As the Concept "how environmental friendly" becomes more and more important in road construction. However, so far there is no estimation method. Environmental friendly concept can be incorporated at the plan level in order to influence decision making, and support policies that affect environment. The overall goal of this study was to develop environmental friendly concept measures for the national highway and to develop a methodology to implement a more environmental friendly concept. The research identified 8 performance measures through a project analysis that could address environmental impact assessment system's ten strategic goals - Topography, Wildlife, hydrology, landuse, air quality, water quality, soil, waste, noise, landscape. The qualitatively and quantitatively evaluation approach was selected as the decision support framework and performance measure were investigated using the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) and pilot corridor for a 10 section and calculate the index values. The methodology was applied to a pilot corridor comprised of a 120km section of national highway in korea. The methodology made it possible to identify the specific performance measures that need improvement to enhance the overall environmental friendly concept. It is fairly intuitive, based on readily available data, and is easy to apply. It provides a powerful tool for government to assess the relative environmental friendly conceptof their transportation corridors now and in the future. It allows for comparisons within a corridor and with other corridors and identifies the improvements needed to enhance the environmental friendly concept.

Today the harbor oscillation problems are the most significant factor to design harbors serving the very large ships. Large vessels moored in the elastic hawsers at the coastal harbors are often displaced due to the resonance between the long period waves and mooring system. The cargo handling may be interrupted and the hawsers may be broken, especially when the amplification becomes remarkable. The most significant harbor which is confronted with harbor oscillation problem in Korea is the Pohang New Port. Many cases of problems are being notified by the pilot association and local office of MOMAF. However, it is difficult to prevent the arrival of long waves causing oscillation within this harbor. Moreover, Government already started new port plan at the mouth of YoungIl Bay without treating problems occurred in the Pohang New Port. This study deals with the variation of harbor oscillation due to the construction of 4.1km breakwater at the bay mouth and new port plan. Numerical method used are fairly standard form from the extended mild slope equation. The obtained numerical results were compared with the field measurement from the previous study and this will bring a certain level of discussion and consideration of variation in the future port development.
There have been a number of water and sewer pipe breakdown reports followed by ground subsidence. Also, the excavating works for construction due to overcrowding of city have been common. Particularly, in urban areas ground becomes unstable because of the lowered lifeline sinkage followed excavation and backfilling. In order to solve the problem, some reinforcement works for ground by rod tamping or grouting have been applied. However, it is hard to predict when the buried utilities in underground will be damaged. Also, there is a limit for the underground exploration and investigation methods. Therefore, in this study, the estimated about the water soluble polymer pouch including poor mixed admixture which is designed to eliminate the dangerous factors. The reinforcement strength of this method was confirmed by verifying three points: meltiness in a certain period, water solubility in the ground water level, and characteristics of the pouch, which can be stored in daily conditions. It is also proved that this method allows to keep the ground from getting weakened in the installation of water and sewer pipe along with back filling materials.
In recent times, sea level increasing caused by abnormal weather and global warming, sea-sand dredging and complex development causes various kind of erosion damages onto the coastal area in the world. The various types of erosion control and protection methods are applied but there are no signs of fruitful effectiveness. The PC concrete protection block for shore protection structure is practically installed in globally but most of structures in the present day became villainous because of bad accessability. In this study, hydrophilic revetments for control and protection of coastline erosion will be developed in order to make up for a faculty of the shore erosion protection block with better accessibility and excellent protection ability. Experimental measurements were researched to insure for the capacity and facility on reflection coefficient, overtopping volume, and overtopping height characteristics of newly developed shore erosion protection block in model tests. As the result, hydraulic model tests show much excellent than the general step block. Field tests were carried out also to verify through vegetative test on an affinity and construction work test of control-protection on coastline erosion with actual utilization. In the latter case, deposition of sand accumulation occurred in fairly short time at the established reaches and then we can be confirmed to utilize for newly developed block as the revetments for control and protection of coastline erosion.
Congestion on expressways is increasing in spite of continuous road construction. In enlargement of expressway capacity to lessen congestion, a long period is needed and in the case of traffic congestion, it would be impossible to avoid long periods of traffic congestion. So, it is necessary to cope with traffic congestion through continuous traffic condition monitoring, analysis of the causes of congestion and the development of alternatives before traffic conditions worsen. A congestion index that can express traffic operating conditions measurably is needed to monitor those conditions. Thus, in this research, a new congestion index, the Traffic Condition Index (TCI), is developed. TCI is able to evaluate roads that have different grades (or design speeds) and to judge traffic condition as good, fair and poor (congested). In addition, TCI has merits in that it can strengthen the function of existing Freeway Traffic Management Systems (FTMS) and can be applied to congestion management easily: TCI calculates congestion intensity and severity using data obtained from existing FTMS. In order to validate TCI, it was applied to the Kyungbu Expressway and the Seohaean Expressway. As a result, TCI shows a good performance in the aspect of applicability and ability of presentation of traffic conditions compared with travel speed and Travel Time Index (TTI).

An algorithm to allow shoreline movement during numerical experiment on sediment transport, deposition or resuspension for general coastal morphology is proposed here. The bed slope near shoreline, i.e. mean sea level, is influenced by bed material, tidal current, waves, and wave-induced current, but has been reported to remain within a stable range. Its annual variation is not large, either. The algorithm is adjusting the bathymetry, if the largest bed slope within shoreline band exceeds a given bed slope due to continuous erosion at zones below the shoreline. This algorithm automatically describes retreat of shoreline caused by erosion, when used within a numerical system. The algorithm was tested to a situation which includes a continuous dredging at a point, and showed satisfactory development of concentric circle contours. Next, the algorithm was tested to another situation which includes sinking of eroded part of bed plate, and produced satisfactory results, too. Finally, the algorithm was tested to a movable-bed laboratory experimental conditions. The shoreline movement behind detached breakwater was reasonably reproduced with this algorithm.

