Frequency-Cepstral Features for Bag of Words Based Acoustic Context Awareness (Bag of Words 기반 음향 상황 인지를 위한 주파수-캡스트럴 특징)

  • Among acoustic signal analysis tasks, acoustic context awareness is one of the most formidable tasks in terms of complexity since it requires sophisticated understanding of individual acoustic events. In conventional context awareness methods, individual acoustic event detection or recognition is employed to generate a relevant decision on the impending context. However this approach may produce poorly performing decision results in practical situations due to the possibility of events occurring simultaneously or the acoustically similar events that are difficult to distinguish with each other. Particularly, the babble noise acoustic event occurring at a bus or subway environment may create confusion to context awareness task since babbling is similar in any environment. Therefore in this paper, a frequency-cepstral feature vector is proposed to mitigate the confusion problem during the situation awareness task of binary decisions: bus or metro. By employing the Support Vector Machine (SVM) as the classifier, the proposed feature vector scheme is shown to produce better performance than the conventional scheme.

An analysis of the writing tasks in high school English textbooks: Focusing on genre, rhetorical structure, task types, and authenticity (고등학교 1학년 영어교과서 쓰기활동 과업 분석: 장르, 텍스트 전개구조, 활동 유형, 진정성을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the writing tasks included in the newly developed high school English textbooks in the aspects of genre, rhetorical structure, task type, and authenticity in order to find out whether these tasks could contribute to improving Korean EFL students' writing skills. A total of nine textbooks were selected for the study and every writing task in each textbook was analyzed. The results show that various types of genres were incorporated in the tasks, but very few opportunities were provided for students to acquire characteristics of specific genres. In terms of rhetorical structure of text, narration, illustration, and transaction were required most, whereas not a single writing task asked students to use classification or cause and effect. Many of the writing tasks analyzed offered linguistic and/or content support through the use of models, which displays traces of the product-based approach to teaching writing. Lastly, most of the tasks lacked authenticity represented by explicit discussion of purpose and audience. Implications for L2 writing task development and writing instruction in the Korean EFL context are discussed.

  • The ubiquitous environment is to support people in their everyday life in an inconspicuous and unobtrusive way. This environment requires information such as the person, his/her preferences, and habits which is available in the ubiquitous system. In this paper, we propose the context aware system that can provide the tailored information service for user in ubiquitous computing environment. Our system architecture is divided into 4 domain models such as context awareness, presentation, interface and inference domain. Each domain model can perform some predefined tasks independently. And we suggest the hybrid algorithm combined with fuzzy and Bayesian method in order to reason what is the suitable information for user. We show the possibility for the real application through applying the system to the TGA (Tour Guide Assistant) for Kyoungju historical site.

Aggressive Slack Reclamation for Soft Real-Time Task Scheduling (연성 실시간 태스크들의 스케줄링을 위한 적극적인 슬랙 재활용)

  • In scheduling of real-time tasks, the required hardware performance for a given set of tasks is determined based on the worst case execution time. For soft real-time tasks as multimedia applications, a lower performance hardware can service the tasks. Since the execution time of a task can vary in time, we can reclaim the slacks of early completed tasks for those of longer than average execution times. Then, the average ratio of deadline-miss can be lowered. This paper presents an algorithm, Aggressive Slack Reclamation (ASR), that tasks share slacks aggressively. A simulation result shows that ASR enhances the deadline-miss ratio and number of context switches than previous results.

Visual Search Model based on Saliency and Scene-Context in Real-World Images (실제 이미지에서 현저성과 맥락 정보의 영향을 고려한 시각 탐색 모델)

  • According to much research on cognitive science, the impact of the scene-context on human visual search in real-world images could be as important as the saliency. Therefore, this study proposed a method of Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) modeling of visual search in real-world images, based on saliency and scene-context. The modeling method was developed by using the utility system of ACT-R to describe influences of saliency and scene-context in real-world images. Then, the validation of the model was performed, by comparing the data of the model and eye-tracking data from experiments in simple task in which subjects search some targets in indoor bedroom images. Results show that model data was quite well fit with eye-tracking data. In conclusion, the method of modeling human visual search proposed in this study should be used, in order to provide an accurate model of human performance in visual search tasks in real-world images.

