An innovative geometry control method for short-line match precast segmental bridges

  • The occurrence of unexpected horizontal offset in the instrument or target will result in accumulated horizontal deviation in segment alignment with traditional short-line match method. A geometry control method, the four-point method, is developed for precast segmental bridges to avoid the influences of unexpected horizontal offset. The concept of the four-point method is elucidated. Furthermore, the detailed instruments and instructions are introduced. Finally, the four-point method is validated through a practical engineering application. According to the survey data, after short-line match precast construction, the vertical deviations on both sides vary between -5 mm and 5 mm in almost all segments, and the horizontal deviations vary between -4 mm and 4 mm in all segments. Without on-site adjustment, the maximum vertical and horizontal closure gaps are 12.3 and 26.1 mm, respectively. The four-point method is suggested to alleviate the issues associated with relatively poor soil conditions in casting yard.

A Study on the Application Instance of KOSHA 18001 to Construction Firms (건설업의 KOSHA 18001 적용사례 연구 - 현장활동 수준분야 중심으로 -)

  • Through this study we have reviewed the implementation model, certificate criteria and the formation of KOSHA 18001 Safety and Health Management System and have compared and examined with OHSAS 18001 Certificate. In the course of the 1st questionnaires which have been participated by the concerned Safety and Health Staffs(such as Project Mannager, Site Supervisior, Safety Engineers) of the local construction sites, actual condition of application for KOSHA 18001 has been scrutinized and examined. And as a result, we presented the improved model by digging out the problems. The improved model has been applied for about eight months in local construction sites and the effectiveness has been carefully compared and examined before and after the application of the improvement model through the 2nd questionnaires by the relevant staffs (such as Project Manager, Site Supervisor, Safety Engineer and Project Engineers of the Coordinated Sub-Contractors).

A Study on the construction quality infra and it's core confidency priority for enhancing construction certification system (건설공사 품질인증시스템 향상을 위한 품질인프라 및 핵심역량 도출에 관한 연구)

  • This study is for figuring out major components of construction quality infrastructure and suggesting improvement plan by benchmarking global best practice model and analyzing gap between the model and sample practice. Based on improvement plan, researcher could derive major characters and components of construction quality infrastructure, and also about the priority among core competency components of construction quality experts. The result showed that the 'human resource' was ranked the best priority followed by 'method' 'environment', 'equipment' among major characters and components of construction quality infrastructure. Also, for core competency components of construction quality experts, 'number of years in work places' was the best priority, and the 'professional knowledge on engineering' was another priority ranked. Far from general perception on competency components, 'academic education' ranked the last. It may allude that the current education system in this country is not effective in developing competency of quality engineers. In summary, this study shows professionalism of quality engineer is the most important thing in all the components.

A Study on the Career Management for Construction Engineers through the Professional FGI Results: Focused on the Index of Construction Engineer's Competency (전문가 FGI를 통한 건설기술자 경력관리 방안 연구: 건설기술자 역량지수를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to analyze the current career management system for construction engineers and propose the developed future plan for the career management system. Especially, this study explores the Index of Construction Engineer's Competency(ICEC) and issues for workplace competency development which is the foundation of the career management system for construction engineers and proposes the advanced strategies for operating the career management system. For the developing the future strategy of the current construction engineer's career management system, a focus group interview was conducted in this study. Total 12 experts participated in the FGI. The study results identify the six key issues for advanced construction engineers' career management system. Those six issues include 1)preparing in the inducement of new human resources, 2)institutional modification of the current job/expertise fields, 3)attaching importance of practical experience in the workplace, 4)consideration of various factors of individual career, and 5)developing the highest level's workplace competency. Based on these research findings, theoretical and practical implication and suggestion for future studies were provided.

Improvement Plan of the Requirements for Professional Engineer Certification (기술사 자격취득요건 개선 방안)

  • Compared with the Certification Requirements for Professional Engineer in other country, those of Korean are not satisfactory. This is due to a few facts such as no relation with accreditation of engineering education and no separation of technical field and engineering field. Eventually, this problem makes it impossible to ensure the international mobility of Korean professional engineers. This research reviews the international trends regarding the professional engineer certification requirements, compares the requirements of Korea and other countries, proposes three alternatives for improvement, and suggests two implementation plans for the alternatives.
