  • A series of water-soluble polyparacyclophanes bearing two diphenylmethane or two diphenyl ether skeletons were investigated to develop useful host compounds by using 1-anilinonaphthalene-6-sulfonate (ANS) and 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate (TNS) as fluorescent hydrophobic substrates in aqueous solution. It was noteworthy that remarkable fluorescent enhancements and blue shifts of ANS and TNS were observed only in the presence of 1,6,20,25-tetraaza[6.1.6.1] paracyclophane (CPM 44) and 1,6,21,27-tetraaza [7.1.7.1] paracyclophane (CPM 55) for diphenylmethane skeleton, and 1,7,21,27-tetraaza-14,34-dioxa [7.1.7.1] paracyclophane (CPE 55) and 1,8,22,29-tetraaza-15,36-dioxa [8.1.8.1] paracyclophane (CPE 66) for diphenyl ether skeleton, comparing with ${\alpha}-\;and\;{\beta}-cyclodextrins$. However, their acyclic analogues such as 4,4'-dimethylaminodiphenylmethane and 4,4'-dimethylaminodiphenyl ether, and paracyclophanes whose cavities were smaller showed only small effects under the same conditions. These facts suggested that hosts and substrates were in an intimate contact which would not occur without larger structures, and thus that guest molecules were strongly incorporated in the hydrophobic cavities of these larger paracyclophanes. The effects of pH on the fluorescent intensity of ANS-CPM 44, ANS-CPM 55, ANS-CPE 55, ANS-CPE 66, TNS-CPM 44, TNS-CPM 55, TNS-CPE 55 and TNS-CPE 66 systems were not significant below pH 2.0, but their fluorescent intensities were markedly reduced with increasing ionic strength.

  • In livestock industry, damage caused by the epidemic diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Highly-Pathogenic-Avian-Influenza (HPAI) and Porcine-Reproductive-and-Respiratory-Syndrome (PRRS) was very serious. The financial loss incurred from FMD alone which occurred on Nov. 2011 in Korea was estimated at 3 billion won, 23 % of annual livestock industry production. The livestock industry in Korea has greater risk of disease infection because of high density production, etc. Investigating the spread of livestock diseases should consider both direct and indirect contact as well as other various factors including airborne. Airborne infection of livestock disease was first hypothesised in the early 1900s, however, field experimental studies are still limited. Furthermore, no protocol is available in detecting airborne viruses in the field. In this study, effective virus samplers were investigated by comparative analysis of the type of samplers used detect to airborne virus. Laboratory experiments were conducted to compare virus samplers such as Bio-sampler, Dust-sampler, Compact-Cascade-Impactor (CCI) and Microflow in detecting PRRSV. Samples were analyzed by Reverse-Transcription PCR to assess the efficiency of the instrument in detecting the airborne virus. First, samples were classified into five levels according to light intensity of gel images and then the classified results were normalized. In every case, Bio-sampler and Dust-sampler were comparable with each other and have shown to be more effective than CCI and Microflow samplers.

  • In most African urban areas, Particulate Matters (PM) concentration exceeds by far the WHO limits. In these areas, plants can play a key role in removing particles. In this study, we evaluated three ornamental species (Jatropha interrigima, Ficus benjamina, Barleria prionitis) used in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Leaf-encapsulated saturation isothermal remnant magnetisation (SIRM) were measured and the relationship between PM captured and leaf wettability were done. The sampling were performed at roadsides and Parks. Firstly, Leaf-encapsulated and total leaf SIRM were quantified and the wettability was determined by drop contact angles (DCA). Secondly, the relationship between leaf SIRM and wettability was found. Results showed that leaf SIRM was two to ten times higher at roadsides than in Parks. Total leaf SIRM was also higher on mature leaves in Main roads suggesting a particle accumulation in leaves over time especially in waxy species (Ficus benjamina). This species encapsulated other than 20% of total leaf SIRM. All tested species were highly-wettable ($40^{\circ}$ < DCA < $90^{\circ}$). Thus, Jatropha interrigima with its leaf trichomes and F. benjamina with its leaf waxes were more wettable. A significantly positive correlation was found between wettability intensity and leaf SIRM.

  • The objective of this study was to examine the effect of oxidation inhibitor contents on the work of adhesion, fracture toughness, and impact strength of the unidirectional carbon-carbon composites (C/C composites). The molybdenum disilicide ($MoSi_2$) used as an oxidation inhibitor was impregnated with phenolic resins to improve the anti-oxidation properties of the composites in different concentrations of 4, 12 and 20 wt%. Based on Wilhelmy equation, the work of adhesion of C/C composites was calculated by contact angle methods. Fracture toughness and impact strength were pressured by three-point bending test for the critical intensity factor ($K_IC$) and Izod test method, respectively. As a result, the composites made with $MoSi_2$ resulted in an increasing of both fracture toughness and impact strength. Especially, the composites made with 12 wt% $MoSi_2$ content showed the highest value of London dispersive component, $W_A\;^L$, in work of adhesion, resulting from improving the interfacial adhesion force among fibers, filler, and matrix in this system.

