Carbon nanotube (CNT) field effect transistors and sensors use CNT as a current channel, of which the resistance varies with the gate voltage or upon molecule adsorption. Since the performance of CNT devices depends very much on the CNT/metal contact resistance, the CNT/electrode contact must be stable and the contact resistance must be small. Depending on the geometry of CNT/electrode contact, it can be categorized into the end-contact, embedded-contact (top-contact), and side-contact (bottom-contact). Because of difficulties in the sample preparation, the end-contact CNT device is seldom practiced. The embedded-contact in which CNT is embedded inside the electrode is desirable due to its rigidness and the low contact resistance. Fabrication of this structure is complicated, however, because each CNT has to be located under a high-resolution microscope and then the electrode is patterned by electron beam lithography. The side-contact is done by depositing CNT electrophoretically or by precipitating on the patterned electrode. Although this contact is fragile and the contact resistance is relatively high, the side-contact by far has been widely practiced because of its simple fabrication process. Here we introduce a simple method to embed CNT inside the electrode while taking advantage of the bottom-contact process. The idea is to utilize a eutectic material as an electrode, which melts at low temperature so that CNT is not damaged while annealing to melt the electrode to embed CNT. The lowering of CNT/Au contact resistance upon annealing at mild temperature has been reported, but the electrode in these studies did not melt and CNT laid on the surface of electrode even after annealing. In our experiment, we used a eutectic Au/Al film that melts at 250$^{\circ}C$. After depositing CNT on the electrode made of an Au/Al thin film, we annealed the sample at 250$^{\circ}C$ in air to induce eutectic melting. As a result, Au-Al alloy grains formed, under which the CNT was embedded to produce a rigid and low resistance contact. The embedded CNT contact was as strong as to tolerate the ultrasonic agitation for 90 s and the current-voltage measurement indicated that the contact resistance was lowered by a factor of 4. By performing standard fabrication process on this CNT-deposited substrate to add another pair of electrodes bridged by CNT in perpendicular direction, we could fabricate a CNT cross junction. Finally, we could conclude that the eutectic alloy electrode is valid for CNT sensors by examine the detection of Au ion which is spontaneously reduced to CNT surface. The device sustatined strong washing process and maintained its detection ability.

A finite element code is developed for 3-D self-contact problems, using continuum elements with a SRI(Selective Reduced Integration) scheme to prevent locking phenomenon by the incompressibility of rubber. Contact treatment is carried out in two ways : using the displacement constraints in case of rigid contact ; and imposing the same contact forces on two contact boundaries in case of self-contact. The finite element code developed is applied to the deformation analysis of C.V.joint boots which maintain lubrication conditions and protect the C.V.joint assembly from impact and dust. The boot accompanies large rotation depending on the rotation of the wheel axis and leading to the self-contact phenomena of the boot bellows. Since this contact phenomenon causes wear of the product and has great influence on the endurance life of the product, it is indispensable to carry out stress analysis of the rubber boots. In case of self-contact, various methods for determining contact forces have been suggested with an appropriate contact formulation. Especially, the types of penetration in self-contact are modularized to accelerate conputation with a contact algorithm.
In this study, we aim to analyze the effects of both contact layer properties and surface roughness on contact resistance. The contact has a great influence on performance in terms of electrical conduction and heat transfer. The two biggest factors determining contact resistance are the presence of surface roughness and the surface layer. For this reason we calculated the contact resistance by considering both factors simultaneously. The model of this study to calculate contact resistance is as follows. First, the three representative surface parameters for the GW model are obtained by Nayak's random process. Then, the apparent contact area, real contact area, and contact number of asperities are calculated using the GW model with the surface parameters. The contact resistance of a single surface layer is calculated using Mikic's constriction equation. The total contact resistance is approximated by the parallel connection between the same asperity contact resistances. The results of this study are as follows. The appropriate thickness with reduction effect for contact resistance is determined according to the difference in conductivity between the base layer and surface layer. It was confirmed that the standard deviation of surface roughness has the greatest influence on surface roughness parameters. The results of this study will be useful for selecting the surface material and surface roughness when the design considering the contact resistance is needed.
The variation of contact traction induced by different contact shapes is studied experimentally and theoretically. Considerations fer the contact shape are rounded, truncated and truncated with rounding punches. A fretting wear experiment is conducted with the contact configuration of the strip on the tube specimens. The strip specimen is pressed to form the end profile of a rounded and truncated with rounding punches shape. Wear on the tube is investigated, which is regarded as the slip region of the contact surface. Taken into consideration is the general solution of the normal traction in the case of the indentation by a punch with its end profile of the combination of parabolas. Then, partial slip solution is obtained numerically, which is compared with the wear on the tube. The radius of the rounding and the obliquity of the edge truncation affect the tractions considerably. It is found that the proper choice of the end profile can restrain the contact-induced failure such aswear.
This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.

