  • Despite the fact that traffic engineering techniques have been comprehensively utilized in the past to enhance the performance of communication networks, the distinctive characteristics of Software Defined Networking (SDN) demand new traffic engineering techniques for better traffic control and management. Considering the behavior of traffic, large flows normally carry out transfers of large blocks of data and are naturally packet latency insensitive. However, small flows are often latency-sensitive. Without intelligent traffic engineering, these small flows may be blocked in the same queue behind megabytes of file transfer traffic. So it is very important to identify large flows for different applications. In the scope of this paper, we present an approach to detect large flows in real-time without even a short delay. After the detection of large flows, the next problem is how to control these large flows effectively and prevent network jam. In order to address this issue, we propose an approach in which when the controller is enabled, the large flow is mitigated the moment it hits the predefined threshold value in the control application. This real-time detection, marking, and controlling of large flows will assure an optimize usage of an overall network.

  • Air Traffic Management(ATM) is to control air traffic flow quickly and safely. For efficient ATM, the ability which calculate optimal route using filight plan and filght information is required. Especially for the time-sensitive air cargo, it is essential. In this paper, therefore, we present a dynamic route search algorithm which calculate optimal route dynamically. The conventional method using Dijkstra algorithm has a problem that recalculate the entire route when some airways are closed. However, the proposed algorithm recalculates only affected waypoints, so it finds optimal route quickly and accurately. Comparisons with the conventional method and the proposed algorithm show that the proposed algorithm provides better.

  • This paper summarizes the HVO concept and procedures, presents a summary of the research and results, and outlines areas where future HVO is required. This concept enables people to get their destinations through shortest paths with advanced air traffic control system and equipments. The concept's key feature is that pilots maintain their own separation from other aircraft using air-to-air datalink and on-board software which are needed for supporting flight information present on the high Way in the sky display and airborne internet. By assigning Self-Controlled Area which assume pilot have separation responsibility, controllers evaluated SATS HVO concept as a successful method on the view of reduced workload and increased traffic level on high volume operation.

  • Urbanization brings many challenges such as traffic, housing, and environment. To solve these problems, researchers are working on new transportation systems like urban air mobility (UAM). UAM aircraft should fly safely without burdening the existing air traffic system in the early stage of low-density operation. The airspace should also be managed and operated efficiently. Therefore it is important to make urban air traffic predictable by using corridors and collecting data on low-density operations in the early stage. For this purpose various simulations are needed before operation to create scenarios that estimate potential collisions between UAM aircraft and to evaluate the risks of aircraft spacing, loss of separation (LoS), and near mid air collision (NMAC). This paper focuses on identifying the requirements and considerations for setting separation standards for urban air traffic based on the results of studies.

  • The air traffic control service in the domestic airports and approach control centers is provided using data from flight plan and a variety of surveillance sensors such as SSR, ADS-B and MLAT, etc. The physical connection methods and data types of the sensors are various, as so using these data directly may cause a lot of cost in development and maintenance of air traffic control equipment. As a method for solving such a problem, we propose a system that can convert the data from the heterogeneous sensors to the unified format which can be processed by the air traffic control devices. In this paper, the analysis results for the physical characteristics and data formats of the typical surveillance sensors are described. Also, the system design and the system implementation result for the multi-sensor interface system to interoperate the sensors are explained in detail.

  • In this paper, we discuss a novel reservation-based, asynchronous MAC protocol called 'Multi-rate Multi-hop MAC Protocol' (MMMP) for multi-hop ad hoc networks that provides QoS guarantees for multimedia traffic. MMMP achieves this by providing service differentiation for multirate real-time traffic (both constant and variable bit rate traffic) and guaranteeing a bounded end-to-end delay for the same while still catering to the throughput requirements of non real time traffic. In addition, it administers bandwidth preservation via a feature called 'Smart Drop' and implements efficient bandwidth usage through a mechanism called 'Release Bandwidth'. Simulation results on the QualNet simulator indicate that MMMP outperforms IEEE 802.11 on all performance metrics and can efficiently handle a large range of traffic intensity. It also outperforms other similar state-of-the-art MAC protocols.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out what is the functional role of VTS in order to get the people concerned with marine traffic/transportation understand about VTS. VTS could be described as the essential risk management system in both cost effective on cost-benefit analysis and the sea space or time management at port, coastal environment. The important role of the VTS are those functions such as the decision making infrastructure, the passive/active safety measures at sea. VTS could not control/regulate marine traffic as strong as ATC(Air Traffic Control) owing to the marine traffic characters. However, the right and responsibility of VTS finally are belong to the master, pilot and mariners. For the benefit of the electronic technology development, VTS system also cloud be upgraded to communication system from information system. In connection with these system upgrading, the right and responsibility of VTS/staff should be supported by domestic legal system. The followings are presented for VTS to be effective. First, the cooperation and understanding of VTS between the peoples concerned with marine traffic/transportation are essential. Because they are all data supplier and also information consumers. Second, VTS staff/regulator should be selected, educated, trained accordingly as per their career, ability, quality, qualification, certification and etc. Third, the port reliability from VTS users depends on the factors such as economic interests, safety and effectiveness/efficiency of VTS.

  • With rapid growth in the technologies and demand of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPASs), integration of such systems into the existing airspace system is becoming an issue in many countries. RPAS have different flight performances, communication characteristics, separation assurance mechanisms, and human machine interfaces from manned aircraft. To establish rules and regulations for RPAS integration, it is important to understand the impacts of RPASs on the airspace system. A simulation system that integrates manned aircraft, air traffic control, and RPASs is developed in Inha University to investigate these impacts through Human-in-The-Loop (HiTL) simulations. Three conflict resolution scenarios between a manned aircraft and a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) were constructed and tested. Human factors such as the response times of pilots and controllers were measured and analyzed as well as the risk of each maneuver.