  • A direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) was applied to treat strong nitrogenous wastewater of anaerobic digestion supernatant (ADS) and human urine (HU). The ammonia transfer was evaluated in terms of specific ammonia transfer (SAT) value, which is the ratio of total ammoniacal nitrogen divided by the amount of water transferred. The acidification resulted in low SAT values and high quality of produced water. The ammonia transfer control in the acidic condition was stronger for HU than ADS due to higher alkalinity (pH 8.8) and ammonia concentration (5700 mg-N/L) of HU. Acidified HU at pH 4 exhibited a SAT value of 1.64 × 10-5, which was significantly smaller than the SAT value of 3.00 × 10-3 for the original HU. The low pH enhanced the water flux for ADS, but HU showed a steep decrease in water flux due to enhanced fouling. It was considered that the fouling intensity in acidic conditions depends on the characteristics of the wastewater source. The major foulants on the MD membrane were NaCl, CaCO3 and CuSO4 as recognized by the SEM-EDS. Acidified ADS and HU at pH 4 showed relatively high N content of 8.18 % and 28.03 %, respectively, as organic fouling.

  • Effects of an anionic surfactant pentadecafluorooctanoic acid on the photoluminescence of porous silicon was investigated, which was prepared by photoelectrochemical etching at 4V of single crystalline n-type silicon (100) with the specific resistivity of $0.4\~0.8{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$. Photoluminescence shifted to shorter wavelength and its intensity decreased when the concentration of the surfactant increased. FT-IR and contact angle data supported the presence of the surfactant lying on the surface of porous silicon.

  • In this work, the effect of anodic oxidation on surface characteristics of high strength PAN-based carbon fibers was investigated in mechanical interfacial properties of composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid-base values, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angles. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). As a result, the acidity or the $O_{ls}/C_{ls}$ ratio of carbon fiber surfaces was increased, due to the development of the oxygen functional groups. Consequently, the anodic oxidation led to an increase in surface free energy of the carbon fibers, mainly due to the increase of its specific (or polar) component. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites, including ILSS and $K_{IC}$, had been improved in the anodic oxidation on fibers. These results were explained that good wetting played an important role in improving the degree of adhesion at interfaces between fibers and epoxy resin matrix.

  • In this work, the effects of electrochemical oxidation of carbon fiber surfaces on mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced polarized-polypropylene matrix composites were studied with various current densities during the treatments. Surface properties of the fibers before and after treatments were observed by SEM, AFM, XPS, and contact angle measurements. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were measured in terms of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results it was found that $O_{1s}$ peaks of the fiber surfaces were strengthened after electrochemical oxidation which led to the enhancement of surface free energy of the fiber, resulting in good mechanical performance of the composites. It can be concluded that electrochemical oxidation of the carbon fiber surfaces can control the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and polarized-polypropylene in this composites system.

  • The improvement of irradiation intensity and irradiation uniformity is essential for large area and high power UVA light source application. In this study, large number of chips bonded by micro soldering technique were driven by low current, and current limiting diodes were configured to supply constant current to parallel circuits consisting of large number of series strings. The dimension of light source module circuit board was $350{\times}90mm^2$ and 16,650 numbers of 385 nm flip chip LEDs were used with a configuration of 90 parallel and 185 series strings. The space between LEDs in parallel and series strings were maintained at 1.9 mm and 1.0 mm distance, respectively. The size of the flip chip was $750{\times}750{\mu}m^2$ were used with contact pads of $260{\times}669{\mu}m^2$ size, and SAC (96.5 Sn/3.0 Ag/0.5 Cu) solder was used for flip chip bonding. The fabricated light source module with 7.5 m A supply current showed temperature rise of $66^{\circ}C$, whereas irradiation was measured to be $300mW/cm^2$. Inaddition, 0.23% variation of the constant current in each series string was demonstrated.

  • Statement of problem : There are many articles that showed that the magnetism affected the bone formation around titanium implant. It means that a proper magnetism made the osseointegration improved around the implant. So after additional research on the other effect of magnetism on bone formation in implant therapy, we can conclude its possibility of clinical application on implant treatment. Purpose: The purposes of this study were to find out the intensity of magnetic field where magnetism in the titanium implant specimen inserted into the bone could affect the bone formation, and to discover the possibility of clinical application in the areas of dental implants and bone grafts. Material and method: Ten adult male rabbits(mean BW 2Kg) were used in this study. Titanium implant specimens were surgically implanted on the mesial side of the tibia of rabbits. Neodymium magnets(Magnedisc 500, Aichi Steel Corp. Japan) were placed into the implants of experimental group except control group, just after placement of the titanium implants. At 2, 4 and 8 weeks after the surgery, the animals were sacrificed, specimens were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin for light microscopic evaluation and histomorphometric analysis. Conclusion : The results were as follows: 1. In radiographic findings, increased radiopacity downward from crestal bone was observed along the titanium implant specimen at experimental period passed by 2, 4, and 8 weeks in both control and experimental group. 2. In histoiogic findings, increased new bone formation was shown in both control and experimental group through the experiment performed for 2, 4, and 8 weeks. More new bone formation and bone remodeling were shown in experimental group. 3. In histomorphometric analysis, the bone contact ratios were 11.9% for control group and 38.5% for experimental group (p<0.05).
