  • Friction torques, electrical contact resistances and bearing temperatures were measured on high speed angular contact ball beatings for the spindle of machine tools. The test bearings ran with oil-air lubrication at the thrust loads from 320 N to 1920 N and at the rotational speed of up to 12000 rpm. Electrical contact resistances between balls and races were measured to evaluate the formation of the lubricant film in the contact area. The test results with sufficient lubrication showed that the variations of friction torques were sensitive to the thrust loads and the rotational speeds, and that the friction torques were higher than those with insufficient lubrication. With insufficient lubrication and high thrust loads, the collapse of the lubricant film was detected even at a high rotational speed. It was concluded that these high speed beatings to run in condition of fluid lubrication should require monitoring not only the temperature increase of the bearing but also the lubricant film formation in contact areas resulting from the change in the applied load and the lubricant amount.

  • Considered is non-symmetric contact traction induced by the tilting of a contact body and/or by a far field bulk tensile load to the other body. The problem is under the regime of plane strain. General profile of the contact end is incorporated and partial slip condition is supposed. As an example contact configuration, an indentation of a punch with rounded corners onto a half plane is studied. The variation of the internal stress field due to the tilting and the bulk tension is investigated. An edge crack problem is analyzed to examine the influence of the non-symmetric traction. It is shown that the tilting of a punch does not influence the behaviour of the crack. Rather, the effect of the bulk tension on the cracking behaviour is found considerable.

  • In this study, frictionless continuous and discontinuous contact problems of a magneto-electro-elastic layer in the presence of the body force were discussed. The layer was indented by a rigid cylindrical insulating punch and supported by a rigid substrate without bond. Applying the Fourier integral transform technique, the general expressions of the problem were derived in the presence of body force. Thanks to the boundary conditions, the singular integral equations were obtained for both the continuous and the discontinuous contact cases. Gauss-Chebyshev integration formulas were used to transform the singular integral equations into a set of nonlinear equations. Contact width under the punch, initial separation distance, critical load, separation regions and contact stress under the punch and between the layer, and substrate were given as a result.

  • This paper presents the second part of the modeling for the strap combined footings, this part shows a mathematical model for design of strap combined footings subject to axial load and moments in two directions to each column considering the soil real pressure acting on the contact surface of the footing for one and/or two property lines of sides opposite restricted, the pressure is presented in terms of an axial load, moment around the axis "X" and moment around the axis "Y" to each column, and the methodology is developed using the principle that the derived of the moment is the shear force. The first part shows the optimal contact surface for the strap combined footings to obtain the most economical dimensioning on the soil (optimal area). The classic model considers an axial load and a moment around the axis "X" (transverse axis) applied to each column, i.e., the resultant force from the applied loads is located on the axis "Y" (longitudinal axis), and its position must match with the geometric center of the footing, and when the axial load and moments in two directions are presented, the maximum pressure and uniform applied throughout the contact surface of the footing is considered the same. A numerical example is presented to obtain the design of strap combined footings subject to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column. The mathematical approach suggested in this paper produces results that have a tangible accuracy for all problems and it can also be used for rectangular and T-shaped combined footings.

  • The rolling wear behavior of SM55C is investigated under lubrication. This is a comparative tribological behavior of heat treatment effect for SM55C. Rolling wear test method is used for Ball-on-disk type. Specimens can be classified into two main groups: as-annealing and non-annealing. As result of wear behavior, flanking initial time of non-annealing specimen keep at retard but it have not under high normal load. One of the notable features of annealing specimen is steady flanking initial time for a normal load in this experiment. Failure mechanism of SM55C is due to the fatigue wear such like flanking, pitting etc.. Flanking leads to abruptly fracture of worn surface. Fracture mechanism has a connection with normal load and polishing direction of specimens.

  • A ballscrew-linear motion(LM) guide is well-described by its name: it is a LM guide that runs by ballscrew. It consists of LM rail, LM block, end plate, screw, nut and bearing balls. The ballscrew-LM guide has many advantages compared with conventional LM guide. The high efficiency achieved with rolling contact devices permits the employment of antibacklash methods. The balls provide the only physical contact between nut rail and block and ball screw and nut replacing the sliding friction with a rolling motion. The life of the ballscrew-LM is determinated by the balls. The objective of this paper is to introduce the design of the ballscrew-LM with the safety working load.

  • This paper presents the design of reinforced concrete combined footings of trapezoidal form subjected to axial load and moments in two directions to each column using a new model to consider soil real pressure acting on the contact surface of the footing; such pressure is presented in terms of an axial load, moment around the axis "X" and moment around the axis "Y" to each column. The classical model considers an axial load and moment around the axis "X" (transverse axis) applied to each column, and when the moments in two directions are taken into account, the maximum pressure throughout the contact surface of the footing is considered the same. The main part of this research is that the proposed model considers soil real pressure and the classical model takes into account the maximum pressure, and also is considered uniform. We conclude that the proposed model is more suited to the real conditions and is more economical.

  • A study for the structural strength analysis on the doubler plate subjected biaxial in-plane compression and shear load has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of the doubler plate, non-linear elasto-plastic analysis is introduced. Gap element modeling for contact effect between the main plate and the doubler is prepared and nonlinear analysis procedures are illustrated based on MSC/N4W. In addition, some design guides are suggested through the consideration of several important effects such as corrosion of main plate, doubler width, doubler length and doubler thickness. Finally, theses result are compared with a developed design formula based on the buckling strength and general trends. The design guides, according to the variation of design parameters are discussed.
