  • We generated the second harmonic of Ti:sapphire laser in LiI$O_3$ and BBO crystals. Two LiI$O_3$, crystals and a BBO crystal were used, and the lengths of LiI$O_3$ crystals were 5, 10 mm and that of BBO was 7 mm. We measured the conversion efficiencies of LiI$O_3$ and BBO in the wavelength range of 780-810 nm, and compared with the caculation of theory. The measured second harmonic conversion coefficients were (1.06${\pm}0.05){\times}10^4\;W^1$(10mm), (5.28${\pm}0.33){\times}10^5\;W^1$(5mm), and (2.96${\pm}0.05){\times}10^5\;W^1$(BBO, 7 mm) at the fundamental wavelength of 794 nm.

  • In case of power demand forecasting, the most important problems are to deal with the load of special-days. Accordingly, this paper presents the method that forecasting long (the Lunar New Year, the Full Moon Festival) and short(the Planting Trees Day, the Memorial Day, etc) special-days peak load using neural networks and regression models. long and short special-days peak load forecast by neural networks models uses pattern conversion ratio and four-order orthogonal polynomials regression models. There are using that special-days peak load data during ten years(1985∼1994). In the result of special-days peak load forecasting, forecasting % error shows good results as about 1 ∼2[%] both neural networks models and four-order orthogonal polynomials regression models. Besides, from the result of analysis of adjusted coefficient of determination and F-test, the significance of the are convinced four-order orthogonal polynomials regression models. When the neural networks models are compared with the four-order orthogonal polynomials regression models at a view of the results of special-days peak load forecasting, the neural networks models which uses pattern conversion ratio are more effective on forecasting long special-days peak load. On the other hand, in case of forecasting short special-days peak load, both are valid.

  • Forest disturbances including forest fire, insect pests and diseases, landslides, and forest conversion from 1976 to 2005 were investigated to trace the changes of major forest disturbance agents and their characteristics over time in accordance with changes in natural and social environment in South Korea. While the damaged area by insect pests and diseases continuously decreased for the past 30 years, damaged areas by forest fire and landslide were fluctuating through years. The interval of large forest fires has become shorter with increased tree volume. The precipitation between January and April were significantly correlated with large fire occurrences as Pearson's correlation coefficient -0.400 (P=0.029). The composition of major insect pests and diseases damaging Korean forests has been changed continuously, and become more diversified. While damages by pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spectabilis) and pine needle gall midge (Thecodiplosis japonensis) decreased, damage by introduced pests has been more serious recently. The change of precipitation pattern that brought more localized heavy rain or powerful typhoon resulted in the recent increase in landslide areas. The major land uses to induce forest conversion have been changed, reflecting the changes in industrial structure in South Korea as agriculture and mining in 1970s, mining and golf ranges classified in pasture in 1980s, and road and housing construction in 1990s and 2000s. Changes in forest disturbance patterns in South Korea show that a country's industrial development is jointly working with global warming on forest stand dynamics. Altering energy structure and land use pattern induced by industrial development accumulates forest volume and reforms microenvironments on forest floor, interacting with climate change, inducing shorter interval of large forest fire and changes in major species composition of forest insect pests and diseases.

  • Background: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a non-invasive marker for eosinophilic airway inflammation and a good predictor of response to corticosteroids. There is a need for a reliable and accurate measurement method, as FeNO measurements have been widely used in clinical practice. Our study aimed to compare two FeNO analyzers and derive a conversion equation for FeNO measurements in adults. Methods: We included 99 participants who had chief complaints of chronic cough and difficulty in breathing. The participants underwent concurrent FeNO measurement using NIOX VERO (Circassia AB) and NObreath (Bedfont). We compared the values of the two devices and analyzed their correlation and agreement. We then formulated an equation to convert FeNO values measured by NObreath into those obtained by NIOX VERO. Results: The mean age of the participants was 51.2±17.1 years, with a female predominance (58.6%). Approximately 60% of the participants had asthma. The FeNO level measured by NIOX VERO (median, 27; interquartile range [IQR], 15-45) was significantly lower than that measured by NObreath (median, 38; IQR, 22-58; p<0.001). There was a strong positive correlation between the two devices (r=0.779, p<0.001). Additionally, Bland-Altman plots and intraclass correlation coefficient demonstrated a good agreement. Using linear regression, we derived the following conversion equation: natural log (Ln) (NObreath)=0.728×Ln (NIOX VERO)+1.244. Conclusion: The FeNO values of NIOX VERO and NObreath were in good agreement and had positive correlations. Our proposed conversion equation could help assess the accuracy of the two analyzers.

  • The performance monitoring system in the power plant should have the capability to estimate power generation efficiency accurately. Several power generation efficiency models have been proposed for the combined heat and power (CHP) plant which produces both electricity and process steam(or heating energy, hereinafter expressed by process steam only). However, most of the models are not sufficiently accurate due to the wrong evaluation of the process steam value. The study suggests Electricity Conversion Efficiency (ECE) model with determination of the heat rate of process steam using operational data. The suggested method is applied to the design data and the resulted trajectory curve of power generation efficiency meets the data closely with R2 99.91%. This result confirms that ECE model with determination of the model coefficient using the operational data estimate the efficiency so accurately that can be used for performance monitoring of CHP plant.

