The enforcement and its effect of weight control program including nutrition education, exercise and behavioral modification therapy during 20 weeks were studied in primary school obese children. The sample consisted of treatment group(n=19) and control group (n=23). To evaluate the effects of weight control program, treatment group took pretest and posttest for nutrition knowledge, attitude and food habits. Nutrient intakes, serum lipid levels and anthropometric values were also measured. After weight control program, body weight of treatment group significantly decreased from 47.0$\pm$9.0kg to 45.9$\pm$8.5kg(p<0.001), but than of control group increased from 47.8$\pm$8.1kg to 49.0$\pm$8.7kg (p$\leq$0.05). Obesity index showed decline of 8.6% for treatment group and gain of 0.7% for control group. After self-control period, body weight and relate index in both groups were increased. For the nutrition knowledge test results, the posttest mean scores of treatment group showed the significant increase(p<0.001). For the attitude toward nutrition and food habit results, the posttest mean scores increased significantly (p<0.05, p<0.01). There was a decline of 28% in serum triglycerides, whereas serum total cholesterol increased 11% of baseline. These findings suggest that well-combined weight control program for obese children may result in a substantial loss of body weight during 14 weeks. In addition, these reuslts indicate that weight redution through weight control program can be a viable approach to help normalize serum lipids in obese children. Finally, these data suggest that it may be important to identify that affect weight loss and maintenance, and to examine how to manipulate these factors in weight control program.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a health education program to improve knowledge about environmental health and allergy symptoms among elementary school students. Methods: This study has nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Purpose: This study was done to investigate nurses' knowledge of, and compliance with the multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infection control guidelines. Methods: A survey questionnaire was developed based on the institutional and national guidelines and was administered to a convenience sample of 306 nurses in a university hospital. Results: The mean score for knowledge was 33.87 (percentage of correct answers: 82.61%). The percentages of correct answers for basic concepts, route of transmission, hand washing/protective devices and environment management were 74.27%, 94.29%, 92.90% and 75.54% respectively. The mean compliance score was 4.15 (range: 1-5). The compliance scores for education, communication, contact precaution, disinfection, surveillance culture, and hand washing were 3.29, 4.05, 4.20, 4.50, 4.40 and 4.48 respectively. Nurses indicated "lack of time (30.06%)", "lack of means (10.78%)" and "lack of knowledge (9.48%)" as reasons for noncompliance. Conclusion: While most educational programs have focused on hand washing or use of protective devices to prevent transmission of MDRO in acute care settings, hospital nurses' knowledge of the basic concepts of MDRO and environmental management has remained insufficient. Nurses are relatively non-compliant to the guidelines in the areas of education (staff, patient, family) and communication. Comprehensive educational programs are needed to decrease hospital infection rates and to improve the health of patients.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a hands-on training regarding maritime safety including abandon ship and fire-fighting as related to sea survival, fire-fighting knowledge and emergency response leadership in seafarers engaged on a seagoing ship. The study was conducted with a nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design. Two hundred-sixty-six participants were assigned to either the experimental group(128) or control group(138). The hands-on training regarding maritime safety included sea survival and fire fighting drill, and it was implemented with the experimental group for two days from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. Data was analyzed using chi-square, t-test and ANCOVA by using IBM SPSS Statistics(version 24) program. The experimental group who had the hands-on training showed significantly higher sea survival knowledge(F=902.32, p<.001), shipboard fire-fighting knowledge(F=1013.76, p<.001) and emergency response leadership(F=1802.62, p<.001) for maritime safety compared with the control group who had traditional education. The results indicate that a hands-on training is an effective teaching method to improve sea survival, fire-fighting knowledge and emergency response leadership in seafarers engaged. Further study is needed to identify the effect of a hands-on training regarding maritime safety according to the environmental changes of seafarers.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate how a program using video-audio media will affect the knowledge level and compliance of the sick role of patients admitted for coronary angiography. Method: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Subjects were selected from patients admitted to the internal ward of a hospital in B city for coronary angiography between July 1 and September 31, 2010. Twenty subjects were assigned to the control and experimental group, respectively. Video-audio media developed by the authors was used as the experimental tool. The effects of the program were analyzed using a knowledge assessment tool and questionnaire for compliance of the sick role. The SPSS/WIN 14.0 program was used for data analysis. Result: The first hypothesis that the "experimental group receiving the program using video-audio media will report a higher level of knowledge compared to the control group" was supported. The second hypothesis that the "experimental group that received the program using video-audio media will report a higher level of compliance of sick role" was supported. Conclusion: The program using video-audio media was effective in enhancing patients' knowledge about the disease and compliance of the sick role. Thus, it can be an effective nursing intervention for patients with coronary artery disease.
Purpose : The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships between knowledge, awareness, safe environment, and performance of standard precautions and identify factors associated with performance of standard precautions. Methods : This study was a descriptive research. A structured questionnaire on knowledge, awareness, safe environment, and performance of standard precautions was used for the survey with a convenience sample of 150 caregivers. Data were collected from July to August 2019 and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results : The mean scores on knowledge, awareness, safe environment, and performance of standard precautions were 15.77±3.34, 7.35±1.91, 4.55±2.05, and 55.20±10.11 respectively. Performance of standard precautions showed a statistically significant positive correlation with knowledge (r=.54, p<.001), awareness (r=.54, p<.001), and safe environment (r=.50, p<.001). Awareness (β=.24, p=.025) and safe environment (β=.35, p<.001) were significantly associated with factors of performance of standard precautions. Also, education level (high school and above college), affiliated institution (private association), and importance of infection control education (moderate) were significantly associated with factors of performance of standard precautions. Conclusion : The results of the study indicate that factors influencing the performance of standard precautions of caregivers were awareness and safe environment. Therefore, to improve implementation of the standard precautions among caregivers, a safe environment within the hospital must be supported, and appropriate infection management education needs to be provided to caregivers to improve their knowledge and awareness of the standard precautions.
