  • This paper presents a hybrid method for recognizing the faces by using zero mean and principal component analysis. Zero mean is applied to reduce the 1st order statistics to data nonlinearities. PCA is also used to derive an orthonormal basis which directly leads to dimensionality reduction, and possibly to feature extraction of face image. The proposed method has been applied to the problems for recognizing the 20 face images(10 persons * 2 scenes) of 324*243 pixels from Yale face database. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances(speed, rate). The negative angle has been relatively achieved more an accurate similarity than city-block or Euclidean.

  • This paper studies the sensitivity analysis of an infrared rays (IR) sensor (SHARP-GD2D12) with bluetooth communication. To evaluate the performance of the IR sensor-bluetooth module, the distance and angle data between the sensor and the fixed object are measured with an IR sensor and the measured data are transferred to PC via bluetooth within 100 meters. This experiment shows that the IR sensor-bluetooth system can be used to measure the distance and angle for a fixed object within 100 meters.

  • This paper presents a hybrid method for recognizing the faces by using principal component analysis(PCA) and fixed-point independent component analysis(FP-ICA). PCA is used to whiten the data, which reduces the effects of second-order statistics to the nonlinearities. FP-ICA is applied to extract the statistically independent features of face image. The proposed method has been applied to the problems for recognizing the 20 face images(10 persons * 2 scenes) of 324*243 pixels from Yale face database. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. • When a flexible arm is rotated by a motor about an axis through the arm's fixed end, transverse vibration may occur. The motor torque should be controlled in such a way that the motor rotates by a specified angle, while simultaneously stabilizing vibration of the flexible arm so that it is arrested at the end of rotation. In this paper, we propose nonlinear observer for one-link flexible am. Then based on the error dynamic equation between the plant dynamic equation and the nonlinear observer dynamic equation of the flexible one-link am, Lyapunov candidate function is applied to achieve a stable deterministic nonlinear feedback controller for the regulation of joint angle.

  • Orthodontic treatment is accomplished by attaching an archwire to a bracket on tooth. The shape of the archwire is usually planned from 3-D scanned data of patient's teeth. It is manufactured by bending a metal wire and there have been some researches in progress to automate it. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain the bending angle at the bending point from the shape data of the archwire and verify it by simulation using actual archwire data.

  • This paper reports a side-coupled asymmetric $1{\times}2$ plastic optical fiber coupler for an optical sensor system. The dependence of the optical power coupling ratio on the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer in both the forward and backward directions was examined based on the geometrical optics. It was confirmed experimentally that the coupling ratios can be optimized by controlling the coupling angle and refractive index of the adhesion layer. A maximum forward coupling efficiency > 93% was achieved.

  • We carry out numerical simulations of the responses of planar metamaterials composed of metamolecules under obliquely incident terahertz waves. A Fano-like-resonant planar metamaterial, with two types of resonance modes originating from the two meta-atoms constituting the meta-molecules, exhibits high performance in terms of resonance strength, as well as the outstanding ability to manipulate the resonance frequency by varying the incident angle of the terahertz waves. In the structure, the fundamental electric dipole resonance associated with Y-shaped meta-atoms is highly tunable, whereas the inductive-capacitive resonance of C-shaped meta-atoms is relatively omnidirectional. This is attributed to the electric near-field coupling between the two types of meta-atoms. Our work provides novel opportunities for realizing terahertz devices with versatile functions, and for improving the versatility of terahertz sensing and imaging systems.

  • The notion of leisure has changed with industrial development and improvement in life quality. Bicycling is a healthy sport; it is an exercise performed while enjoying nature. There have been many changes in the materials that are used to manufacture the bicycle frame. Iron and aluminum have been mainly used in bicycle frames. However, carbon-based materials are lighter and stronger than metal frames. The bicycles made of carbon composite changes frame rigidity depending on the direction of the carbon sheet sacking angle. We study the direction of composite material and how they affect the stiffness of frames based on the stacking angle.

  • Gait analysis plays a key role in the research field of exploring and understanding human movement. By quantitatively analyzing the complexity of human movement and the various factors that influence it, it is possible to identify individual gait characteristics and abnormalities. This is especially true for people with walking difficulties or special circumstances, such as amputee, for example. This is because it can help us understand their gait characteristics and provide individualized rehabilitation plans. In this paper, we compare and analyze the differences in ankle joint motion and angles between normal and amputee. In particular, a filtering process was applied to the ankle joint angle data to obtain high accuracy results. The results of this study can contribute to a more accurate understanding and improvement of the gait patterns of normal and amputee.

  • This study presents a novel safe landing algorithm for urban drone deliveries. The rapid advancement of drone technology has given rise to various delivery services for everyday necessities and emergency relief efforts. However, the reliability of drone delivery technology is still insufficient for application in urban environments. The proposed approach uses the "landing angle control" method to allow the drone to land vertically and a rapidly exploring random tree-based collision avoidance algorithm to generate safe and efficient vertical landing paths for drones while avoiding common urban obstacles like trees, street lights, utility poles, and wires; these methods allow for precise and reliable urban drone delivery. We verified the approach within a Gazebo simulation operated through ROS using a six-degree-of-freedom drone model and sensors with similar specifications to actual models. The performance of the algorithms was tested in various scenarios by comparing it with that of stateof-the-art 3D path planning algorithms.
