The permeability of contaminated soil and elapsed time are important considering factors to in-situ soil remadiation. Gabr et. al. (1996) derived the solution equation of contaminant concentration ratio as initial one (C/$C_0$) with time and spatial changes in contaminated area which embedded with vertical drains. The contaminant concentration ratio (C/$C_0$) is analyzed with time and spatial changes in three different permeability areas which are $k=l.0{\times}10^{-5,}$$l.0{\times}l0^{-6,}$$l.0{\times}l0^{-7}\;_{m/s}$ by using the Gabr's equation. Results from numerical analysis indicate that the ratio (C/$C_0$) decreases as the elapsed time increases in every point, however, remediation efficiency decreases as the analyzing point is far from injection well to extraction one and is deeper from top level of contaminated area. And also it decreases as the permeability of contaminated area decreases. Especially, the lower permeability of contaminated area effects directly on the soil remediation, in this research, under condition which the permeability of contaminated area is $l.0{\times}l0^{-7}\;_{m/s}$, the maximum time needed to attain 90% clean up level ($t_{90}$) is 65,690 hours(7.5 years), it takes so much time to clean the low permeability contaminated soil.
The objective of this study was to evaluate petroleum hydrocarbon degradation processes governing natural attenuation at tile contaminated site and accomplished through conducting on investigation of degradation rate, capacity, and mechanism of the monitored natural attenuation. The monitoring results of the three years indicated that the concentrations of DO, nitrate, and sulfate in the contaminated area were significantly lower than these in the none-contaminated area. The results also showed a higher ferrous iron concentration, a lower redox potential and a neutral pH in the contaminated groundwater, suggesting that biodegradation of TEX is the major on-going process in the contaminated area. However, reduction of TEX in the groundwater was not only biodegradation but also dilution and reaeration during infiltration of uncotaminated surface and groudwater.
In-situ soil remediation mechanism through the vertical drains (VDs) is analyzed with numerical model as the error and complementary error function. Results from in-situ test and analysis indicate that the contaminant concentration ratio as initial one ( C/$C_0$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) increases from the injection well, and also increases as the depth ratio ( z/ H) increases from the top of contaminated area. The elapse time needed to attain $50\%$ and $90\%$ clean up level ($ t_{50},\;t_{90}$) increases as the radius ratio ( r/R) and the depth ratio ( z/ H) increase. As above results, the procedure of soil flushing in contaminated area using vertical drains makes progress from the top of injection well to the bottom of extraction well.
Oil contamination soil has been one of the most environmental social issues for decades in the inside and outside of country. The law of soil environmental preservation was carried out in the 1990s and the government controlled not only soil environment management and the remediation of contaminated soil but also promoted the development of remedial technology and cleanup business of contaminated soil by national policy. In addition to agriculture areas, the main oil contaminated sites are a gas station, oil reservoir, petro-chemical complex, site of railway carriage base and military camp. The contamination-frequency of agriculture area and effect sites are low but it has significantly important area on account of producing food for human beings. Therefore, we should be concerned about oil contamination damage of agriculture area. The oil contamination damage of agriculture area influenced drop of birth and breeding since the oil directly adheres to seeds and farm products even diffusion of contaminated soil to cultivation area. The studies of the crops and the food vegetation has not enough detailed data caused by the incident of oil contamination. This study investigated the effect of oil in germination and growth of selected plant seeds. In this study, we try to verify whether the oil contamination by accidents on farmland influenced the damage of farm produce and the mutual relation both oil contaminated soil or the vegetation of crops. The impact of oil on plant development was followed by phytotoxicity assessments. The plants exhibited visual symptoms of stress, growth reduction and perturbations in developmental parameters. The increase of the degree of pollution induced more marked effects in plants, likely because of the physical effects of oil. The relationships between the phytotoxicity contents of plants and growth reduction suggest a chemical toxicity of fuel oil. In addition, while cleaned up the contaminated soil under the standard of contaminated soil we examined it was suitable for region standard and it may have practical possibility for fill material of construction of afforestation and molding soil of landfill.
Several kinds of medical materials are supplied and returned or disposed everyday in hospitals. And so, the transportation system has to be planned according to their circulation. This study aimed at clarifying the relation between the stock area in ward and the departments in which the contaminated materials are disposed or recleaned and the utilization of vertical transportation system with regard to contaminated materials. The results are as follows : 1)The stock area/rooms for contaminated materials are dipersed according to their kinds. Several department have relation with the area/rooms in ward. 2)The vertical transportation system for contaminated materials are not reserved and utilized independently in hospitals surveyed. And so, cross contamination can easily occur. Therefore, independent transportation system is required and utilized only for them.