Research on micro-level assessment of the changes of socio-economic status following health interventions is very scarce. The use of household asset data to determine wealth indices is a common procedure for estimating socio-economic position in resource poor settings. In such settings information about income is usually lacking, and the collection of individual consumption or expenditure data would require in-depth interviews, posing a considerable risk of bias. In this study, we determined the socio-economic status of 213 households in a community population in an island in the north-western Tanzania before and 3 year after implementation of a participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) intervention to control schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections. We constructed a household 'wealth index' based housing construction features (e.g., type of roof, walls, and floor) and durable assets ownership (e.g., bicycle, radio, etc.). We employed principal components analysis and classified households into wealth quintiles. The study revealed that asset variables with positive factor scores were associated with higher socio-economic status, whereas asset variables with negative factor scores were associated with lower socio-economic status. Overall, households which were rated as the poorest and very poor were on the decrease, whereas those rated as poor, less poor, and the least poor were on the increase after PHAST intervention. This decrease/increase was significant. The median shifted from -0.4376677 to 0.5001073, and the mean from -0.2605787 (SD; 2.005688) to 0.2605787 (SD; 1.831199). The difference in socio-economic status of the people between the 2 phases was highly statistically significant (P<0.001). We argue that finding of this study should be treated with caution as there were other interventions to control schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections which were running concurrently on Kome Island apart from PHAST intervention.

This study was carried out as a survey on the level of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) in 5 items of agricultural products (lettuce, pumpkin, head lettuce, cabbage and crown daisy) for which safety guidelines are not yet established in Korea. The 407 samples were collected from local markets in 9 regional places and the levels of metals were measured by ICP-MS and mercury analyzer. The average levels of Pb, Cd, As and Hg were 0.026, 0.018, 0.008 and 0.003 mg/kg for lettuce, 0.002, 0.001, 0.001 and 0.0006 mg/kg for pumpkin, 0.002, 0.005, 0.001 and 0.0005 mg/kg for head lettuce, 0.001, 0.002, 0.0002 and 0.0006 mg/kg for cabbage and 0.022, 0.014, 0.006 and 0.004 mg/kg for crown daisy. For risk assessment, the daily dietary exposures of Pb, Cd and Hg by intake of these agricultural products were calculated and compared with PTWI (provisional tolerable weekly intake) established by JECFA. The daily dietary exposure of heavy metals by intake of these agricultural products were 0.13, 0.56 and 0.09% of PTWI, respectively. These monitoring results will be utilized as fundamental data for the establishment of Korean standards of Pb, Cd, As and Hg in 5 items of agricultural products and valuable source for DB construction for science-based safety control of heavy metals in foods including agricultural products.

Effects of establishments of more sewer systems on water quality in Nam River, Deokchun River, and Jinyang Lake were analyzed for various scenarios using QUAL2E, WASP 7 water quality model. Three different scenarios were tested: 1) 20.8% of sewer diffusion rate which is same to the existing condition. 2) Expansion of sewer system to 65.2% which would emit less pollutants, BOD 2350.5 kg/d, TN 216.0 kg/d, TP 44.0kg/d. 3) Pollutants emission to maintain first grade water quality in Nam River, Jinyang Lake, BOD and TN in the case 2 were 7.69%, 2.10% lower than those in the case 1 in the Nam River. And in the Jinyang Lake, BOD, TN, and TP in the case 2 were 10.25%, 1.37%, 2.94% lower than those in the case 1. However the simulations showed that water quality could not hold down first grade water quality standard level with the establishments of more sewer systems. To satisfy the criteria in the Nam River and Jinyang Lake, BOD emission must be reduced 27.2%, 37.05% compared to those in the case 1.
With the advent of the time when the competitiveness of a nation or a city can be evaluated by the extent of cultural reception, the art exhibitions, like other genres of art, are actively held in various ways by different institutions. In accordance with actual tendency, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has planned to increase the number of museums and galleries up to 500 by the year of 2011. Under these circumstances, the actual situation shows that the central and local governments are adopting beneficial measures to support the private galleries such as permission of construction on green belt areas and tax deduction. That is, our society has come to realize that the necessity and importance of public as well as private galleries to play their roles as cultural and educational institution. Now, the number of galleries is growing. Exhibitions are held everywhere. Therefore, spectators have more chance to visit them than before. With these conditions and the growing number of amateurs, social interest in curator organizing exhibitions is getting popular. Because of the rise of curatorial popularity on the social level, the influence of curators which is exercised within the gallery seems to become gradually enlarged. In reality, it is true that the curatorial influence cannot be ignored more than ever for appear in various fields their new features made from their professional cometence. The function of gallery is more strengthened and its position is more heightened than those in 80s. For these reasons, the curators whose playground is the gallery, they may be regarded as invisible power to the artists. Futhermore, their influence as such seems to be more likely because our world of art does not still have any reliable system of art criticism. Nevertheless, considering the actual situation in which national and public galleries as cultural institution would rather exist on the local sentiments or political dynamics than on autonomy, there must be some restrictions for the galleries and the curators to obtain the power. In this context, the actual moment is looked upon as transitional period to make the curatorship settled down. Before discussing the power relevant to curatorship, we are going to examine first the role and function of curator and then the new curatorial role and function at the age of information. Finally, we will see in sequence the development and problems of curatorship, the power and dilemmas of curator.