It is necessary to analyze the contact phenomena in order to effectively design the machine components with contact surfaces. In general, the contact action is highly nonlinear and irreversible because we cannot predict the contact regions and conditions. Recently, the finite element method is used to analyze the contact problem. In this paper, the contact element method is applied to avoid the mesh refinement and iterative calculation of general contact algorithms. By use of it, the deformation and stress concentration of turbo compressor rotor are computed. It shown that the contact element is convenient analysis and the results are relatively accurate.

Contact resistance and contact leakage current of the Al/TiSiS12T/Si system are investigated for NS0+T and PS0+T junctions. SALICIDE (Self Aligned Silicide) process was used to make the Al/TiSiS12T/Si system. Titanium disilicide is one of the most common silicides because of its thermal stability, ability to form selective formation and low resistivity. In this paper, RTA temperature effect and Junction implant dose effect were evaluated to characterize contact resistance and contact leakage current. The TiSiS12T contact resistance to NS0+T silicon is lower than that to PS0+T silicon, and TiSiS12T of contact leakage current to NS0+T silicon is lower than that to PS0+T silicon. Contact resistance and contact leakage current of the Al/TiSiS12T/Si system by this method were possible for VLSI application.

The flying height of contact slider is determined by vertical and pitching motions of slider. This paper performed the computer simulation for flying height change of contact slider. It is changed by many parameters, contact stiffness, contact damping, air bearing stiffness ratio, a location of mass center, and so on. Computer simulation is performed for knowing for what change of these parameters influences in flying height of contact slider. Disk surface is modeled in harmonic wave with from 10㎑ to 600㎑. Tri-pad slider is modeled in that contact slider has 2-DOF motion (vertical motion, pitching motion). Tri-pad contact slider is analyzed by numerical analysis method in computer simulation.
In this report, the contact resistance between "electrode" and "lead" is investigated for reasonable measurements of samples' resistance in a polypyrrole (PPy) nanowire device. The sample's resistance, including "electrode-lead" contact resistance, shows a decrease as force applied to the interface increases. Moreover, the sample's resistance becomes reasonably similar to, or lower than, values calculated by resistivity of PPy reported in previous studies. The decrease of electrode-lead contact resistance by increasing the applying force was analyzed by using Holm theory: the general equation of relation between contact resistance ($R_H$) of two-metal thin films and contact force ($R_H{\propto}1/\sqrt{F}$). The present investigation can guide a reliable way to minimize electrode-lead contact resistance for reasonable characterization of nanomaterials in a microelectrode device; 80% of the maximum applying force to the junction without deformation of the apparatus shows reasonable values without experimental error.
This paper addresses technical problems of thermal contact conductance or resistance which inevitably occurs in most cryogenic engineering systems. The main focus of this paper is to examine what kind of physical factors primarily influences the thermal contact resistance and to suggest how it can be minimized. It is a good practical rule that the contact surface must have sub-micron roughness level with no oxide layer and be thinly covered by indium, gold, or Apiezon-N grease for securing sufficient direct contact area. The higher contact pressure, the lower the thermal contact resistance. The general description of this technique has been widely perceived and reasonable engineering results have been achieved in most applications. However, the detailed view of employing these techniques and their relative efficacies to reduce thermal contact resistances need to be thoroughly reviewed. We should consider specific thermal contact conditions, examine the engineering requirements, and execute each method with precautions to fulfil their maximum potentials.
