of the circuit employing PAD1 is higher than that of the circuit employing Schottky diodes and the saturation voltage of the circuit employing PAD1 is also higher. This study suggests that , when the internal impedance of source is very large (a few tens of $M{\Omega}$) such that maximum charging current is a few microamperes or less, in order to realize literally the energy scavenging system, ultra-low reverse leakage current diodes should be used for efficient energy conversion. Since low-level vibration is ubiquitous in the environment ranging from human movement to large infrastructures and the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency is much more critical for use of these vibrations, we believe that the improvement in the efficiency using ultra-low leakage diodes, as found in this work, will widen greatly the application of piezoelectric micropower generator.

To enhance the performance of SEWGS system by holding the WGS catalyst in a SEWGS reactor using bed inserts, effect of bed insert geometry on CO conversion of WGS catalyst was measured and investigated. Small scale fluidized bed reactor was used as experimental apparatus and tablet shaped WGS catalyst and sand particle were used as bed materials. The cylinder type and the spring type bed inserts were used to hold the WGS catalysts. The CO conversion of WGS catalyst with the change of steam/CO ratio was determined based on the exit gas analysis. Moreover, gas flow direction was confirmed by bed pressure drop measurement for each case. The measured CO conversion using the bed inserts showed high value comparable to previous results even though at low catalyst content. Most of input gas flowed through the bed center side when we charged tablet type catalyst into the cylinder type bed insert and this can cause low $CO_2$ capture efficiency because the possibility of contact between input gas and $CO_2$ absorbent is low in this case. However, the spring type bed insert showed good reactivity and good distribution of gas, and therefore, the spring type bed insert was selected as the best bed insert for SEWGS process.

The ortho-para $H_2$ catalytic conversion equipment has been developed to reduce the evaporation loss from stored liquid hydrogen. The ortho-para $H_2$ conversion heat is evaluated at liquid nitrogen temperature. This problem is of particular interest in the design of the ortho-para $H_2$ converter in a hydrogen liquefaction system. The ortho-para $H_2$ conversion equipment consists of a catalytic converter, a precooler, and a liquid nitrogen bath. 30-90 cc of $Fe(OH)_3$ are employed as a catalyst in the present converter. The conversion heat and conversion effectiveness are evaluated when mass flow rate of hydrogen is in the range of 0.05-l.6 g/min. It is found that the ortho-para conversion heat is increased while conversion effectiveness is decreased as the mass flow rate of hydrogen is increased. Both the ortho-para conversion heat and conversion effectiveness are increased with an increase in the amount of the catalyst.

The rapidly growing demand for electric power systems in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) require simpler, cost-effective, and higher performance components. In this paper, a novel power conversion system for hybrid electric vehicles is proposed for these needs. The proposed power conversion system reduces the conversion system cost while preserving same functionality. The proposed power conversion system can boost multi-sources to drive a traction motor and to store energy at the same time reducing number of switching components. In this paper, all operational modes of the proposed converter are explained in detail and verified by a computer simulation first. Then, the topology and operational modes are experimentally verified. Based on the results, the feasibility of the proposed multi-mode single leg power conversion system for EV and HEV applications is discussed.

Photoacoustic generation of ultrasound is an effective approach for development of high-frequency and high-amplitude ultrasound transmitters. This requires an efficient energy converter from optical input to acoustic output. For such photoacoustic conversion, various light-absorbing materials have been used such as metallic coating, dye-doped polymer composite, and nanostructure composite. These transmitters absorb laser pulses with 5-10 ns widths for generation of tens-of-MHz frequency ultrasound. The short optical pulse leads to rapid heating of the irradiated region and therefore fast thermal expansion before significant heat diffusion occurs to the surrounding. In this purpose, nanocomposite thin films containing gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or carbon nanofibers have been recently proposed for high optical absorption, efficient thermoacosutic transfer, and mechanical robustness. These properties are necessary to produce a high-amplitude ultrasonic output under a low-energy optical input. Here, we investigate carbon nanotube (CNT)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite transmitters and their nanostructure-originated characteristics enabling extraordinary energy conversion. We explain a thermoelastic energy conversion mechanism within the nanocomposite and examine nanostructures by using a scanning electron microscopy. Then, we measure laser-induced damage threshold of the transmitters against pulsed laser ablation. Particularly, laser-induced damage threshold has been largely overlooked so far in the development of photoacoustic transmitters. Higher damage threshold means that transmitters can withstand optical irradiation with higher laser energy and produce higher pressure output proportional to such optical input. We discuss an optimal design of CNT-PDMS composite transmitter for high-amplitude pressure generation (e.g. focused ultrasound transmitter) useful for therapeutic applications. It is fabricated using a focal structure (spherically concave substrate) that is coated with a CNT-PDMS composite layer. We also introduce some application examples of the high-amplitude focused transmitter based on the CNT-PDMS composite film.
This study aimed to assess biomass energy resources available from waste wood due to forest land conversion. Forest land area of 7,806ha on annul average during 2001-2005 was converted to other land use and the growing stock of $266,551m^3$ was felled annually due to the conversion. Biomass energy potential of waste wood due to forest land conversion was estimated to 102,325 tons of biomass on annual average during 2001-2005 of which 57,945 tons were from coniferous forest and 44,379 tons were from broadleaved forest. Biomass energy Potential Per unit area Per year increased for the same period and was estimated to 13.0 tons of biomass on annual average.
In this study, using a wet chemical process, we evaluate the effectiveness of different solution concentrations in removing layers from a solar cell, which is necessary for recovery of high-purity silicon. A 4-step wet etching process is applied to a 6-inch back surface field(BSF) solar cell. The metal electrode is removed in the first and second steps of the process, and the anti-reflection coating(ARC) is removed in the third step. In the fourth step, high purity silicon is recovered by simultaneously removing the emitter and the BSF layer from the solar cell. It is confirmed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy(ICP-MS) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy(SIMS) analyses that the effectiveness of layer removal increases with increasing chemical concentrations. The purity of silicon recovered through the process, using the optimal concentration for each process, is analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy(ICP-AES). In addition, the silicon wafer is recovered through optimum etching conditions for silicon recovery, and the solar cell is remanufactured using this recovered silicon wafer. The efficiency of the remanufactured solar cell is very similar to that of a commercial wafer-based solar cell, and sufficient for use in the PV industry.

In this study, we investigate the relationship between the peeling behavior of the backsheet of a photovoltaic(PV) module and its surface temperature in order facilitate removal of the backsheet from the PV module. At low temperatures, the backsheet does not peel off whereas, at high temperatures, part of the backsheet remains on the surface of the PV module after the peeling process. The backsheet material remaining on the surface of the PV module is confirmed by X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis to be poly-ethylene(PE). Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) is also performed to investigate the interfacial characteristics of the layers of the PV module. In particular, DSC provides the melting temperature($T_m$) of laminated ethylene vinyl acetate(EVA) and of the backsheet on the PV module. It is found that the backsheet does not peel off below the $T_m$ of ethylene of EVA, while the PE layer of the backsheet remains on the surface of the PV module above the $T_m$ of the PE. Thus, the backsheet is best removed at a temperature between the $T_m$ of ethylene and that of PE layer.
