A Passive Control of Interaction of Condensation Shock Wave anc Boundary Layer(II) (응축충격파와 경계층 간섭의 피동제어(II))

  • A passive control of interaction of condensation shock wave / boundary layer for reducing the strength of condensation shock was conducted experimentally in a 2.5 * 8 cm$^{2}$ indraft type supersonic wind tunnel. The effects of following factors on passive control were investigated: 1) the thickness of porous wall, 2) the diameter of porous hole, and 3) the orientation of porous hole. On the other hand, the location of nonequilibrium condensation region and condensation shock wave was controlled by regulation of the stagnation conditions. Surface static pressure measurements as well as Schlieren observations of the flow field were obtained, and their effects were compared with the results the cases of without passive control. It was found that thinner porous wall, smaller porous hole and FFH orientation for the same cavity size and porosity of 12% are more favourable than the cases of its opposite.

  • Passive control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction control utilizing slotted plates over a cavity has been carried out. Effect of various slot configurations on the characteristics of the interactions are tested. Pitot/wall surface pressure distributions and flow visualizations including Schlierens and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film have been obtained at the downstream of the shock interactions. It was found that the interaction control by a certain slot-configuration could lead a reduction of the total pressure loss through the shock wave, however, the boundary layer thickness became thicker as compared with the case of no control.

  • An experimental study was carried out to control a shock-induced boundary layer separation by utilizing the supersonic sweeping jet from the fluidic oscillator. High-speed schlieren, surface flow visualization, wall pressure measurement and precise Pitot tube measurement were applied to observe the influences of the location and the supply pressure of the fluidic oscillator on the characteristics of the oblique-shock-induced boundary layer separation. The characteristics of the separation control by the present supersonic fluidic oscillator was quantitatively analyzed by comparing with a conventional control method utilizing an air-jet vortex generator.

  • A helical vane is applied to reduce the magnitude of the impulse wave discharged from the exit of a duct. A shock tube with an open end is used to investigate the effect of the helical vanes on the impulse wave magnitude. Four different types of helical vanes are installed into the low-pressure tube of shock tube. The magnitude of the incident shock wave is varied below 1.25, and the magnitude of impulse wave is measured using a pressure transducer mounted on a wedge probe. Instant images of the impulse wave are obtained by means of the Schlieren optical method. The present experimental results show that the helical vane considerably reduces the magnitude of the impulse wave and the vane effects are more remarkable for stronger incident shock wave.

  • Nonlinear aeroelastic characteristics of a missile control surface are investigated in this study. The wing model has freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are also considered in high-speed flow region. To effectively consider a freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method (FMM) is applied to structural vibration analysis based on finite element method (FEM). (omitted)

  • In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 transoni $c^ersonic compressor cascade flow. First, the general characteristics of baseline cascade flow were analyzed. At freestream Mach n.1.612 and exit/inlet pressure ratio 2.15, the results from current laminar flow were compared well in suction surface with the experiment; however, not well in pressure surface. Second, numerical study of the transoni $c^ersonic compressor cascade flow demonstrated the effectiveness of a passive control by the various size cavities. A cavity under the shock foot point at the suction surface of the blades was used as a passive control. The passive control of shock-boundary layer interaction by a cavity reduced total pressure losses. The effect of cavity length and depth was studied. The total pressure loss was reduced by about 10% and the isentropic efficiency was improved slightly. The effect of cavity depth in current study(d/l = 0.05, 0.02) was not found strong. Further adequate turbulence modeling and TVD schemes would help to capture the shock more accurately and increase the effectiveness of the current shock-boundary layer interaction study using upwind flux difference splitting computational methods.thods.

Experimental Study on Cushioning Characteristics of Pneumatic Cylinder with Meter-In/Meter-Out Control

  • Pneumatic cylinder is widely used fur mechanical handling systems. Often, the impact occurs at the both ends points of pneumatic cylinder and generates the destructive shock with in the structural operating members of the machine or equipment. To reduce the damage of system, therefore, shock absorbing devices are required. Cushioning of pneumatic cylinders at one or both ends of piston stroke is used to reduce the shock and vibration. The cylinder body have to withstand under conditions of high velocity and load. In this research pneumatic cushioning cylinder moving tests have been conducted for different load mass and supply pressure. The velocity of pneumatic cylinder actuation system which is set vertically with multiple orifice cushion sleeve is controled with the meter-in/out control system. This study examines the dynamic characteristics of pneumatic cylinder which are used as cushion devices. It turns out that the cushion pressure is mainly a function of the external load rather than the supply pressure. The cushion region characteristics was also revealed in the meter-in control system.

Effects of Slot Configurations on the Passive Control of Oblique-Shock-Interaction Flows (슬롯 형상이 경사충격파 간섭유동의 피동제어에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

Effect of various slot configurations on the characteristics of the interaction has been observed. Pitot/wall surface pressure distributions and flow visualizations including Schlieren images, kerosene-lampblack tracings and interference fringe patterns over a thin oil-film have been obtained at the downstream of the shock interactions. For the streamwise-slot configuration, a local higher pitot pressure was noticed at the downstream of the interaction as compared with the case of no control, however, not much improvement in pitot pressure was observed for the spanwise-slot configuration.

Study on the Passive Shock/Boundary Layer Interaction Control in Transonic Moist Air Flow (습공기 유동에서 발생하는 충격파와 경계층 간섭의 피동제어에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, a passive control method, using a porous wall and cavity system, is applied to the shock wave/boundary layer interactions in transonic moist air flow. The two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation, are solved by the third-order MUSCL type TVD finite difference scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is employed to close the governing equations. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the present control method, the total pressure loss of the flow and the time-dependent behaviour of shock motions are analyzed in detail. The computed results show that the present passive control method considerably reduces the total pressure losses due to the shock wave/boundary layer interaction in transonic moist air flow and suppresses the unsteady shock wave motions over the airfoil as well. It is also found that the location of the porous ventilation significantly affects the control effectiveness.

  • Analyzing internal structure, flow rate and dynamic behavior characteristics of electronically controlled shock absorber, damping performance limit is identified to comprise the two reciprocal characteristics of ride comfort and handling safety. Regardless of its lower performance than the active suspension control system, the semi-active suspension control system has been taking interest because of its absolutely higher performance than passive suspension system. Since the pervious studies have been concentrated mostly on analytic aspect and survey on the internal structure of the shock absorber remain insufficient, the main discourse of this paper is focused on analyzing the nonlinear shock absorber which varies the damping force of semi-active suspension system and the dynamic characteristics of the solenoid valve, a sort of pressure valve, and proposing the design factors of importance.
