  • The construction industry has been leading the growth of the nation's economy not only by providing with various infrastructure projects but also by positively impaction related industries such as crating numerous job opportunities. Relevant statistics show the production amount of construction taking about 17.5% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). In spite of its positive impacts on the economy, image of Korea construction industry is generally reflected as negative mainly because of its environmental disruption, low payment, bribe, fraudulent work and inefficiency. It brings students to be reluctant choosing the construction industry as their carrier path and governmental and principal research status. Therefore it has been difficult to recruit highly qualitied human resources to the industry while the morale of the whole industry has gradually become demoralized. To improve this stand, many domestic researchers carried out research projects for improving the image of Korea Construction Industry. This study also sympathizes with necessity of improving the negative image of construction industry to remain as one of the leading industry in the 21st century. • The future competitiveness of construction industry is dependent on K-12 students. However, unfavorable images of construction industry have negative influence on K-12 students' decision-making of their career. This negative image makes them not want to find out what actually happens in construction industry. Consequently, it is important to give K-12 students the opportunity to know what construction employees actually do in their job. Studies show that K-12 students who encounter the job early-on are more likely to choose it as their career. In this context, this paper proposes construction educational game in which it can serve as a medium for capturing K-12 students' interest in Construction Management (CM). Based on the literature reviews, challenges of construction educational game for K-12 students which are edutainment, hands-on experience and social interaction, are derived. To address these issues, conceptual model and scenario are designed. Based on designed scenario, prototype of Simulation based Construction Game in Virtual World (SCGVW) is developed in Second Life (SL) and applicability test to K-12 students are implemented. This paper concludes with a discussion of the lessons learned and the future development steps of the construction educational game for K-12 students.

  • As information and communication technology advances driving the rapid evolution of e-commerce and e-business becomes on effective marketing means for both business and institutions, the industry deals with these changes and has a profound, positive impact on production and operations management. But the construction industry falls behind compared with other industries in productivity, informationalization, automatization and globalization. Especially even though the informationalization is inevitable in any developing society, a number of construction industries can hardly cope with it properly. As the construction industry gets informationalized and advanced, the introduction of PMIS (Project Management Information System) is making progress actively for the effective construction project control and productivity improvement in construction. With the government officials' political promotion and the rising desire for construction informationalization of enterprises, many are attempting to develop integrated systems or to replace a previous system with a more advanced alternative. Construction Industry, however, has the peculiar properties that the period for the completion of construction is limited and on top of that, most of its data processing systems are seen as being an early stage in the design of management information systems. As a result, there are extremely few applications in the construction industry. In this paper, we propose the PMIS system based on new model 4CM that improves on previous models.

  • Machine Learning is a process of using computer algorithms to extract information from raw data to solve complex problems in a data-rich environment. It has been used in the construction industry by both academics and practitioners for multiple applications to improve the construction process. The Construction Industry Institute, a leading construction research organization has twenty-five years of experience in benchmarking capital projects in the industry. The organization is at an advantage to develop useful machine learning applications because it possesses enormous real construction data. Its benchmarking programs have been actively used by owner and contractor companies today to assess their capital projects' performance. A credible benchmarking program requires statistically valid data without subjective interference in the program administration. In developing the next-generation benchmarking program, the Data Warehouse, the organization aims to use machine learning algorithms to minimize human effort and to enable rapid data ingestion from diverse sources with data validity and reliability. This research effort uses a focus group comprised of practitioners from the construction industry and data scientists from a variety of disciplines. The group collaborated to identify the machine learning requirements and potential applications in the program. Technical and domain experts worked to select appropriate algorithms to support the business objectives. This paper presents initial steps in a chain of what is expected to be numerous learning algorithms to support high-performance computing, a fully automated performance benchmarking system.

  • Although the design-build (DB) delivery system has been taking great strides in the world and relevant researches have also been quite abundant, few studies have dealt with its potential impacts on the construction industry as a whole. This research first identified the potential entry barrier factors, which may hinder the market access, based on the theory of industrial economics and characteristics of DB project. Then through a nation-wide questionnaire survey involving 103 construction contractors and engineering consultants, the influences of each factor on company's competitiveness and corporate strategies were scrutinized, and consequently, the evolution of the construction industry was examined. It is found that as opposed to the traditional design-bid-build delivery system, the DB delivery system elevates competitive advantages of large organizations in terms of the financial capability, working experience, human resource, and administrative strength, and among them, the financial strength was concluded to be the most significant force in differentiating corporate strategies and widening the gap of competitiveness between companies. It is inferred if the government extensively adopts DB delivery system, large organizations that already possess the competitive advantage tend to obtain both design and construction abilities, and dominate the DB market. Small and medium sized companies will find little room to maneuver and be forced to become specialty sub-contractors.

  • In an attempt to disseminate modernized Korean traditional housing (Hanok), a ten-year research project was initiated in 2010 by the Korean Government to reduce the construction cost, improve the facility performance, and automate the Hanok construction industry. To meet these objectives, various research areas, including public policies, planning methods, design standards, new building materials, construction standards, maintenance procedures, advanced project management tools, and integrated IT applications have been developed. In addition, comprehensive technologies developed were applied to the ten pilot Hanok buildings to validate the real-world performance as part of the research project. To further facilitate the digital transformation of the Hanok industry by using the research results, it is required to disseminate the developed technologies in an automated and standardized manner. In particular, it is crucial to systematize and manage the interoperability of various technical data and accumulated historical data for different business functions, especially within the highly fragmented industry. In this context, this paper proposes an ontology-based Hanok information dissemination platform to enable industry-wide automated knowledge and information sharing. The system architecture, standardized historical database, and advanced analytics based on ontology web language (OWL) for the Hanok industrialization platform are introduced.
