  • This paper presents the effects of a virtual mass with a low-pass filter on the stability boundary of a virtual spring in the haptic system. In general, a haptic system consists of a haptic device, a sampler, a virtual impedance model and zero-order-hold. The virtual impedance is modeled as a virtual spring and a virtual mass. However the high-frequency noise due to the sampling time and the quantization error of sampled data may be generated when an acceleration is measured to compute the inertia force of the virtual mass. So a low-pass filter is needed to prevent the unstable behavior due to the high-frequency noise. A finite impulse response (FIR) filter is added to the measurement process of the acceleration and the effects on the haptic stability are simulated. According to the virtual mass with the FIR filter and the sampling time, the stability boundary of the virtual spring is analyzed through the simulation. The maximum available stiffness to guarantee the stable behavior is reduced, but simulation results still show that the stability boundary of the haptic system with the virtual mass is larger than that of the haptic system without the virtual mass.

  • Road facilities such as CCTV poles have potential risk of collision accidents with a car. A collision detection algorithm installed in the facility allows the collision accident to be known remotely. Most collision detection algorithms are operated by simply focusing on whether a collision have occurred, because these methods are used to measure only acceleration data from a 3-axis sensor to detect collision. However, it is difficult to detect other detailed information such as malfunction of the sensor, collision direction and collision strength, because it is not known without witness the accident. Therefore, we proposed enhanced detection algorithm to get the collision direction, and the collision strength from the tilt of the facility after accident using a 9-axis sensor in this paper. In order to confirm the performance of the algorithm, an accuracy evaluation experiment was conducted according to the data measurement cycle and the invocation cycle to an detection algorithm. As a result, the proposed enhanced algorithm confirmed 100% accuracy for 50 weak collisions and 50 strong collisions at the 9-axis data measurement cycle of 10ms and the invocation cycle of 1,000ms. In conclusion, the algorithm proposed is expected to provide more reliable and detailed information than existing algorithm.

  • In this study, the reinforcement effect of the compression-only bridge seismic reinforcement method, which is mainly applied to old bridges, was studied through SSI analysis. As the analysis conditions, acceleration magnitudes of 0.1g, 0.15g, and 0.2 g were applied, and long-period and short-period seismic waves were applied. As a result of the analysis according to the assumed ground characteristics and structure size, the horizontal displacement at the reinforced section was reduced by about 9%, and the long-period seismic wave had a 95% larger displacement than the short-period seismic wave. In addition, an increase in acceleration of 0.1g resulted in a displacement of about 50%, and a large increase in displacement was observed in long-period seismic waves. As a result of the analysis, in the case of the compression-only bridge seismic reinforcement method, there was a reinforcing effect, so the field applicability was excellent.

  • This paper proposes a Modified Particle Swarm Optimization with Time Varying Acceleration Coefficients (MPSO-TVAC) for solving economic load dispatch (ELD) problem. Due to prohibited operating zones (POZ) and ramp rate limits of the practical generators, the ELD problems become nonlinear and nonconvex optimization problem. Furthermore, the ELD problem may be more complicated if transmission losses are considered. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the famous heuristic methods for solving nonconvex problems. However, this method may suffer to trap at local minima especially for multimodal problem. To improve the solution quality and robustness of PSO algorithm, a new best neighbour particle called 'rbest' is proposed. The rbest provides extra information for each particle that is randomly selected from other best particles in order to diversify the movement of particle and avoid premature convergence. The effectiveness of MPSO-TVAC algorithm is tested on different power systems with POZ, ramp-rate limits and transmission loss constraints. To validate the performances of the proposed algorithm, comparative studies have been carried out in terms of convergence characteristic, solution quality, computation time and robustness. Simulation results found that the proposed MPSO-TVAC algorithm has good solution quality and more robust than other methods reported in previous work.

  • Mode superposition method(MSM) is the most commonly used for solving linear response problems of structural dynamics. The major advantage of MSM is that usually a small number of lower mode is sufficient to analysis the response. However, the convergence is slow and many modes would be needed to give an accurate MSM in large structure with many degrees of freedom. The inaccuracies of MSM are caused by mode truncation in the solution. These demerits can be overcome by use of the mode acceleration method(MAM). Example analyses are carried out in simple beam subjected to harmonic loadings and compared the convergence of the joint displacements by the two methods. For relatively low frequency loadings, a good results was obtained by the lowest one mode in MAM, so the method is more economic in numerical analysis on an accurate solution.