Sentence model based subword embeddings for a dialog system

  • This study focuses on improving a word embedding model to enhance the performance of downstream tasks, such as those of dialog systems. To improve traditional word embedding models, such as skip-gram, it is critical to refine the word features and expand the context model. In this paper, we approach the word model from the perspective of subword embedding and attempt to extend the context model by integrating various sentence models. Our proposed sentence model is a subword-based skip-thought model that integrates self-attention and relative position encoding techniques. We also propose a clustering-based dialog model for downstream task verification and evaluate its relationship with the sentence-model-based subword embedding technique. The proposed subword embedding method produces better results than previous methods in evaluating word and sentence similarity. In addition, the downstream task verification, a clustering-based dialog system, demonstrates an improvement of up to 4.86% over the results of FastText in previous research.

Investigating Learners' Perception on Their Engagement in Rating Procedures

  • This study investigates learners' perception on their engagement in rating activities in the EFL essay-writing context. The current study aims to address the answers to the following research questions: 1) What attitude do students show about their participation in the rating tasks? and 2) which of three aspects (e.g. the degree of rating experience, the exposure to English composition instruction and learning, and proficiency level) significantly influences learners' rating activities? 104 EFL learners participated in the rater training session. After participants finished rater training session, they rated three sample essays and peer essays using the given scoring guide. Based on the analysis of survey responses that students made, students showed positive attitude toward their engagement in rating tasks. For research question 2, only L2 writing proficiency seriously affected students' perception on the rating tasks. Advanced level of subjects did not feel stressed by a grade of peers as low level of subjects did. They were also critical about the benefits of self- and peer-assessment, suggesting that a peer's feedback on their own essay was not so useful and that a self-rating does not fully help learners identify their writing proficiency.

Development and Application of the Scientific Inquiry Tasks for Small Group Argumentation (소집단의 논변활동을 위한 과학 탐구 과제의 개발과 적용)

  • In this study, we developed tasks including cognitive scaffolding for students to explain scientific phenomena using valid evidences in science classroom and sought to investigate how tasks influence the development of small group scientific argumentation. Heterogeneous small groups in gender and achievement were organized in one classroom and the tasks were applied to the class. Students were asked to write down their own ideas, share individual ideas, and then choose the most plausible opinion in a group. One group was chosen for investigating the effect of tasks on the development of small group argumentation through the analysis of discourse transcripts of the group in 10 lessons, students' semi-structured interview, field note, and students' pre- and post argument tests. The discrepant argument examples were included in the tasks for students to refute an argument presenting evidences. Moreover, comparing opinion within the group and persuading others were included in the tasks to prompt small group argumentation. As a result, students' post-argument test grades were increased than pre-test grades, and they argued involving evidences and reasoning. The high level of arguments has appeared with high ratio of advanced utterances and lengthening of reasoning chain as lessons went on. Students had elaborate claims involving valid evidences and reasoning by reflective and critical thinking while discussing about the tasks. In addition, tasks which could have various warrants based on the data led to students' spontaneous participation. Therefore, this study has significance in understanding the context of developing small group argumentation, providing information about teaching and learning context prompting students to construct arguments in science inquiry lessons in middle school.

A Study of User Experience Based on Feedback Positioning of Home Robots and Approach-Avoidance Behaviors: Focused on the Context of Tasks (가정용 로봇의 피드백 움직임과 접근-회피 행동에 따른 사용자 경험 연구: 작업 수행 상황을 중심으로)

  • Due to pandemic situations, the development of home robots that can make the house an optimized space for various activities is active. This study aims to confirm the effectiveness of approach or avoidance behavior for feedback positioning on the user experience, depending on the context in which the robot performs the task. Based on two types of the task contexts(Reactive vs. Proactive) and three types of robot feedback positioning(No move vs. Avoidance vs. Approach), six different scenarios were designed for experimental study. Likeability, perceived intelligence, rapport, negative attitude and predictability of behavior are measured for each conditions. The result showed the main effects of perceived intelligence, rapport, predictability in the context of tasks, and of likability, perceived intelligence, rapport in robot feedback positioning. The interaction effects were shown in likeability and perceived intelligence. In conclusion, approach-avoidance experiences can also be applied to robot behaviors as well, and the negative effects of avoidance have been significantly confirmed.
