  • This case study surveyed management situations of environmentally friendly farming(EFF) producers' organization and their main activities. Farmers are aging as an average age of 55-year old and producing fruit-bearing vegetables. The EFF did not increase farmer's income, however, price and income was stabilized more than that of conventional farming because of contract farming. Farm household liabilities are caused by purchasing agricultural machinery, materials and so on. Farmers of EFF have been also cultivating conventional farming, but they don't plan much conversion intention of conventional farming into EFF owing to lack of differentiated and stable market for their EFF products. And they are guessing that EFF income will increase a little. For increasing of EFF income, they think that it is necessary to reduce production cost, produce high quality production, develop processing foods, enlarge contract farming and so on.

  • Multilevel converters have emerged like a new strategy for energy conversion from medium power to high power. The main characteristic of the topologies classified as multilevel, is the use of commutation devices connected in series, allowing the distribution of the voltage and reducing stress in the commutation switches. Stacked Multicell Converter (SMC), is classified as single-phase voltage source inverter(VSI). Due to the fact, the SMC generates a signal of alternating current of several levels of voltage of direct current. The following work will demonstrate the flexibility of the above mentioned topology using a low cost control circuit architecture.

  • In this paper, a 300[W] class boost type single-phase inverter system which can compensate voltage sag on source side is designed and implemented. This system is a two-stage conversion system composed of a boost converter and a PWM inverter. If the voltage sag has appeared at the point of common coupling, the boost converter would be operated to compensate it. The boost converter and the inverter were constructed on single smart power module(SPM) to implement low cost system. The system is designed for that the THD of output voltage is below 5[%]. Finally, the validity of the design for the inverter system is verified by both simulations and experiments.

  • Conversion of light energy to electrical energy by using a solar cell has long been considered as one of the option for an electrical energy supply in the future. In the past, commercial use was restricted largely to remote area applications where conventional electricity is expensive. Recently, the major application of the solar cells changed to become generation of residential electricity in urban areas where the electricity is already supplied by the conventional grid. This paper covers the current market and technology status of the solar cells and future prospect of their terrestrial applications. Reviewing market trend, this paper discusses high efficiency approach in silicon solar cells, low cost approach in silicon solar cells and finally covers future prospects of silicon solar cells.

  • The objective of this paper is to provide a comparison between the Line Start Permanent Magnet, Skeleton type Brushless DC, and the Snail-cam type Switched Reluctance Motor. These motors are compared under the same load characteristic as the cooling fan motor of a refrigerator. The comparison consists of speed, output power, efficiency, copper loss, and cost for three different motors. For the given application, the results provide an indication of the best machine suited with respect to performance and cost.

  • To invigorate the tapped-inductor boost (TIB) topology in emerging high step-up applications for off-grid products, a lossless snubber consisting of two capacitors and three diodes is proposed. Since the switch voltage stress is minimized in the proposed circuit, it is allowed to use a device with a lower cost, higher efficiency, and higher availability. Moreover, since the leakage inductance is fully utilized, no effort to minimize it is required. This allows for a highly productive and cost-effective design of the tapped-inductor. The proposed circuit also shows a high step-up ratio and provides relaxation of the switching loss and diode reverse-recovery. In this paper, the operation is analyzed in detail, the steady-state equation is derived, and the design considerations are discussed. Some experimental results are provided to confirm the validity of the proposed circuit.

  • The conventional central photo voltaic inverters have several problems. First, shadow problem in each solar panel, and high DC voltage problem from each panel because of concentration to one central inverter. Therefore, module integrated inverter is proposed to solve these problems. The inverter should be small and cost effective. The cost and size in the inverter depend on the inductor. So the switching frequency should be increased to reduce the inductor and total size, but there is a problem in efficiency because of the losses in turn-on and turn-off. In the paper, the critical conduction mode(CRM) switching method is adopted to reduce the switching loss and interleaving method is proposed to increase the efficiency in Flyback converter. Finally, the validity of the proposed scheme is investigated with simulated and experimental results for a prototype system rated at 200W.

  • A new current-balancing multi-channel LED driver is proposed in this paper. The conventional LED driver system consists of three cascaded power conversion stages and its driver stage has the same number of expensive boost converters as those of the LED channels. On the other hand, the proposed LED driver system consists of two cascaded power stages and its driver stage requires only passive devices instead of expensive boost converters. Nevertheless, all of the currents through multi-channel LEDs can be well balanced. Therefore, it features a smaller system size, improved efficiency, and lower cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed driver, its operation and performance are verified on a prototype for a 46" LCD TV.

  • Bio-ethanol is a promising alternative energy source for reducing both consumption of crude oil and environmental pollution from renewable resources like lignocellulosic biomass such as wood, forest residuals, agricultural leftovers and urban wastes. Based on current technologies, the cost of ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials is relatively high, and the main challenges are the low yield and high cost of the hydrolysis process. Development of more efficient pretreatment technology (physical, chemical, physico-chemical, and biological pretreatment), integration of several microbiological conversions into fewer reactors, and increasing ethanol production capacity may decrease specific investment for ethanol producing plants. The purpose of pretreatment of lignocellulosic material is to improve the accessible surface area of cellulose for hydrolytic enzymes and enhance the conversion of cellulose to glucose and finally high yield ethanol production which is economic and environmental friendly.