  • The response characteristics of the forced vibration generated when the high-damped vehicle pass the bumped barrier was studied, and in particular, the response behavior of displacement, velocity and acceleration was analyzed for the forced vibration model. In addition, in order to obtain responses such as displacement, velocity, and acceleration, a numerical analysis technique of the Runge-Kutta-Gill method was performed in time domain. The response was successfully obtained in detail under several high damping conditions. As a numerical analysis result, the response of the vehicle was obtained by considering the vehicle body to which the impulse impact was applied. Also, the analysis result was compared with the experimental result in order to verify the validity of vehicle model. The amplitude and natural frequency of the vehicle were considered and analyzed. The Nyquist diagram of the vehicle model was also obtained and the relationship could be analyzed. And the vibration response was analyzed on different mass, damping and stiffness.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to improve texture recognition performance from haptic acceleration signals representing the texture characteristics of object surface materials by using a Conformer model that combines the advantages of a convolutional neural network and a transformer. In the proposed method, three-axis acceleration signals generated by impact sound and vibration are combined into one-dimensional acceleration data while a person contacts the surface of the object materials using a tool such as a stylus , and the logarithmic Mel-spectrogram is extracted from the haptic acceleration signal similar to the audio signal. Then, Conformer is applied to the extracted the logarithmic Mel-spectrogram to learn main local and global frequency features in recognizing the texture of various object materials. Experiments on the Lehrstuhl für Medientechnik (LMT) haptic texture dataset consisting of 60 materials to evaluate the performance of the proposed model showed that the proposed method can effectively recognize the texture of the object surface material better than the existing methods.

  • To the elderly, sudden falls are one of the most frightening accidents. If an accident occurs, a prompt action has to be taken to deal with the situation. Recently, there have been a number of attempts to detect sudden falls using acceleration sensors embedded in the mobile devices, such as smart phones and wrist-bands. However, using the sensor readings only, the detection rate of the falls is around 65%. Ordinary daily activities such as running or jumping could not be well distinguished from the falls. In this paper, we describe our attempts on improving the fall-detection rate. We implemented a wrist-band fall detection module, using a three-axis acceleration sensor. With the pattern matching on the fall signal-strength frequency spectrum, in addition to the conventional signal strength measurement, we could improve the detection rate by 9% point. Furthermore, by applying two wrist-bands in the experiment, we could further improve the detection rate to 82%.

  • For high volume manufacturing using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, mask protection from contamination during lithography process must be solved, and EUV pellicle is the strongest solution. Based on the technical requirements of EUV pellicle, EUV pellicle should have large membrane area ($110{\times}140mm^2$) with film transmittance over 90% and mechanical stability. Even though pellicle that satisfies size standard with high transmittance has been reported, its mechanical stability has not been confirmed, nor is there a standard to evaluate the mechanical stability. In this study, we suggest a rather simple method evaluating mechanical stability of pellicle membrane using spin-coater which can emulate the linear accelerated motion. The test conditions were designed by simulating the acceleration distribution inside pellicle membrane through correlating the linear acceleration and centripetal acceleration, which occurs during linear movement and rotation movement, respectively. By these simulation results, we confirmed the possibility of using spin-coater to evaluate the mechanical stability of EUV pellicle.

  • As a preprocessing operation of transmitter antennas, the hybrid precoding is restricted by the limited computing resources of the transmitter. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel hybrid precoding that guarantees the communication efficiency with low complexity and a fast computational speed. First, the analog and digital precoding matrix is derived from the maximum eigenvectors of the channel matrix in the sub-connected architecture to maximize the communication rate. Second, the extended power iteration (EPI) is utilized to obtain the maximum eigenvalues and their eigenvectors of the channel matrix, which reduces the computational complexity caused by the singular value decomposition (SVD). Third, the Aitken acceleration method is utilized to further improve the convergence rate of the EPI algorithm. Finally, the hybrid precoding based on the EPI method and the Aitken acceleration algorithm is evaluated in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity with the high performance in mmWave massive MIMO systems. The method has the wide application prospect in future wireless communication systems.