  • Effective dose conversion coefficients from unit activity radionuclides contaminated on the ground surface were calculated by using MCNP4A rode and male/female anthropomorphic phantoms. The simulation calculations were made for 19 energy points in the range of 40 keV to 10 MeV. The effective doses E resulting from unit source intensity for different energy were compared to the effective dose equivalent $H_E$ of previous studies. Our E values are lower by 30% at low energy than the $H_E$ values given in the Federal Guidance Report of USEPA. The effective dose response functions derived by polynomial fitting of the energy-effective dose relationship are as follows: $f({\varepsilon})[fSv\;m^2]=\;0.0634\;+\;0.727{\varepsilon}-0.0520{\varepsilon}^2+0.00247{\varepsilon}^3,\;where\;{\varepsilon}$ is the gamma energy in MeV. Using the response function and the radionuclide decay data given in ICRP 38, the effective dose conversion coefficients for unit activity contamination on the ground surface were calculated with addition of the skin dose contribution of beta particles determined by use of the DOSEFACTOR code. The conversion coefficients for 90 important radionuclides were evaluated and tabulated. Comparison with the existing data showed that a significant underestimates could be resulted when the old conversion coefficients were used, especially for the nuclides emitting low energy photons or high energy beta particles.

  • MIRD-type Korean adult male phantom, 'KMIRD' was constructed to calculate Korean-specific dosimetric quantities for radiation protection consideration. The external shape of KMIRD was based on national physical standard data of Korean. KMIRD has thicket trunk than MIRD5 and arm models divided from trunk. The height and weight of the KMIRD are 171 cm and 63.8 kg. ICRP23 data were referred to constitute organs and tissues of KMIRD. However nine organs were constructed based on Korean reference data provided by Radiation Health Research Institute. In the present study, the MCNPX2.3 Monte Carlo transport code was combined with KMIRD to calculate dose conversion coefficients for photon in the energy range from 0.05 to 10 MeV. The simulated irradiation geometries are broad parallel photon beams in AP, PA, LLAT and RLAT direction. Absorbed dose conversion coefficients were compared with data calculated with MIRD5, MIRD-type phantom based on ICRP23 reference man. In some organs, the discrepancies between two phantoms amount up to nearly 30%. The effective doses conversion coefficients of KMIRD are lower than those of MIRD5. The dose discrepancies between two MIRD-type phantoms ate because of physical differences between Korean and Western, also geometric differences between two phantoms. KMIRD should be revised using the full set of Korean reference data of all organs. The developed MIRD-type Korean adult male phantom can be applied to dose assessment of internal exposure.

  • This paper was conducted as an attempt in order to construct the data bank of target strength for acoustic estimation of fish length in the coastal waters of Korea. The fish length dependence of acoustic target strength for 13 large yellow croakers (Pseudosciaena crocea) at 75 kHz was investigated and the prediction of the target strength by using the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode model (KRM model) was compared with target strength measurements. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. In the averaged target strength pattern for 13 large yellow croakers the maximum target strength was -35.13 dB at $-13.35^{\circ}$ on a tilted angle. 2. The relationship between fork length(L, cm) and averaged target strength(TS, dB) was expressed as follows; TS=23. 76log (L) -73.45 (r=0.47) TS=20log(L) -67.35 From this result, the conversion coefficient was -73.45 dB and 6.1 dB lower than the coefficient -67.35 dB where the value of the slope of the regression equation is forced to be 20. 3. Averaged target strength and a length conversion coefficient derived from a target strength histogram for 13 large yellow croakers of mean length 25.59 cm were -41.23 dB, -69.72 dB, respectively. 4. In the range of $$2;{\ll} L (fish length /{\lambda}(wave length);{\ll}40$$, the prediction of the averaged target strength by the KRM model increased gradually with the increasing of $L/{\lambda}$ and was lower than the measured target strength.

  • The 1.54 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ forward and backward stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) have been studied in CH$_4$pumped by 1.06 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Nd:YAG laser. The forward and backward SRS output energy in a single pass were measured at dufferent CH$_4$pressures. Under steady state conditions, the pump input threshold energies and Raman gains in forward and backward directions were for Raman conversion at various CH$_4$pressures for a tight focusing geometry. The forward and backward slope efficiency for Raman conversion were 18% and 34% respectively. The pump input threshold energy of the backward SRS was lower than that of the forward. In backward SRS, the experimental input laser threshold and Raman gain values were in good agreement with the calculated values at different pressures of CH$_4$. The retio of the backward to the forward SRS gain was appoximately 1.4 times above 1200 psi. We obtained that the backward Raman gain coefficient was 0.32 cm/GW, and the forward Raman gain coefficient 0.23cm/GW at 1400 psi. Asymmetry of the forward and backward Raman gain is caused by the interaction between different pump intensities of each direction duting the amplification of the Stokers. The backward Raman gain is proportional to the average pump intensity. However, the forward SRS output grows by depleting the local pump intensity.

  • Machine tool design concepts have evolved towards high efficiency, accurate precision. high structural integrity, and multi-functional systems. Like many other structures, machine tools are also composed of many parts. When these parts are assembled, many kinds of joints are used. In the finite element analysis of these assembled structures, most joints are commonly considered as rigid joints. But, to get the more accurate solution, we need to model these joints in a appropriate manner. In this study, rational dynamic modeling and analysis method for complex structures are studied with special attention to slide way joints. For modeling of slide way joints, a general modeling technique is used by influence coefficients method which is applied to the conversion of detailed finite element model to the equivalent reduced joint model. The theoretical part of this method is illustrated and the method is applied to the structure with slide way joint. In this method. the non-linearity of the contact surfaces is considered within a proper range and the boundary effect of the joint model can be eliminated. The proposed method was applied to finite element modal analysis of a clamp jointed cantilever beam and slide way joints of the vertical type lathe. The method can also be used to other kinds of joint modeling. The results of these analysis were compared with those of Yoshimura models and rigid joint models. which demonstrated the practical applicability of the proposed method.