Estimations of porosity and bulk density, particle size analysis of soli samples, tracer test and slug test were performed in a petroleum contaminated area of Kangwon for understanding characteristics of the aquifer. Porosities of the samples were estimated 0.158~0.257, and bulk densities were estimated as $1.73\sim2.10\;g/cm^3$. Majority proportion of the soil samples was 0.5~1.0 mm size. In the soil texture triangle, all samples were distributed at sand area. Uniformity coefficients were estimated as 7.71~10.39, and thus all samples were poorly-sorted. In the tracer test, Darcy velocity was estimated to $4.8\times10^{-6}$ cm/day, effective porosity was 0.175, and longitudinal dispersivity was 0.1 m. According to the slug test, hydraulic conductivities of the test wells were estimated as $2.243\times10^{-2}\sim1.634\times10^{-2}$ cm/sec. These hydrogeologic parameters can be used for efficient remediation design of the petroleum contaminated area.
A risk assessment of environmental media was performed for the inhabitants in the area of the abandoned Nokdong metal mine. Soil, groundwater, and crop samples were collected from September to October 2008 around the mine. After pretreatment of these samples, metal concentrations were measured, and a risk assessment was performed using the Korean soil-contamination risk assessment guidelines. Lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) intake rates were the highest for inhalation of soil dust. The cancer risks from ingestion of As-contaminated groundwater, inhalation of As-, Cd-, and Pb-contaminated soils, and contact of As-contaminated soils exceeded the acceptable risk. The sum of all carcinogenic risks was $9.29{\times}10^{-3}$. The non-carcinogenic risk was highest for ingestion of As-contaminated water (11.0), followed, in descending order, by inhalation of Hg-contaminated soil and ingestion of Pb-contaminated water. Most of the risks were associated with As, Cd, Pb, and Hg contamination, and therefore, these metals were considered to be potential toxic carcinogens and non-carcinogens for humans in this area. In this study, the non-carcinogenic risks of ingestion of contaminated water or crops, as well as those associated with the inhalation of soil dust were observed.
This research suggested the hygienic spatial composition of sell-service restaurants applying HACCP(Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System). The circulation of the food, dishes, waste, workers and customers were each fractionated and arranged according to the hygienic sequence of cooking food in kitchen and process for eating food within the customer space. The spaces were separated by the degree of cleanness(clean area, semi-clean area, contaminated area). After that, hygiene facilities to remove contamination and pass facilities intended to control moving were added at the possible points of cross-contamination in oder to prevent the cross-contamination. For hygienic spatial composition of self-service restaurant, the following should be acknowledged: In the kitchen, spaces in which the food is handled after being heated should be located in the clean area. As of the customer space, spaces where dishes are prepared, food and water is received, and the table hall should be located in the clean area. Food circulation should flow from the contaminated area to the clean area. Food, dishes, waste should be moved through pass facilities so that workers do not have to come and go between other areas of cleanness. Also lockers for private clothes and lockers for uniforms should be separated. Hygiene facilities should be easily accessible so that workers can use them whenever they enter their working area. The contaminated area where dirty dishes are dealed with should be separated from the clean area. Waste should be thrown out without crossing cooking areas. As of customer circulation, the hygiene facility for hand washing should be located near the space where dishes for self-service are placed. The customer circulation should lead customers to leave restaurants after giving back the dirty dishes in the contaminated area.
To investigate the possible applications of plants to remediate heavy-metal-contaminated soil, a pilot experiment was performed for four years in a reclaimed dredging area using two Alnus species, i.e., Alnus firma and Alnus hirsuta. In a comparison of phytomass of the two species at two different planting densities, the phytomass of Alnus planted at low density was twice as high as that of Alnus planted at high density after four years. The Alnus species showed active acclimation to the heavy-metal-contaminated soil in a reclaimed dredging area. A. hirsuta showed greater accumulation of phytomass than A. firma, indicating that it is the better candidate for the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils. In the pilot system, Alnus plants took metals up from the soil in the following order; Pb > Zn > Cu > Cr > As > Cd. Uptake rates of heavy metals per individual phytomass was higher for Alnus spp. planted at low density than those planted at high density in the pilot system. Low plant density resulted in higher heavy metal uptake per plant, but the total heavy metal concentration was not different for plants planted at low and high density, suggesting that the plant density effect might not be important with regard to total uptake by plants. The quantity of leached heavy metals below ground was far in excess of that taken up by plants, indicating that an alternative measurement is required for the removal of heavy metals that have leached into ground water and deeper soil. We conclude that Alnus species are potential candidates for phytoremediation of heavy-metal- contaminated surface soil in a reclaimed dredging area.
Man-made cadmium (Cd) emissions can be transported between environmental matrices and the food chain. Food is the primary source of Cd exposure among general population as a consequence of the bioconcentration of Cd from soil. Chronic Cd exposure has been reported to be associated with chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) established the safe level of Cd intake as provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) of $25{\mu}g/kg\;bw$ in 2010. The major food groups that contribute to the most Cd exposure are rice and grains, shellfish and sea food, meat including edible offal, and vegetables. A number of studies reported the high Cd contaminated levels in foods from polluted areas in Thailand. The results are of high concern since the contaminations occur in foods that are major Cd contributors. Thus, in this review, the current situations of Cd contaminated foods in polluted areas of Thailand are summarized. In addition, the Cd intakes from selected scenarios are estimated to assess the potential health risk to consumers and the suggestions are also included.
