  • Hot spot phenomenon is caused by non-uniform contact area between brake pad and disk frequent braking. Brake disk deformed by locally concentrated heat increases magnitude of frictional vibration. And this deformation can highly influence the judder vibration. In this experimental study, vibration and hot spot was measured in accordance with rotation of disk and pressure of master cylinder for finding the factors that causes hot spot phenomena. For comparing hot spot aspects with mode shapes of disk, mode shapes were measured by conducting modal test, and analyzed by using finite element analysis. Relation between hot spot phenomenon, and mode shape, pressure of master cylinder and rotation speed of disk respectively, was achieved by hot spot measurement and frequency analysis.

  • In many machines handling lightweight and flexible media such as magnetic tape drives, xerographic copiers and sewing machines, the media must transit an open space. It is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability. The nonlinear theory of the dynamic elastica has often been used to a nonlinear dynamic deflection model. In this paper, the governing equation is derived and simulated by the finite differential method. The parametric cubic curve is applied for defining the guide shape. The dynamic contact conditions suggested by Klarbring is used to predict the direction of the flexible media according to the initial velocity and the friction coefficient. The analysis is also compared to the conventional model, showing that after contacting a $45^{\circ}$ wall, the directions of flexible media of two models are different.

  • This paper is concerned with the measurement of low-frequency vibrations of structures using the image processing method. To measure the vibrations visually, the measurement system consists of a camera, an image grabber board, and a computer. The specific target installed on the structure is used to calculate the vibration of structure. The captured image is then converted into a pixel-based data and then analyzed numerically. The limitation of the system depends on the image capturing speed and the size of image. In this paper, we discuss the methodology for the vibration measurement using the image processing method. The method enables us to measure the displacement directly without any contact. The resolution of the vibration measurement can be refined but limited to the sub centimeter displacement.

  • The coupled vibration of a wheel-railway track system has been considered as that of a moving mass on a beam. In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to analyze the coupled vibration when a wheel travels on a railway track. The railway track supported by sleepers is considered as a beam on Winkler's foundations, and the wheel traveling on railway track at constant speed is considered as a moving mass. Hertz's contact stiffness is assumed between the wheel and railway track. Numerical results are compared with experimental ones to verify the validity of the numerical method. The numerical method in found to be efficient to analyze this system. Based on the numerical simulation, the appropriate analysis range of the beam model and the characteristics of coupled vibration are discussed.

  • This paper proposes a new type of HDD suspension integrated with shape memory alloy(SMA) actuator in order to prevent the friction between the slider and the disk. A finite element analysis is undertaken to investigate modal characteristics of the proposed self loading/unloading slider. The dynamic model is formulated and its validity is proved by comparing the predicted displacement transmissibility with the measured one. A control model is then established by integrating experimentally-obtained SMA actuator dynamics. Subsequently, a sliding mode controller is designed to achieve non-contact start/stop(Non CSS) modes, and control results are presented in time domain.

  • During the dynamic analysis of a system, the Coulomb friction law is emploved to calculate the friction force. Since the static friction coefficient is only employed during the zero relative velocity, it is impractical to employ the coefficient during the dynamic analysis. To calculate the static friction force, therefore, some friction models have been developed. In this study, the integration stability and the accuracy of the models are investigated with some numerical examples. The effect of time step size during the numerical integration is also investigated. The numerical study shows that the friction model employed for most commercial codes is not as good as the one proposed in this study.

  • This paper presents means of reducing noise in NSD using path control methods for Light Tactical Vehicles (LTV). NSD is applied to the rear axle of LTVs for enhancing mobility. NSD can improve mobility of vehicles with a high locking ratio but causes noise under certain conditions due to its mechanical structure. This noise results from contact between gears due to the differential role of NSD. The noise affects users, so users have continually requested noise reductions. Though the noise doesn't affect product performance and durability, and satisfies the National Defense's noise condition standards, users request for noise reduction is the focus of this research. Eliminating the source of sound for LTVs is realistically limited, so this research applies a path control method to reduce noise by controlling the path which transmits the noise. This study improves the structural delivery system and examines methods of reducing noise in LTV systems.

  • In this paper, heatsink design for high power converter is presented. There are many ways of designing heatsink, but air cooling is by far the most used and much more practical than any of the other methods. In this paper, the practical methods of cooling which include the method to reduce a noise and a vibration due to a fan and the method to design a gap resistance and a contact resistance due to mounting force between thyristor and heatsink is proposed. Finally, simulation and experimental results are described to verify validity of the proposed method.

  • The present study conducted a parameter effect analysis of low-frequency squeal noise using a numerical simulation. The finite element program ABAQUS was used to calculate the dynamic instability based on a complex eigenvalue analysis. A total of five parameters, including the chassis, wear, piston, material property, and contact condition, were selected to identify the factor effects on a low-frequency squeal noise between 2.5 and 3.1 kHz. The present study found the dominant level of each factor through an analysis of the means in the context of the experiment design.
